Background And Objectives: Prospective data on presentation and outcomes of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Nigeria are limited; however, emergency presentation with advanced disease is thought common.

Methods: Consecutive CRC patients presenting at six sites over 6 years were included. Risk factors for emergency presentation were evaluated using logistic regression methods.

Article Synopsis
  • In Nigeria, gastric cancer ranks as the 10th most common and 9th most deadly cancer, but there is limited data available to fully understand it.
  • A study evaluated 138 patients diagnosed with gastric cancer over 15 years, finding that most patients presented with significant weight loss and anorexia, and many had advanced disease.
  • Most patients received some form of treatment, with nearly half undergoing both chemotherapy and surgery, though over 50% were deceased by the time of follow-up, highlighting the need for improved data quality and timely interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • A 26-year-old woman experienced obstructive jaundice and significant abdominal swelling due to a large choledochal cyst.
  • Investigations showed that the cyst caused a blockage, leading to high bilirubin levels in her blood.
  • After surgery to remove the cyst and reroute her bile duct, she has been doing well in her follow-ups over the past 6 months.

Background: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with a high case fatality rate in resource-limited settings. The independent predictors of poor outcome after ICH in sub-Saharan Africa remains to be characterized in large epidemiological studies. We aimed to determine factors associated with 30-day fatality among West African patients with ICH.

Aim Of The Study: The aim of this study was to investigate lower extremity peripheral artery disease (LEPAD) in the foot arteries of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, with and without clinical symptoms of arterial insufficiency, using triplex Doppler ultrasound.

Materials And Methods: Forty-seven consecutive adult subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 47 age-matched and sex-matched non-diabetic controls were recruited (94 limbs each). Ankle-brachial index (ABI), fasting blood glucose assay, glycated haemoglobin assay and triplex sonography of the dorsalis pedis artery (DPA) and the distal posterior tibial artery (PTA) in both feet were performed.

Background: The relationship of diet with stroke risk among Africans is not well understood.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary patterns and stroke risk among West Africans.

Methods: In this multi-center case-control study, 3684 stroke patients matched (for age and sex) with 3684 healthy controls were recruited from Nigeria and Ghana.

Background: Mammography, the most preferred tool for breast cancer screening, has very poor uptake in Nigeria, even among health workers. No nationwide study has been done to ascertain this. This study sought to determine the current perceptions and practices of Nigerian female health care practitioners on mammography screening across different types and levels of health care institutions in the country's 6 geopolitical zones.

Background: The purposes of this study are to sonographically measure the placental thickness (PT) in normal fetuses; to correlate it with gestational age (GA), fetal growth parameters, and estimated fetal weight (EFW); and to design a nomogram for the derived PT measurements.

Methods: This was a hospital-based cross-sectional study on 400 women with apparently normal pregnancy within the age range of 18-45 years recruited from the Antenatal Clinic of our hospital. The fetal GA was estimated by the last menstrual period (LMP).

Purpose: Post-stroke arthritic changes that may compromise rehabilitation have been described in the upper and lower limbs. We aimed at evaluating the soft tissue arthritic changes associated with pain in hemiplegic knees of stroke patients in our environment.

Material And Methods: Hemiplegic and non-hemiplegic knees of 48 stroke patients as well as both knees of 26 apparently healthy controls were evaluated with a 7.

Background: Endothelial dysfunction (ED), as ascertained by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD), is a known feature of sickle cell disease (SCD), which is present both in crisis and in steady state. The assessment of FMD was introduced to examine the vasodilator function. Our objective was to establish the relationship between ED determined by FMD, biomarkers of renal dysfunction, and biomarkers of disease severity in SCD subjects asymptomatic of renal disease.

Article Synopsis
  • - Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes, often affecting the median nerve due to nerve damage from high blood sugar and reduced blood flow to nerve-supplying vessels; this study focuses on Nigerian adults.
  • - The study measured the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve in diabetic patients using ultrasonography and found it to be significantly thicker in diabetics compared to healthy controls, especially at the carpal tunnel region.
  • - Although the thickening is associated with the presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), the severity of DPN did not affect the median nerve CSA, and no link was found between nerve size and the duration of diabetes or blood sugar control.

Objective: This study was done to investigate the effect(s) of glaucoma on the ocular optic nerve sheath diameter and lens thickness using B-mode ultrasonography.

Materials And Methods: One hundred and twenty study participants were recruited; 60 subjects with glaucoma and 60 age- and sex-matched controls without glaucoma. The optic nerve sheath diameter and lens thickness of both eyes were measured using a linear high frequency transducer with frequency of 6.

Objective: To determine the strength of association between fetal kidney measurements and gestational age (GA) in third-trimester pregnancies.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, women in the third trimester of a singleton pregnancy who were sure of the date of their last menstrual period or had an early pregnancy scan were recruited consecutively in 2012. Standard biometric measurements were taken, along with fetal kidney length (FKL), anteroposterior diameter (FKAPD), and transverse diameter (FKTD).

Objective: To determine the cost burden of Neuroimaging and its contribution to direct total hospitalization costs (HCs) during one-time admission for first-ever stroke.

Methods: The clinical characteristics, direct itemised costs and total HCs for 170 consecutive patients with first-ever stroke, admitted at our public tertiary health facility over a 15-month period were evaluated.

Results: The records of 170 stroke subjects were reviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study analyzed clinical presentations, with most patients experiencing symptoms like melaena stool, haematemesis, and dizziness, and it highlighted the effectiveness of endoscopic treatments, achieving a 90.5% success rate without rebleeding for ulcers.
  • * Results showed a substantial proportion of patients at medium or high risk (92.7%) based on the Rockall scoring system, correlating higher scores with increased hospital stays and mortality, which was recorded at 5.9%.
