Background: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) present with high morbidity and reduce patient's quality of life. There is a gross paucity of data on biofilm-producing bacteria in DFU Infection in North-Western Nigeria. The study sought to determine the biofilm-forming ability of bacteria isolates from DFUs and determine their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern in Zaria, North-Western Nigeria.

Introduction: there is an association between hypogonadism and obesity, chronic hyperglycaemia, and ageing in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM is known to be associated with low testosterone. There is a paucity of data on the risk factors of hypogonadism in Nigerian men with T2DM.

Background: An estimated 75% of Nigerians are at risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) exposure. In an attempt to reduce the menace, the assessment of risk factors associated with HBV infection and general perception of infected individuals is a step in that direction.

Aim Of The Study: This study, therefore, identified exposure to risk factors and general perceptions associated with HBV infection in infected individuals in Zaria, Nigeria.

Background: Infection with the human immune deficiency virus (HIV) is still a prevalent problem in Africa.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypocortisolism among patients with HIV and their clinical profile at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano, Nigeria.

Method: Three hundred and fifty adult patients with HIV infection were recruited from the HIV clinic of AKTH, Kano.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is highly prevalent in Nigeria, with genotype E being the most common strain found in Zaria.
  • A study analyzed blood samples from 165 participants to identify the HBV genotypes, revealing that 83.6% had detectable HBV DNA, mostly in mixed genotypes.
  • The findings showed five HBV genotypes, with HBV/E (97.1%) as the most frequent, followed by HBV/B (82.6%), and lower rates for HBV/A, C, and D, highlighting the mixed nature of infections in the region.

Background: The occurrence of endocrine diseases in people who are infected with HIV is traditionally thought to occur in the setting of AIDS with opportunistic infections and malignancies. However, recent studies find the correlation between hypocortisolism and stage of HIV (CD4 count and WHO clinical stage) inconsistent.

Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included three hundred and fifty (350) consecutive patients with HIV infection.

Background: The relationship between dementia and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in older adults is well established in the literature. However, there have been few studies on this relationship in older adults living in low- and middle-income countries, and most demographic projections predict that older adult population will increase substantially in these regions by 2050.

Methods: In this study, older adults with T2DM attending a tertiary health facility were examined and compared with community-dwelling older adults without T2DM.

Objectives: To determine the dimensions of normal pituitary gland using T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) and to determine their relationship with age and sex.

Materials And Methods: Cranial MRI scans of 100 individuals with clinically normal pituitary function (58 males and 42 females) and in the age range 14-82 years were reviewed in order to obtain volumetric measurements of the pituitary gland. The height, width, and depth of the pituitary were obtained from mid-sagittal and coronal planes, while the volume was calculated from these measured parameters.

Background: Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) using Highly Active Anti-retroviral Therapy (HAART) has led to considerable reduction in morbidity and mortality associated with human Immune deficiency virus (HIV) infection. This has led to increased life expectancy in HIV infected individuals on one hand, and side effects of chronic administration of these drugs on the other. One of such untoward effects is the association of anti-retroviral drugs especially the protease inhibitors (PI's) with metabolic derangements such as dyslipidaemia, lipodystrophy, insulin resistance and rarely Diabetes mellitus.
