Background: Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease, affects approximately 40 million women of reproductive age contributing to preventable anaemia during pregnancy, intrauterine growth retardation and low birth weight. In spite of the high prevalence rate of this disease among school aged children in Abakaliki, no study in Abakaliki has looked at the burden of Schistosomal infection in pregnancy with a view to determining maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Objective: To determine the association between schistosomal infection and maternal anemia, low birth weight, and other neonatal outcomes in Abakaliki.

Article Synopsis
  • Cadmium (Cd) causes oxidative stress in organisms, while the ethnomedicinal plant Tetrapleura tetraptera (Tt) is known for its high antioxidant properties and potential to treat various diseases.
  • The study involved feeding Drosophila melanogaster different diets, including Tt extracts and cadmium chloride (CdCl), then measuring the impact on oxidative stress markers and fly health after a week.
  • Results showed that T. tetraptera reduced oxidative stress caused by cadmium, improving antioxidant activity, enhancing levels of important compounds, and increasing the rate of offspring emergence, suggesting its potential as a treatment for oxidative stress-related issues.

This study investigates why individuals with multimorbidity-two or more chronic conditions-are more prone to adverse outcomes after surgery. In our cohort, ninety-eight of 144 participants had multimorbidity. The myocardial transcriptome and metabolites involved in energy production were measured in 53 and 57 sequential participants, respectively.

In a previously reported equilibrium study of the reaction of 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoate), DTNB, with various carbonmonoxyhemoglobins over the pH range 5.6 to 9, we obtained contradictory results on the influence of the allosteric effector inositol hexakisphosphate (inositol-P) on the DTNB reaction. For this reason, we replaced the carbonmonoxyhemoglobins with oxyhemoglobins and investigated the effect of inositol-P on the equilibrium and of their reactions with DTNB over the same pH range.

Article Synopsis
  • Over a quarter of participants displayed poor awareness of their own CVD risk, with rural residents scoring significantly lower than urban ones in risk perception.
  • Key factors influencing better CVD risk perception included having tertiary education, residing in urban areas, and living in specific Nigerian states, indicating a need for enhanced public health education and awareness programs.

Background: The Hydrus Microstent has been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of Open-angle Glaucoma. We previously reported 1-year results of the Hydrus Microstent in Black and Afro-Latino patients.

Objective: Here we report two-year results of the Hydrus Microstent in Black and Afro-Latino patients with mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma.

The inclusion of legumes as functional ingredients in a gluten-free extrusion process has been gaining attention in recent times. In this study, sorghum and germinated lima bean flour (100, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50) was extruded (feed moisture - 18%, screw speed - 250 rpm, barrel temperatures 50 °C-120 °C-120 °C, die hole diameter - 3 mm) and analysed for functional, proximate, textural, structural, pasting, microbiological and sensory properties. With 100% sorghum used as control, lima beans addition significantly (p < 0.

Article Synopsis
  • People with HIV (PWH) have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to those without HIV, and the study aimed to evaluate their adherence to CVD medications and factors influencing non-adherence.
  • Conducted at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, this study analyzed data from 162 PWH, with findings indicating that about one-third of patients did not have prescribed medications detected in their urine, particularly highlighting issues with lipid-lowering agents.
  • The analysis showed that a higher number of prescribed medications correlated with non-adherence, emphasizing the need for improved strategies to enhance medication compliance among PWH for better health outcomes.

Background: The safety potential of the methanol extract of (TOM) leaf was evaluated in albino Wistar rats using biochemical, haematological, and histological indices in both acute and sub-chronic toxicity studies.

Methods: The animals were managed following the National Institute of Health (NIH) stipulated protocols for handling laboratory animals. The weight of each animal was recorded upon arrival and monitored throughout the study.

In the oil and gas industry, cement segregation is a significant concern that can have disastrous consequences, such as the failure of cement. The change of hardened cement's properties is observed, resulting in a decrease in its strength and an increase in its permeability. Therefore, providing some solutions to prevent this is crucial.

Single-nucleus analysis allows robust cell-type classification and helps to establish relationships between chromatin accessibility and cell-type-specific gene expression. Here, using samples from 92 women of several genetic ancestries, we developed a comprehensive chromatin accessibility and gene expression atlas of the breast tissue. Integrated analysis revealed ten distinct cell types, including three major epithelial subtypes (luminal hormone sensing, luminal adaptive secretory precursor (LASP) and basal-myoepithelial), two endothelial and adipocyte subtypes, fibroblasts, T cells, and macrophages.

The incidence of human papilloma virus-mediated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has increased over the past 40 years, particularly among young individuals with a favorable prognosis; however, current therapy often leads to unfortunate side effects, such as dysphagia. Despite the emphasis on dysphagia in previous studies, there is an important research gap in understanding the correlation between neuronal changes and patient-reported and functional outcomes in patients with OPSCC. To address this issue, we examined pathologic tissue samples from patients with OPSCC using multiplex immunofluorescence staining and machine learning to correlate tumor-associated neuronal changes with prospectively collected patient-reported and functional outcomes.

Active targeting to cancer involves exploiting specific interactions between receptors on the surface of cancer cells and targeting moieties conjugated to the surface of vectors such that site-specific delivery is achieved. Prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) has proved to be an excellent target for active targeting to prostate cancer. We report the synthesis and use of a PSMA-specific ligand (Glu-NH-CO-NH-Lys) for the site-specific delivery of brusatol- and docetaxel-loaded poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles to prostate cancer.

Background: Military personnel (MP) are exposed to situations such as loneliness and alcohol use that lead to sexual risk behaviours (SRBs) with serious implications for the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Compulsive sexual behaviour disorder (CSBD) is a psychosexual condition that is characterized by a consistent failure to control sexual behaviour and continuation of the behaviour despite the consequences. The prevalence of CSBD is underreported due to the sensitive nature of the behaviour.

Unlabelled: Cancer-induced skeletal muscle defects differ in severity between individuals with the same cancer type. Cancer subtype-specific genomic aberrations are suggested to mediate these differences, but experimental validation studies are very limited. We utilized three different breast cancer patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models to correlate cancer subtype with skeletal muscle defects.

Apixaban is a rare cause of drug-induced leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV). We report a case of apixaban-induced LCV in a 55-year-old male with deep vein thrombosis who developed systemic symptoms and pruritic rash in the bilateral lower extremity after 17 days of apixaban therapy. A skin biopsy confirmed the LCV, and he was diagnosed with apixaban-induced LCV after ruling out all other possible causes.
