A Student Teaching Assistant Program for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Antiracism Curricular Enhancement.

Problem: In the United States, physician bias is exhibited early in medical training and contributes to systemic inequities within the field of medicine. A lack of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism (DEI-AR) content within medical curricula drives critical gaps in knowledge and deficiencies when preparing medical students to serve patients of diverse backgrounds. At the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine (MCASOM), student-led curricular reviews between 2017 to 2018 and 2020 to 2021 revealed opportunities to improve DEI-AR content within preclinical courses.

Cervical Spinal Cord Stimulation: A Review.

Purpose Of Review: This literature review critically examines existing studies on cervical spinal cord stimulation (cSCS) for the treatment of chronic pain. The objective is to evaluate the current evidence, identify knowledge gaps, and collate data to inform clinical decision-making and suggest future research avenues. The review covers indications, contraindications, surgical and anesthetic approaches, trials, efficacy, and complications of cSCS.

Decomposing the rural-urban disparities in overweight and obesity among women of reproductive age in Nigeria.

Background: Overweight and obese women face various reproductive and other health challenges, and in some cases, even mortality. Despite evidence of rural-urban disparities in overweight and obesity among women of reproductive age, there is limited evidence regarding the predictors of these disparities. This study aims to investigate the factors associated with overweight and obesity and examine the contributors to rural-urban disparities in overweight and obesity among women of reproductive age in Nigeria.

Research participants' perception of ethical issues in stroke genomics and neurobiobanking research in Africa.

Background: There is a growing interest in stroke genomics and neurobiobanking research in Africa. These raise several ethical issues, such as consent, re-use, data sharing, storage, and incidental result of biological samples. Despite the availability of ethical guidelines developed for research in Africa, there is paucity of information on how the research participants' perspectives could guide the research community on ethical issues in stroke genomics and neurobiobanking research.

Determinants of Kangaroo Mother Care among low-birth-weight infants in low resource settings.

Kangaroo Mother Care involves direct contact between a baby's bare skin and a caregiver, typically the mother. It has many benefits for both baby and caregiver and is often used to regulate body temperature, promote breastfeeding, enhance growth, and bonding. This study aims to explore factors associated with Kangaroo Mother Care uptake in low-resource countries for babies born with low-birth-weight.

Organized multi-disciplinary stroke team care improves acute stroke outcomes in resource limited settings; Results of a retrospective study from a Nigerian tertiary hospital.

Background: Evidence for the impact of organized stroke multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) on outcomes in Africa is sparse.

Aim: To compare stroke outcomes, before and after the establishment (September 16, 2016) of a pioneer MDT at a tertiary hospital in southern Nigeria.

Methods: Using a retrospective, observational study design, the in-patient record of all stroke patients admitted between September 2014 to September 2018 was retrieved and rigorously reviewed.

Multimodal Retinal Imaging Findings in Hardikar Syndrome.

Purpose: To describe the syndromic, clinical, and retinal findings of a patient with an extremely-rare genetic condition known as Hardikar Syndrome (HS) with presentation of optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fluorescein angiographic (FA), and indocyanine green angiographic (ICG) findings.

Methods: Clinical course was detailed and followed over time with examinations and multimodal imaging.

The role of phytogenic feed additives in stress mitigation in broiler chickens.

The increase in global temperature and consumers' welfare has increased the use of phytogenic feed additives (PFA) to mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on chickens in recent years. Various bioactive compounds capable of improving the thermotolerance of broiler chickens during exposure to thermal challenges have been identified in different plant species and parts. This review is an overview of the roles of bioactive compounds of different PFA, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, antioxidants, growth-promoting and immune-modulating agents, in heat stress management in broiler chickens.

SPONTANEOUS IMPROVEMENT OF MYOPIC RETINOSCHISIS AFTER A LONG-TERM OBSERVATIONAL PERIOD: A CASE SERIES.

Purpose: To highlight spontaneous resolution or improvement of myopic retinoschisis (MR) in actively surveilled patients.

Methods: Case series of five patients diagnosed with MR who did not undergo pars plana vitrectomy and were carefully monitored by a single retina specialist. Ocular and medical history were reviewed, and clinical characteristics including visual acuity and the status of the MR were monitored with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) at each clinic visit.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers for Diagnosis and the Prognostication of Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review.

Despite the high incidence and burden of stroke, biological biomarkers are not used routinely in clinical practice to diagnose, determine progression, or prognosticate outcomes of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Because of its direct interface with neural tissue, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a potentially valuable source for biomarker development. This systematic review was conducted using three databases.

Cannabis for the Treatment of Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review.

Fibromyalgia is a common disease syndrome characterized by chronic pain and fatigue in conjunction with cognitive dysfunction such as memory difficulties. Patients currently face a difficult prognosis with limited treatment options and a diminished quality of life. Given its widespread use and potential efficacy in treating other types of pain, cannabis may prove to be an effective treatment for fibromyalgia.

Cohort event monitoring for safety signal detection in adult individuals 18 years and above after immunisation with coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines in Nigeria.

Introduction: In Nigeria, immunisation with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines commenced in March 2021. COVISHIELD from AstraZeneca (AZ), a viral vector vaccine, was the brand administered in the first phase of vaccinations for pre-determined eligible adults 18 years and above. As more brands of COVID-19 vaccines have been introduced in Nigeria, identifying effective and safe vaccine brands is essential to pharmacovigilance and public health.

Background: Every minute, six indigenous Africans develop new strokes. Patient-level and system-level contributors to early stroke fatality in this region are yet to be delineated. The relationship between man and substances that have abuse potentials, and whose use has been associated with the development or progression of substance use disorders has continued to evolve in terms of geography, economic implications, and time. History shows that local plants with psychoactive constituents can get exported worldwide through global travel, commerce, or even conquest. Time and globalization also change people's relationship with substances of abuse; hence, an area that was initially alien to certain substances might evolve to becoming a trafficking hub, and then a destination.

Socioeconomic predictors of cost and length of stay for erythroderma: a cross-sectional analysis of the national inpatient sample.

Erythroderma is an uncommon but serious dermatologic disorder that often requires hospitalization for diagnosis and treatment. However, little is known about predictors influencing cost and patient outcomes.
