Article Synopsis
  • - Nigeria aims to limit industrial trans fatty acids (iTFA) in food to improve public health, specifically targeting ischaemic heart disease (IHD), but the impact and costs are unclear.
  • - Using Markov cohort models, researchers estimated that a mandatory iTFA limit would prevent nearly 10,000 IHD deaths and save around $90 million in healthcare costs over the first decade.
  • - The analysis suggests that implementing this policy is cost-effective and could lead to significant health benefits, supporting the idea of regulating iTFAs as a beneficial health strategy for Nigeria.

This report documents the development of the 2016 National Hospital Care Survey (NHCS) Co-occurring Disorders Algorithm, which can be used to identify patients with an opioid-involved hospital encounter who had lifetime diagnoses of both a substance use disorder and a selected mental health issue. Lifetime diagnoses are defined as diagnoses at any point in the past or during the current encounter. This algorithm was created to complement the earlier NHCS Enhanced Opioid Identification Algorithm designed to improve the classification of patients with opioid-involved hospital encounters.

Ebola virus (EBV) disease is a globally acknowledged public health emergency, endemic in the west and equatorial Africa. To understand the epidemiology especially the dynamic pattern of EBV disease, we analyse the EBV case notification data for confirmed cases and reported deaths of the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between 2018 and 2019, and examined the impact of reported violence on the spread of the virus. Using fully Bayesian geo-statistical analysis through stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) allows us to quantify the spatial patterns at every point of the spatial domain.
