Cooking fuels are sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are persistent in the environment and have detrimental effects on human health. Fifteen PCBs congeners from the smoke of eight (8) commonly used cooking fuels in Nigeria were investigated in this study. The growing demand for ferrous metals and abundant scrap materials has fueled Nigeria's scrap-iron smelting industry, leading to hazardous pollutant emissions. This study investigated the concentrations, seasonal and indoor-outdoor variations, origins, and health impacts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in dust samples around a scrap-iron smelting facility. Analyses of dust samples revealed that high molecular weight PAHs (HMWPAHs) dominated during both seasons, with 5-ring PAHs (34%) contributing most during the rainy season and 3-ring PAHs (36%) during the dry season.

This paper documents the results of an intervention conducted in Nigeria to test the effectiveness of a mobile phone technology, , in enabling women to self-report gender-based violence (GBV). Women experiencing GBV and other challenges related to sexual and reproductive health and rights were requested to use their mobile phones to text a code to a central server. In turn, the server relayed the messages to trained nearby health providers and civil society organization (CSO) officials who reached out to provide health care and social management services to the callers.

This study comprehensively explores the compaction and compressibility characteristics of snail shell ash (SSA) and ground-granulated blast-furnace slag (GBFS) in stabilizing local bentonite for landfill baseliner applications. The untreated soil, with a liquid limit of 65%, plastic limit of 35%, and plasticity index of 30%, exhibited optimal compaction at a moisture content of 32% and a maximum dry density of 1423 kg/m. Objective: The objective of this paper is to describe the design, implementation, and outcomes of a mobile phone technology aimed at rapidly reaching rural Nigerian women who experience pregnancy complications with emergency transportation and access to providers.

Method: The project was implemented in 20 communities in two predominantly rural Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Edo State, in southern Nigeria, as part of a larger implementation project aimed at improving the access of rural women to skilled pregnancy care.

Nucleic acids are used in many therapeutic modalities, including gene therapy, but their ability to trigger host immune responses in vivo can lead to decreased safety and efficacy. In the case of adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors, studies have shown that the genome of the vector activates Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9), a pattern recognition receptor that senses foreign DNA. Here, we engineered AAV vectors to be intrinsically less immunogenic by incorporating short DNA oligonucleotides that antagonize TLR9 activation directly into the vector genome.
