Background: Immediate smoking cessation interventions delivered alongside targeted lung health checks (TLHCs) to screen for lung cancer increase self-reported abstinence at 3 months. The impact on longer term, objectively confirmed quit rates remains to be established.
Methods: We followed up participants from two clinical trials in people aged 55-75 years who smoked and took part in a TLHC.
Background: Lung cancer screening programs provide an opportunity to support people who smoke to quit, but the most appropriate model for delivery remains to be determined. Immediate face-to-face smoking cessation support for people undergoing screening can increase quit rates, but it is not known whether remote delivery of immediate smoking cessation counselling and pharmacotherapy in this context also is effective.
Research Question: Does an immediate telephone smoking cessation intervention increase quit rates compared with usual care among a population enrolled in a targeted lung health check (TLHC)?
Study Design And Methods: In a single-masked randomized controlled trial, people 55 to 75 years of age who smoke and attended a TLHC were allocated by day of attendance to receive either immediate telephone smoking cessation intervention (TSI) support (starting immediately and lasting for 6 weeks) with appropriate pharmacotherapy or usual care (UC; very brief advice to quit and signposting to smoking cessation services).
Objectives: Lung cancer screening programmes offer an opportunity to address tobacco dependence in current smokers. The effectiveness of different approaches to smoking cessation in this context has not yet been established. From the analysis of the Raman spectra of 60 biopsy tissue samples, clear differences were identified between the spectra of the quiescent and inflamed tissue. Three carotenoid peaks were found to be approximately twice as intense in the inflamed tissue.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is involved in the underlying pathology of Parkinson's Disease (PD). PINK1 deficiency, which gives rise to familial early-onset PD, is associated with this dysfunction as well as increased oxidative stress. These mice displayed specific but variable reduction of ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase complex activity in mitochondria of heart, liver and skeletal muscle due to a decrease in the expression of mitochondrial DNA-encoded cytochrome b, the catalytic core of the complex. This reduction in mitochondrial function has a profound effect on the myocardium, with replacement of ventricular cardiomyocytes by fibro-fatty tissue.

This mutation results in the substitution of a proline residue for an evolutionary-conserved leucine at position of amino acid 220 near the carboxyl terminus of the mitochondrial protein. The index patient and brother, who had an identical clinical presentation, had >90% mutant mtDNA in cultured skin fibroblasts, lymphocytes, and whole blood.

Study Design: The methods of infertility treatment, number of fetuses, and outcomes of 220 patients referred for multifetal pregnancy reduction were compared over three time periods (1986 to 1989, 1991 to 1992, and 1992 to 1993). Clomiphene, human menopausal gonadotropin, and ovulation stimulation with urofollitropin were compared against gamete intrafallopian transfer, zygote intrafallopian transfer, and in vitro fertilization (assisted reproductive techniques).
Sirenomelus is an invariably lethal congenital anomaly characterized by complete or nearly complete fusion of the lower extremities that occurs in 1 of 60,000 births. In about 50% of cases this condition cannot be diagnosed prenatally because of the associated oligohydramnios that precludes a detailed examination of the fetus. We present a case of sirenomelus in which prenatal diagnosis was aided by color Doppler ultrasonography; visualization of the vitelline artery as a single, large intraabdominal vessel that did not branch in the fetal pelvis but rather coursed ventrally into the umbilical cord proved to be diagnostic of this rare condition.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe have analyzed morphometric measurements from midgestational fetal necropsies and shown that arm and foot lengths are linear relationships versus gestational age (GA). Using foot length as the GA determinant, we found that the ratio of arm:foot length was also a linear relationship and was decreased in trisomy 21 fetuses when compared to age-matched normals. Based on these laboratory findings, we prospectively evaluated the use of the humerus:foot length ratio as a sonographic screening tool for identification of fetuses at risk for trisomy 21.
