Background: Reference values for right ventricular dimension and systolic function in Nigerian children are scarce despite their high burden of right ventricular abnormalities. Reference values from other countries may not be suitable for use in Nigerian children because of possible racial variations in cardiac size.

Purpose: To develop reference values for right ventricular dimension and systolic function in healthy Nigerian children aged 5-12 years.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is the least studied complication of nephrotic syndrome (NS). Risk factors which predispose children with NS to developing PAD include hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and prolonged use of steroids. The development of PAD significantly increases the morbidity and mortality associated with NS as such children are prone to sudden cardiac death.

Background: The 6-minute walk test (6MWT), a simple, reliable, and valid test that uses the distance walked in 6 minute walk distance (6MWD) to quantify functional capacity, is widely used in the management of chronic disorders. However, the absence of reference standards from sub-Saharan African, including Nigerian, school-aged children limits its utility in this age group.

Objectives: To develop normative values and equations for the 6MWD of school-aged Nigerian children.

Background: Correction of vitamin D deficiency through administration of either vitamin D or D has been shown to reduce chronic bone pains and frequency of acute bone pains, increase bone density as well as improve growth stature in children with sickle cell anemia (SCA). Findings vary on the effectiveness of the two forms of the vitamin. The current study was carried out to compare the effectiveness of a 6-week treatment course of vitamin D and D in the correction of hypovitaminosis D (vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency) as well as evaluate treatment response to derangement of serum calcium and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in children with SCA in steady state.

There is a need to generate data that demonstrate preparedness (or a lack of it) of adolescents to crossover to adult care to inform policy and create appropriate models in LMICs. This cross-sectional survey of 252 adolescents (15-19 years) receiving HIV-care assessed sociodemographic characteristics, clinical and ART status, and HIV-related behaviors. Also, the study appraised HIV status awareness, and disclosure, and access to healthcare.

Purpose: The study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of interactive and tailored short message reminders on antiretroviral therapy adherence among adolescents (15-19 years) living with HIV in southwest Nigeria.

Methods: The study was a single-blind, parallel-design (ratio 1:1), and multicenter RCT of 209 medication-non-adherent adolescents living with HIV at HIV clinics in two states in southwest Nigeria. The research assessed ART adherence using the visual analog scale, viral suppression, pill count, and ACTG scores; the feasibility of the intervention by the SMS delivery and response (overall and individual) rates; and acceptability using self-report, willingness to continue receiving the intervention, and desire for its scale-up.

Unlabelled: Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is a common, devastating neurological complication of sickle cell disorder (SCD) with a high recurrent and mortality rate. The Stroke Prevention Trial in Sickle Cell Anaemia study (STOP) recommends routine screening with transcranial Doppler ultrasonography in children aged two to sixteen years with SCD. The present study assessed cerebral blood flow velocities of children with SCD in accordance with the recommendation of routine screening by the STOP study.

The larval habitats of mosquitoes were investigated in Abeokuta, Nigeria in order to determine the breeding sites of the existing mosquito fauna and its possible public health implications on the residents of the City. The habitats were sampled between August 2005 and July 2006 using plastic dippers and a pipette. The habitats were grouped as ground pools/ponds, gutters/open drains, tyres, domestic containers and treeholes/ leaf axils.

Some of the important mosquito species are generally sympatric in terms of their geographical distributions, and are difficult to identify based solely on examination of adult females using the available morphological keys. In this study, adult mosquitoes were collected indoors in Abeokuta in south-western Nigeria between August 2005 and July 2006 using Center for Disease Control light traps. The objective was to investigate possible morphological differences in populations of Culex quinquefasciatus and Mansonia africana.
