Background: Despite significant efforts to control malaria infections in recent years, new infection rates continue to pose a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. This study aims to identify the key factors of malaria infection among children under five years (U5) in the Gursum district of Somali region, Eastern Ethiopia.

Methods: An institution-based case-control study was conducted over two months, from June to July 2020.

The Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi commissioned us to scope the regulatory challenges for air pollution.

Background: Recurrent dehydration causes chronic kidney disease in humans and animal models. The dromedary camel kidney has remarkable capacity to preserve water and solute during long-term dehydration. In this study, we investigated the effects of dehydration and subsequent rehydration in the camel's kidney histology/ultrastructure and changes in aquaporin/solute carrier proteins along with gene expression.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a heterogeneous group of potentially harmful molecules that can form as a result of a non-enzymatic reaction between reducing sugars and proteins, lipids, or nucleic acids. The total body pool of AGEs reflects endogenously produced AGEs as well as exogeneous AGEs that come from sources such as diet and the environment. Engagement of AGEs with their cellular receptor, the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), which is expressed on the surface of various cell types, converts a brief pulse of cellular activation to sustained cellular dysfunction and tissue destruction.

Sixteen novel thiazolidinedione (TZD) and rhodanine (RD) derivatives were designed and synthesized by introducing a pyrimidine moiety at different sites of pioglitazone's structure. The effects of synthesized compounds on regulating glucose metabolism, improving insulin sensitivity, and activating the peroxisome proliferator-activated γ receptor (PPAR-γ) were evaluated in βTC6 cells. Smoking-associated Downregulation of FILIP1L Enhances Lung Adenocarcinoma Progression Through Mucin Production, Inflammation, and Fibrosis.

We show that downregulation of Filamin A interacting protein 1-like (FILIP1L) is a driver of LUAD progression. Cigarette smoking causes its downregulation by promoter methylation in LUAD.

Investigation of a herpesvirus outbreak in mixed breeds of adult domestic ducks using next generation sequencing.

This report characterizes the first lethal outbreak of Marek's disease on a large farm of mixed-breed adult ducks (>18,000) and identifies the pathogen that resulted in high mortality (35%). Clinical signs included inappetence, respiratory distress, depression, muscle weakness, and ataxia. Post mortem revealed enlarged fragile liver mottled with miliary whitish spots and an enlarged spleen.

The development of animal models to study cell death in the brain is a delicate task. One of the models, that was discovered in the late eighties, is the induction of neurodegeneration through glucocorticoid withdrawal by adrenalectomy in albino rats. Such a model is one of the few noninvasive models for studying neurodegeneration.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges of Chronic Portal Vein Thrombosis Secondary to Myeloproliferative Neoplasm in Sub-Saharan Region: A Series of Cases and Literature Review.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are the commonest causes of non-cirrhotic abdominal vein thrombosis. MPN was observed in 30-40% with Budd Chiari Syndrome (BCS) and portal vein thrombosis (PVT), whereas this is the cause in only a minority of other types of venous thrombosis. Herein, we report 10 cases of chronic PVT secondary to Janus Kinase 2 gene (JAk 2) positive myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN).

Water conservation is vital for life in the desert. The dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) produces low volumes of highly concentrated urine, more so when water is scarce, to conserve body water. Two hormones, arginine vasopressin and oxytocin, both produced in the supraoptic nucleus, the core hypothalamic osmoregulatory control centre, are vital for this adaptive process, but the mechanisms that enable the camel supraoptic nucleus to cope with osmotic stress are not known.
