This study investigates the relationship between the histological findings of excised appendices and intra-operative observations during open appendectomy, focusing on cases of uncomplicated appendicitis.
Results show that the presence and condition of the greater omentum and peritoneal exudates can predict the histological state of the appendix, with high positive predictive values indicating a reliable connection between visible inflammation and acute appendicitis.
The findings suggest that the macroscopic assessment of the appendix during surgery can significantly inform the need for further exploration or intervention.
