Prediction of blood pressure variability during thrombectomy using supervised machine learning and outcomes of patients with ischemic stroke from large vessel occlusion.

Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is the standard of care for patients with acute ischemic stroke from large vessel occlusion (AIS-LVO). The association of blood pressure variability (BPV) during MT and outcomes are unknown. We leveraged a supervised machine learning algorithm to predict patient characteristics that are associated with BPV indices.

Association between resuscitation in the critical care resuscitation unit and in-hospital mortality.

Introduction: Patients who present in shock have high expected mortality and early resuscitation is crucial to improve their outcomes. The Critical Care Resuscitation Unit (CCRU) is a specialized unit at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) that prioritizes early resuscitation of critically ill patients. We hypothesized that lactate clearance and reduction of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score during CCRU stay would be associated with lower in-hospital mortality.

Patterns of opioid prescribing in emergency departments during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic was superimposed upon an ongoing epidemic of opioid use disorder and overdose deaths. Although the trend of opioid prescription patterns (OPP) had decreased in response to public health efforts before the pandemic, little is known about the OPP from emergency department (ED) clinicians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: We conducted a pre-post study of adult patients who were discharged from 13 EDs and one urgent care within our academic medical system between 01/01/2019 and 09/30/2020 using an interrupted time series (ITS) approach.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome Initiated by an Adverse Reaction to Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole.

The authors present a case of a 54-year-old male who presented to the ED with Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS) beginning on his upper lips, then spreading to his glans penis, airway, and buttocks. After using trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) to treat a pilonidal cyst diagnosed seven days prior to presentation, the patient began to have desquamating lesions on his upper and lower lips. Subsequently, he noticed desquamation on the glans penis and then between his buttocks.
