Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a monogenic disorder that affects 100,000 African-Americans and millions of people worldwide. Intra-erythrocytic polymerization of sickle hemoglobin (HbS) promotes erythrocyte sickling, impaired rheology, ischemia and hemolysis, leading to the development of progressive liver injury in SCD. Liver-resident macrophages and monocytes are known to enable the clearance of HbS; however, the role of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC) in HbS clearance and liver injury in SCD remains unknown.

Introduction: The hemogram and hemogram-derivative ratios (HDRs) are becoming markers of the severity and mortality of COVID-19. We evaluated the hemograms and serial weekly HDRs [neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-platelet ratio (NPR) and systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII)] in the survivors and non-survivors of COVID-19.

Intravascular hemolysis (IH) contributes to the development of endothelial dysfunction (ED) in sickle cell anemia (SCA), and the effects of hydroxyurea (HU, the only approved drug that decreases the frequency and severity of vaso-oclussive crises) on IH and ED in SCA remain unclear. We evaluated and compared the markers of IH among steady-state adult Brazilians with SCA and HbAA individuals. Overall, this cross-sectional study enrolled 30 SCA patients not receiving HU therapy (HbSS), 25 SCA patients receiving HU therapy (HbSS_HU), and 32 HbAA volunteers (HbAA).

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) pathophysiology is characterized by the activation of sickle red blood cells, reticulocytes, leukocytes, platelets, and endothelial cells, and with the expression of several inflammatory molecules. Therefore, it is conceivable that variations in levels of proinflammatory cytokines may act as a signaling of differential clinical course in SCA. Background And Objectives: Inflammatory markers that influence bone pain crisis (BPC) and other complications of sickle cell anaemia (SCA) are numerous and play various roles. This study determined the plasma levels of tumour necrosis factor (TNF) - α, interleukin - 8 (IL-8), and endothelin - 1 (ET-1) in adult SCA patients during BPC and in steady state.
