Background: Many techniques exist for subcutaneous mastectomy in female-to-male transgender patients. The authors review outcomes for two techniques and present an algorithm to aid surgeons in technique selection.
Methods: One hundred one consecutive female-to-male transgender patients undergoing subcutaneous mastectomy using the concentric circular or free nipple graft technique were retrospectively reviewed.
Background: The impact of post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) on patient-centered outcomes of breast reconstruction remains unclear. This comprehensive review aims to consolidate the available data regarding aesthetic outcomes, patient satisfaction, and the BREAST-Q following breast reconstruction in the setting of PMRT to facilitate the informed consent and shared decision-making process.
Materials And Methods: A systematic search of the literature published from 2000 to 2016 in the PubMed/MEDLINE database was performed to identify all manuscripts reporting aesthetic outcome, patient satisfaction, or BREAST-Q scores of patients undergoing PMRT and breast reconstruction.
Social media has increasingly changed the landscape of medicine and surgery and is rapidly expanding its influence in most peoples' lives. The average person spends nearly 2 hours per day using social media, consuming information about everything from family updates to entertainment news to presidential elections. The concentration of consumers on social media platforms has resulted in direct medicine and medical products marketing to consumers.

Study aims are to describe the burden of AROs in burn patients admitted to a tertiary burn unit, to evaluate the impact of contact precautions implemented after an outbreak of antibiotic-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, and to identify possible predictors of ARO acquisition.
Methods: Data of burn inpatients between 2006 and 2010 were retrospectively reviewed.
Halsted's principle of radical mastectomy influenced cancer treatment for decades. Randomized controlled trials resulted in a paradigm shift to less radical surgery and the use of adjuvant therapies. Oncologic reconstruction performed by plastic surgeons has evolved, ranging from skin grafts and local flaps for smaller defects to pedicled flaps and free flaps for larger and more complex defects.

The authors examined four factors that aid in decision-making: donor-site morbidity, need for surgery related to abdominal morbidity, operative time, and complications.
Methods: This is a retrospective review of patients undergoing breast reconstruction using the DIEP or pTRAM flap at the University of British Columbia between 2002 and 2013.
Background: An increasing number of women who undergo immediate two-stage tissue expander/implant breast reconstruction will require postmastectomy radiation therapy. An important variable is the timing of radiotherapy relative to surgery. The authors report their experience treating a large consecutive series of patients who underwent postmastectomy radiation therapy to the tissue expander before exchange for a permanent implant.

The objective of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the rate of MFN in patients undergoing immediate alloplastic versus immediate autologous breast reconstruction. The secondary objective was to identify additional patient and surgical factors that may influence the rate of MFN.

While much is known about clinical variables that may influence satisfaction, little is known about how the process of care may affect patient perceptions of outcome. The aim of this study was to examine how preoperative information and interactions with the surgical and medical teams might influence patient satisfaction with the outcome.

Alloplastic surgery continues to evolve with the introduction of new prostheses to the breast reconstruction market but with limited patient-reported outcomes data. Evaluating the outcomes of surgical interventions and their impact on patients is imperative to improve the patient decision-making process and to improve quality of care.

To evaluate the success of surgical and nonsurgical interventions in facial paralysis patients, patient satisfaction and impact on quality of life should be considered. The objective of this study is to identify existing patient-reported outcome instruments that measure quality-of-life outcomes in the facial paralysis population.

Background: The effectiveness of impervious wound edge protectors for reduction of SSI remains unclear.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted in Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library to identify RCTs that evaluate the risk of SSI after gastrointestinal and biliary surgeries with and without the use of an impervious wound protector.
Purpose: To describe the clinical outcomes of patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy and preoperative radiotherapy, followed by skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) and immediate autologous breast reconstruction (IABR).
Methods: A retrospective review of 30 LABC patients who underwent SSM and IABR between 1997 to 2007 was performed. Data were drawn from patient records and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Breast Reconstruction and British Columbia Cancer Agency databases.
Objective: To evaluate whether the addition of intracameral lidocaine to topical anaesthesia during cataract surgery leads to a decrease in the administration of intraoperative midazolam and fentanyl.
Design: Retrospective case-control study.
Participants: The eyes of 124 patients undergoing phacoemulsification were included in the study, with 62 in the intracameral group and 62 in the control group.
Background: In recent years, there has been a growing acceptance of the value of breast reconstruction. The majority of women who choose to proceed will undergo alloplastic reconstruction. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether the type of implant used in alloplastic breast reconstruction has an impact on patient-reported satisfaction and quality of life.

Methods: An online survey was offered to every member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) with a registered email address.
