Parkinson's Disease: A Systemic Inflammatory Disease Accompanied by Bacterial Inflammagens.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a well-known neurodegenerative disease with a strong association established with systemic inflammation. Recently, the role of the gingipain protease group from was implicated in Alzheimer's disease and here we present evidence, using a fluorescent antibody to detect gingipain R1 (RgpA), of its presence in a PD population. To further elucidate the action of this gingipain, as well as the action of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from , low concentrations of recombinant RgpA and LPS were added to purified fluorescent fibrinogen.

Hospital-based Surveillance for Pediatric Bacterial Meningitis in the Era of the 13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine in Ghana.

Background: Global surveillance for vaccine preventable invasive bacterial diseases has been set up by the World Health Organization to provide disease burden data to support decisions on introducing pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). We present data from 2010 to 2016 collected at the 2 sentinel sites in Ghana.

Methods: Data were collected from children <5 years of age presenting at the 2 major teaching hospitals with clinical signs of meningitis.

Development of an Evolutionary Tree Concept Inventory.

Despite the importance of tree-thinking and evolutionary trees to biology, no appropriately developed concept inventory exists to measure student understanding of these important concepts. To address this need, we developed a multiple-choice concept inventory consisting of 24 pairs of items, and we provide evidence to support its use among undergraduate students. A set of learning outcomes was developed to guide the creation of the concept inventory.

Outcomes Following Major Oncologic Operations for Non-AIDS-Defining Cancers in the HIV Population: A Matched Comparison to the General Population.

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients are living longer due to the availability of antiretroviral therapies, and non-AIDS-defining cancers are becoming more prevalent in this patient population. A paucity of data remains on post-operative outcomes following resection of non-AIDS-defining cancers in the HIV population.

Methods: The National Inpatient Sample was utilized to identify patients who underwent surgical resection for malignancy from 2005 to 2015 (HIV, N = 52,742; non-HIV, N = 11,885,184).

Luminespib plus pemetrexed in patients with non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer.

Background: Luminespib (AUY922) is a second-generation heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitor with demonstrated activity in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Since luminespib reduces levels of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), a key enzymatic target of pemetrexed, we assessed the safety and tolerability of luminespib in combination with pemetrexed in patients with previously treated metastatic non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We also sought to study the pharmacokinetics and correlate tumor dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) expression with clinical response.

A Review of the Most Impactful Published Pharmacotherapy-Pertinent Literature of 2017 and 2018 for Clinicians Caring for Patients with Burn or Inhalation Injuries.

Staying current and evaluating literature related to pharmacotherapy in burn or inhalation injury can be difficult as burn care teams are multidisciplinary and pertinent content can be spread across a plethora of journals. The goal of this review is to critically evaluate recently published pharmacotherapy-pertinent literature, assist practitioners staying current, and better identify potential future research targets. Twelve board-certified clinical pharmacists with experience caring for patients with burn and inhalation injuries reviewed and graded scientific literature published in 2017 and 2018.

Cardiometabolic thresholds for peak 30-min cadence and steps/day.

Purpose: To provide empirically-supported thresholds for step-based intensity (i.e., peak 30-min cadence; average of the top 30 steps/min in a day) and steps/day in relation to cardiometabolic health outcomes.

Noteworthy Literature Published in 2018 for Thoracic Organ Transplantation.

Publications of note from 2018 are reviewed for the cardiothoracic transplant anesthesiologist. Strategies to expand the availability of donor organs were highlighted, including improved donor management, accumulating experience with increased-risk donors, ex vivo perfusion techniques, and donation after cardiac death. A number of reports examined posttransplant outcomes, including outcomes other than mortality, with new data-driven risk models.

Protein Quality Control in the Endoplasmic Reticulum.

The site of protein folding and maturation for the majority of proteins that are secreted, localized to the plasma membrane or targeted to endomembrane compartments is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It is essential that proteins targeted to the ER are properly folded in order to carry out their function, as well as maintain protein homeostasis, as accumulation of misfolded proteins could lead to the formation of cytotoxic aggregates. Because protein folding is an error-prone process, the ER contains protein quality control networks that act to optimize proper folding and trafficking of client proteins.

Metastatic testicular Sertoli cell tumor in a free-ranging cryptorchid adult spotted seal Phoca largha in North Slope, Alaska, USA.

This case describes a metastatic Sertoli cell tumor (SCT) with lymphatic spread to the abdominal and thoracic lymph nodes, pancreas, and adrenal gland in an adult spotted seal Phoca largha. The neoplasm was composed of tubules lined by palisading neoplastic cells separated by a variably dense fibrous stroma. This pinniped was 1 of 2 cryptorchid seals and the sole case of genital neoplasia among 70 ice seals necropsied by the North Slope Borough from 2012 to 2017.

Modulation of TARP 8-Containing AMPA Receptors as a Novel Therapeutic Approach for Chronic Pain.

Nonselective glutamate -amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonists are efficacious in chronic pain but have significant tolerability issues, likely arising from the ubiquitous expression of AMPA receptors in the central nervous system (CNS). Recently, LY3130481 has been shown to selectively block AMPA receptors coassembled with the auxiliary protein, transmembrane AMPA receptor regulatory protein (TARP) 8, which is highly expressed in the hippocampus but also in pain pathways, including anterior cingulate (ACC) and somatosensory cortices and the spinal cord, suggesting that selective blockade of 8/AMPA receptors may suppress nociceptive signaling with fewer CNS side effects. The potency of LY3130481 on recombinant 8-containing AMPA receptors was modulated by coexpression with other TARPs; 2 subunits affected activity more than 3 subunits.

Connectivity explains local ant community structure in a Neotropical forest canopy: a large-scale experimental approach.

Understanding how habitat structure and resource availability affect local species distributions is a key goal of community ecology. Where habitats occur as a mosaic, variation in connectivity among patches influences both local species richness and composition, and connectivity is a key conservation concern in fragmented landscapes. Similarly, availability of limiting resources frequently determines species coexistence or exclusion.

Nematodes in a polar desert reveal the relative role of biotic interactions in the coexistence of soil animals.

Abiotic factors are major determinants of soil animal distributions and their dominant role is pronounced in extreme ecosystems, with biotic interactions seemingly playing a minor role. We modelled co-occurrence and distribution of the three nematode species that dominate the soil food web of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (Antarctica). Abiotic factors, other biotic groups, and autocorrelation all contributed to structuring nematode species distributions.

Biotic interactions are an unexpected yet critical control on the complexity of an abiotically driven polar ecosystem.

Abiotic and biotic factors control ecosystem biodiversity, but their relative contributions remain unclear. The ultraoligotrophic ecosystem of the Antarctic Dry Valleys, a simple yet highly heterogeneous ecosystem, is a natural laboratory well-suited for resolving the abiotic and biotic controls of community structure. We undertook a multidisciplinary investigation to capture ecologically relevant biotic and abiotic attributes of more than 500 sites in the Dry Valleys, encompassing observed landscape heterogeneities across more than 200 km.

Is a Picture Worth a Thousand Words? Effectiveness of iPad Technology in Preclinical Dental Laboratory Courses.

Dental educators should consider alternative modalities of instruction when experiencing difficulties conveying feedback to students. The aim of this study was to determine if integrating iPad technology as a visual learning tool would enhance the exchange of assessment information and improve academic performance in Indiana University School of Dentistry's preclinical curriculum. In 2016, the first-year Tooth Morphology (TM) and second-year Fixed Prosthodontics (Fixed) courses implemented a project using iPad images that allowed instructors to annotate acceptable and deficient areas of students' tooth wax-ups and preparations.

A Retrospective Study of Intentional Body Dismemberment in New York City: 1996-2017.

A review of New York City dismemberment cases occurring between 1996 and 2017 was conducted, which resulted in a total of 55 dismembered decedents in a 22-year period. Annual trends indicate an average of 2.5 dismembered decedents.

Associations between attention deficit hyperactivity and internet gaming disorder symptoms: Is there consistency across types of symptoms, gender and countries?

Background: Videogame addiction has been suggested as a tentative disorder in 2013 by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and was recently officially recognized as a mental health disorder by the World Health Organization (WHO). Although a few studies have identified attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a key risk factor for Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), the interplay between ADHD and IGD symptoms with gender differences across cultures remains to be further examined.

Objective: This study examined the moderating effects of gender in the association between ADHD and IGD across two nations.

Methods: Patients with trastuzumab-pretreated, HER2+ breast cancer brain metastasis without prior therapy with a mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor were eligible.

The Influence of Upper and Lower Extremity Strength on Performance-Based Sarcopenia Assessment Tests.

The optimal management of sarcopenia requires appropriate endpoint measures to determine intervention efficacy. While hand grip strength is a predictor of morbidity and mortality, lower extremity strength may be better associated with functional activities in comparison to hand grip strength. The purpose of our study was to examine the comparative association of upper and lower extremity strength with common measures of physical performance in older adults.

Skin shop: A new model for high-volume skin cancer care.

Introduction: Non-melanoma skin cancer incidence is increasing in New Zealand. Increased cost of care has led to service pressure and a review of models of care. A high-volume skin surgery service at Waikato Hospital has been developed to reduce service costs.
