Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and sickle cell disease (SCD) are distinct multisystemic diseases that commonly affect blacks. There are few reports of their co-existence in Western literature and a paucity of reports in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their co-existence is associated with diagnostic delay and treatment dilemmas.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on semen quality, i.
Background/objective: Rheumatic diseases (RMDs) are among the leading health burdens and causes of disability globally. Interestingly, they are on the rise due to the increasingly ageing population. Inflammatory RMDs are not left behind in the rise, especially in Africa, where they were thought to be rare as there has been increasing reportage of these diseases in recent years.

This review aims to summarize the current evidence on the impact of exercise on male reproduction, including reproductive hormone regulation, spermatogenesis sperm quality, and fertility. Moderate exercise improves sperm quality, increasing count, motility, and morphology, while excessive and severe exercise may have detrimental effects.

Since cisplatin-induced testicular damage is mediated by inflammation and oxidative stress, evaluation of the protective role of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory molecules such as micronized purified flavonoid fraction (Daflon®) is pertinent.
Aim: Therefore, this study investigated the mitigating effect of daflon against cisplatin-induced testicular toxicity.
This study explored the flavonoid-rich extract of beetroot ( L.) for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) dual therapy by using and molecular simulation studies. Flavonoid-rich extracts of fruit were evaluated for their antidiabetic and anti-alzheimic activities.

We used whole genome sequence analysis to provide insights into the resistomes, mobilomes and virulomes of 14 beta-lactams resistant Enterobacterales isolated from water and wet-sand at four recreational beaches in Lagos, Nigeria. Carriage of multiple beta-lactamase genes was detected in all isolates except two, including six isolates carrying bla.

Introduction: trichoscopic and histopathological evaluation of non-scarring systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) alopecia is uncommon. We aimed to document the prevalence, pattern of hair loss, trichoscopic and histopathologic differences between systemic lupus erythematosus patients with and without hair loss.
Methods: this was a cross-sectional comparative study of 75 systemic lupus erythematosus patients, 36 with hair loss from February to December 2020.
Introduction: Family physicians are often the first healthcare providers to encounter patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Nigeria, given the paucity of rheumatology services nationwide. This study aimed to assess and address the knowledge gap regarding RA among family physicians in Nigeria.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey involving 609 family physicians from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria was conducted in October 2022.
Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis has been infrequently reported among African black populations. Recent data have shown increasing reportage. Comorbidities are increasingly recognised as important in the overall morbidity, mortality and response to management.

There is wide variability in the reported incidence and prevalence rate globally, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Nigeria had very few isolated reports of SLE from private and public hospitals Therefore, we conducted this large multi-center descriptive study to determine the sociodemographic, clinical profile, laboratory patterns, and treatment among Nigerian lupus patients.

Untreated wastewater emanating from healthcare facilities are risk factors for the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) at the human-environment interface. In this study, we investigated the determinants of resistance in three multidrug resistant strains of Proteus mirabilis isolated from untreated wastewater collected from three government owned hospitals in Ibadan, Nigeria. Despite showing low-level resistance to ciprofloxacin, whole genome sequencing revealed the transferable mechanism of quinolone resistance (TMQR) gene qnrD3 carried on Col3M plasmids in all the isolates.

Objectives: To determine the pattern of RA and medications used in its management at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Nigeria.
Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study of RA patients, aged >18 years, satisfying the American college of rheumatology (ACR)/European alliance of associations for rheumatology (EULAR) 2010 and/or ACR 1987 classification criteria seen over six years (January 2015 to December 2020) at UMTH.
The environmental prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has come into focus under the One Health concept. Wastewater treatment systems are among the significant sources of AMR in the environment. In such systems, it is uncertain to which extent antimicrobials present at sub-inhibitory concentrations constitute a selective pressure for bacterial maintenance and acquisition of antibiotic resistance (AR) genes.

Elective hip and knee arthroplasty numbers are increasing globally, and the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) has endorsed standards for obtaining written consent for these procedures. Many centres in the United Kingdom and globally, use handwritten consent forms to document informed consent, leaving open the potential for missing out important procedure and risk-related information.

Staphylococcus species colonises humans and animals and is a major food contaminant with public health significance. Here, we assessed the occurrence of methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS) in the pig-production chain in Ibadan, Nigeria. Nares of 120 pigs and 10 farmers were sampled with sterile swabs whilst 54 pork samples were collected from a retail slaughterhouse.

When used for rheumatic diseases, they are monoclonal antibodies targeting wide range of peptide mediators (cytokines), receptors and cells. They have complex structures and are about 200 to 1000 times larger than chemical molecule drugs.

There is paucity of data regarding the prevalence of osteoporosis in Nigerian women. This study was carried out to evaluate the frequency of osteoporosis among Nigerian women with degenerative skeletal diseases and fractures who visited our hospital so as to suggest prevention and early treatment in order to reduce the occurrence of fragility fractures.

Global attention and support, together with better health policies and planning, have improved outcomes for many infectious diseases; thus, increasing attention is being turned to chronic non-communicable diseases. Rheumatic diseases were previously considered to be rare among Africans but there is now a growing interest in these conditions, particularly as the number of rheumatologists on the continent increases.

Generalized OA (GOA) is associated with greater morbidity and accounts for 5-25% of total OA cases depending on definition used. This paper aims to determine the frequency and pattern of GOA, compare clinical and laboratory parameters of GOA and non-GOA subjects, then identify independent associations of GOA among Nigerians with knee OA.

It is unclear whether an association exists between adolescents' perception of family support and family functioning and sexual risk behavior. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 702 adolescent students (aged 15-19 years) of a university in Nigeria and assessed high-risk sexual behavior (HRSB) and their judgment of family functioning and support.
