Article Synopsis
  • Five-year survival rates for vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) patients in Italy haven't improved over the past 30 years, which raises concerns about treatment effectiveness.
  • A study of cancer registries found that in 2018, about 6,620 women in Italy were living with VSCC, but only 32% of newly diagnosed patients are considered curable, with many facing high mortality rates even after five years.
  • The results highlight a critical need to revamp the vulvar care approach in Italy to better address the ongoing challenges in managing VSCC.

This study aims to estimate long-term survival, cancer prevalence, and several cure indicators for Italian women with gynecological cancers. Thirty-one cancer registries, representing 47% of the Italian female population, were included. Mixture cure models were used to estimate net survival, cure fraction, time to cure (when 5-year conditional net survival becomes > 95%), cure prevalence (women who will not die of cancer), and already cured (living longer than time to cure).

A steady increase in the incidence and mortality burden correlated to thin melanomas (≤1 mm) has been reported in recent years in some international studies, but there is currently a paucity of data from the Mediterranean area. We aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics of thin melanoma in Tuscany, Central Italy. A total of 6002 first cutaneous invasive melanomas occurring from 1985 to 2017 were selected for analysis; data were retrieved from the local population-based cancer registry.

Background: Esophageal cancer survival is poor worldwide, though there is some variation. Differences in the distribution of anatomical sub-site and morphological sub-type may help explain international differences in survival for all esophageal cancers combined. We estimated survival by anatomic sub-site and morphological sub-type to understand further the impact of topography and morphology on international comparisons of esophageal cancer survival.

Unlabelled: Vulvar lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory disease involving vulvar skin. The risk of developing invasive vulvar cancer for women with LS is reported in the literature, but the risk of extra-vulvar tumors has been under-investigated. This multicentric study aims to estimate the risk of developing cancers in a cohort of women with a diagnosis of vulvar lichen sclerosus.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates survival trends in vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) in Italy from 1990 to 2015, revealing stagnation in survival rates.
  • Analysis of data from 38 cancer registries indicated a decrease in 1-year and 2-year net survival rates, while 5-year conditional survival showed a slight increase but was not statistically significant.
  • The findings suggest that current treatment and control strategies for VSCC need to be re-evaluated in Italy and worldwide due to the lack of improvement in survival outcomes.

Clinical outcomes of melanoma patients pointed out a gender disparity that supports a correlation between sex hormone activity on estrogen receptors (ER) and melanoma development and progression. Here, we found that the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of melanoma cells induced by extracellular acidosis, which is a crucial hallmark of solid cancers, correlates with the expression of ERβ, the most representative ER on melanoma cells. Extracellular acidosis induces an enhanced expression of ERβ in female cells and EMT markers remain unchanged, while extracellular acidosis did not induce the expression of ERβ in male cells and EMT was strongly promoted.

Introduction: Invasive breast cancer prognosis has significantly improved over time; however, there are few data about the long-term survival.

Materials And Methods: We analysed the data on female breast cancer incident during 2004-2005 in the area of the Tuscan Cancer Registry, distinguishing them in five subtypes, according to ER, PgR, HER2, and Ki67 expression: luminal A, luminal B, luminal B/HER2 + , triple-negative, and HER2 + . Effects of subtypes and age on 10 years breast cancer specific survival were analysed by Kaplan-Meier and multivariate Cox analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how breast cancer stage at diagnosis, patient age, and molecular tumor subtype affect survival rates among an Italian population.
  • Researchers analyzed data from nearly 8,831 women diagnosed with primary breast cancer between 2010 and 2012, categorizing them into three age groups and four molecular subtypes based on hormone receptor and HER2 status.
  • Findings indicated that older age groups and specific tumor subtypes, particularly triple-negative tumors and those with brain metastases, were associated with lower five-year survival rates.

In Oceania, North America and north-western Europe, after decades of increase, cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) rates began to stabilise or decline before 2000. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the reversal of the incidence trend is extending to southern Europe. To obtain a formal confirmation, this nationwide study from Italy investigated the incidence trends by birth cohort.

The long-term survival of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients and the need to perform several treatments with radioiodine (131-I) lead to the question if the lifetime risk of developing a nonthyroidal second primary cancer (NTSPC) is increased in these patients. In our study, we assessed the prevalence of NTSPCs in thyroid cancer population and evaluated the possible causative role of 131-I treatment. We analyzed 1096 consecutive patients followed at our institution from 1964 to 1998.
