Natural killer (NK) cells are classically defined as innate immune cells, but experiments show that mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection in C57BL/6 mice can cause NK cells to undergo antigen-specific proliferation and memory formation, similar to adaptive CD8+ T cells. One shared behavior between CD8+ T cells and NK cells is clonal expansion, where a single stimulated cell proliferates rapidly to form a diverse population of cells. For example, clones derived from single cells are most abundant during expansion when they are primarily CD27-for NK cells and CD62L-for T cells, phenotypes derived from precursor CD27+ and CD62L+ cells, respectively.

Clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes among hospitalised COVID-19 patients in tertiary hospitals in Tanzania, 2021-2022: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: There have been differential mortality rates from COVID-19 in different parts of the world. It is not clear whether the clinical presentation does also differ, thus the need for this study in a sub-Saharan African setting. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical manifestations and outcomes of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in selected tertiary hospitals in Tanzania.

Psychological health and safety of criminal justice workers: a scoping review of strategies and supporting research.

Background: People working in the criminal justice system face substantial occupational stressors due to their roles involving high-risk situations, trauma exposure, heavy workloads, and responsibility for public safety. Consequently, they have a higher prevalence of mental health problems than the general population. Employees identifying as women, Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersexual, Asexual, and all others (2SLGBTQIA+), or Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), may experience additional stressors due to discrimination, harassment, and systemic barriers to seeking and receiving support.

Structural basis of vilazodone dual binding mode to the serotonin transporter.

The serotonin transporter (SERT) plays a pivotal role in regulating serotonin (5-HT) signaling and is a key target in treating psychiatric disorders. SERT has a binding site (S1) for 5-HT that also serves as a high-affinity binding site for antidepressants. The antidepressant vilazodone has been shown to inhibit SERT by binding to an allosteric site.

Targeting deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) and ubiquitin pathway modulators to enhance host defense against bacterial infections.

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens poses a critical global health challenge, necessitating innovative therapeutic approaches. This study explores host-targeted therapies (HTTs) by focusing on deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs), essential modulators of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) that regulate host-pathogen interactions during many bacterial infections. Using -infected macrophages as a model, we identified UPS modulators that enhance bacterial clearance and observed significant changes in DUB expression, particularly USP25, USP46, and Otud7b.

GABAergic modulation of beta power enhances motor adaptation in frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

Introduction: We examined how abnormal prefrontal neurophysiology and changes in gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic (GABAergic) neurotransmission contribute to behavioral impairments in disorders associated with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD).

Methods: We recorded magnetoencephalography during an adaptive visuomotor task from 11 people with behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia, 11 with progressive supranuclear palsy, and 20 age-matched controls. We used tiagabine, a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) re-uptake inhibitor, as a pharmacological probe to assess the role of GABA during motor-related beta power changes.

Identifying the Added Value and Requirements of Telerehabilitation in Home-based Geriatric Rehabilitation: An Exploratory Qualitative Study.

Geriatric rehabilitation (GR) facilities are turning to innovative tools such as telerehabilitation to support home-based treatment due to challenges with population ageing, staff shortages, and mounting budgetary pressures. This study identified the potential added value as well as the requirements of using telerehabilitation in home-based GR, according to stakeholders and potential end-users. This exploratory qualitative study design conducted semi-structured interviews among nineteen care professionals, three patients and one informal caregiver.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to characterize the demographic, social, economic, and clinical factors of trauma surgery patients leaving against medical advice (AMA).

Methods: Data were retroactively obtained from a level-one trauma center in a medium-sized metropolitan area from January 2017 to December 2021. The sample population consisted of patients admitted or treated by the trauma surgical service.

End user evaluation of the Canadian Spinal Cord Injury Physical Activity Guidelines: Barriers and facilitators to uptake and dissemination in the United States.

Objective: To engage U.S. end users to (1) gather information on facilitators and barriers to awareness and adoption of the Canadian Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Physical Activity (PA) guidelines; (2) inform potential adaptations to the presentation and messaging of the guidelines; and (3) develop recommendations for targeted dissemination strategies to promote awareness in the United States.

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) present differently in women and men, influenced by host-microbiome interactions. The roles of sex hormones in CVD outcomes and gut microbiome in modifying these effects are poorly understood. The XCVD study examines gut microbiome mediation of sex hormone effects on CVD risk markers by observing transgender participants undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), with findings expected to extrapolate to cisgender populations.

Structure-Dependent Balance between Excited-State Deactivation Pathways in Cross-Conjugated Molecular Photoswitches.

Diaryl thieno-[3,4-]thiophenes (TT) are photoswitchable compounds that operate through reversible photoinduced cyclization/cycloreversion and have been designed specifically for integration within π-conjugated polymers to switchably manipulate polymer electronic properties. Here we report on how cross conjugating the central TT moiety impacts photocyclization dynamics as interrogated using transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) for a series of switches built with electron-rich substituents that have various electronic interaction strengths with the TT core. For cross-conjugated structures exhibiting a propensity to switch in steady-state photoconversion experiments, ultrafast TAS reveals signatures of rapid dynamics (occurring within <1-10 ps) similar to those observed for unsubstituted switches and that are consistent with photocyclization.

Promoting trans patient autonomy in surgical preparation for phalloplasty and metoidioplasty: results from a community-based cross-sectional survey and implications for preoperative assessments.

Background: Some transgender and nonbinary people undergo phalloplasty and/or metoidioplasty as part of their medical transition process. Across surgical disciplines, a variety of resources are used to assist patients who are preparing for surgeries, including educational materials, workshops, peer support, and lifestyle changes. For gender-affirming surgeries, patients undergoing assessments to discern whether they are ready to undergo the surgery, and to assist them in achieving preparedness when needed.

A Qualitative Study of Barriers and Facilitators to the Uptake of Cardiac Rehabilitation in Octogenarians.

Despite an established evidence-base for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) improving functional outcomes and quality of life and reducing re-hospitalisation, there is limited research on CR for older cardiac patients, who require rehabilitation the most, as they are often very deconditioned due to aortic stenosis (AS). CR uptake in the UK is limited to 52% with national variability of provision and accessibility, and it is a national priority to increase uptake to 85%. Frequently, research has excluded older populations as they are deemed to be too frail or generally not suitable for inclusion.

Fractional Dolphin Tenotomy for Boutonniere Deformity: A Cadaveric Study.

Some scholarships explore video-gaming as a positive, escapist aid benefiting individuals experiencing major depressive disorder (MDD).

Micro-jet formation induced by the interaction of a spherical and toroidal cavitation bubble.

We investigate experimentally and numerically the interaction between a spherical cavitation bubble and a wall-bounded toroidal cavitation bubble. We demonstrate that shock wave focusing following toroidal bubble initiation induces the formation of micro-jets that pierce the spherical bubble in the torus-axis direction away from the surface, strongest in the anti-phase scenario. The velocity of micro-jets is determined by the initial standoff distance of the spherical bubble from the wall and thus from the toroidal bubble, with peak jet velocities approaching 1000m/s.

Background: Video assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (V-CPR) has demonstrated to be efficient in improving CPR quality and patient outcomes, as Emergency Medical Service (EMS) dispatchers can use the video stream of a caller for diagnostic purposes and give instructions in a CPR scenario. However, the new challenges faced by EMS dispatchers during video-guided CPR (V-CPR)-such as analyzing the video stream, providing feedback to the caller, and managing stress-demand innovative solutions. This study explores the feasibility of incorporating an open-source "machine-learning" tool (artificial intelligence - AI), to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy in correctly detecting the actual compression frequency and compression depth in video footage of a simulated CPR.

We report a novel visual illusion that is present in the natural environment. In attempting to cut a banana in half, many people make the side adjacent to the stem shorter, because they see it as longer than it is. This study tested the presence of the banana bisection illusion with outline drawings and a 3D realistic-looking plastic banana.
