Employment of people with Down syndrome: A scoping review.

Down syndrome is the most prevalent genetic condition contributing to intellectual disability. Advancements in medical care have significantly increased the life expectancy of people with this condition, making employment a vital component for independent living and quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the current literature on the employability and employment experiences of individuals with Down syndrome, focusing on the evolution of the employment rate and factors influencing employment such as cognitive and personal factors, societal attitudes, challenges, and effective support systems.

Beyond the Tropics: Unraveling the Complex Relationship between Sun Exposure, Dietary Intake, and Vitamin D Deficiency in Coastal Malaysians.

Despite Malaysia's year-round sunny climate, vitamin D deficiency is surprisingly common among Malaysians. However, we hypothesise that vitamin D levels among coastal populations are above average. Thus, we aim to investigate vitamin D levels and correlate them with the potential contributing factors from three selected coastal villages in Johor, Melaka, and Negeri Sembilan.

Moving from long case to scenario-based clinical examination: Proposals for making it feasible.

Introduction: Our faculty used one long case (LC) and three short cases for the clinical component of the final professional examinations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the LC had to be replaced with scenario-based clinical examination (SBCE) due to the impracticability of using recently hospitalised patients. While keeping the short case component as usual, the LC had to be replaced with SBCE in 2020 for the first time at a short notice.

Living through the COVID-19 Pandemic: Impact and Lessons on Dietary Behavior and Physical Well-Being.

The aim of this review is to highlight the spectrum on which human behavior has been affected by blanket restriction measures and on a wider scale, the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the human behaviors that have been impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown are dietary behavior and nutrition, food options and food delivery usage, physical activity and sedentary behaviors. This is important in planning effective public health strategies with minimal detriment to all subsets of society as well as improving the distribution of government aid to populations that are more severely affected.

Chronic Subdural Hematoma Drainage Under Local Anesthesia with Sedation versus General Anesthesia and Its Outcome.

Background: Burr hole drainage is the criterion standard treatment for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), a common neurosurgical condition. However, apart from the surgical technique, the method of anesthesia also has a significant impact on postoperative patient outcome. Currently, there are limited studies comparing the use of local anesthesia with sedation (LA sedation) versus general anesthesia (GA) in the drainage of CSDH.

Relationship between apoptotic markers (Bax and Bcl-2) and biochemical markers in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Introduction: Bax is essential for apoptosis in normal cells. However, overexpression of Bcl-2 enhances cell survival by suppressing apoptosis in cells subjected to apoptosis-inducing stimuli. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of apoptotic (Bax and Bcl-2) and biochemical markers in type 2 diabetics mellitus.

Lyn deficiency reduces GATA-1, EKLF and STAT5, and induces extramedullary stress erythropoiesis.

In vitro studies have implicated the Lyn tyrosine kinase in erythropoietin signaling. In this study, we show that J2E erythroid cells lacking Lyn have impaired signaling and reduced levels of transcription factors STAT5a, EKLF and GATA-1. Since mice lacking STAT5, EKLF or GATA-1 have red cell abnormalities, this study also examined the erythroid compartment of Lyn(-/-) mice.

Dominant action of mutated erythropoietin receptors on differentiation in vitro and erythroleukemia development in vivo.

J2E cells produce rapid, fatal erythroleukemias in vivo but still respond to erythropoietin (epo) in vitro by differentiating, proliferating and remaining viable in the absence of serum. Mutant epo receptors were introduced into these cells to determine whether they could influence the different biological responses to epo in vitro and the development of erythroleukemias. Three mutant receptors were used as cytoplasmic truncation mutants Delta257 and Delta321 (above box 1 and below box 2 respectively), and the cytoplasmic point mutant W282R (defective for JAK2 activation).
