Analyzing the Photoprotection Efficiency of Sunscreens Containing Antioxidants under Disinfection Conditions.

Sunscreens ensure thorough protection against sunburn. The delivery of UV filters into the stratum corneum and viable epidermis could be reduced by the use of antioxidants (such as β-carotene and trans-resveratrol, alone or combined). The presence/absence of antioxidants (trans-resveratrol and β-carotene) in formulations containing benzophenone-3 (UV-filter) and their efficiency under disinfection and neutral conditions are studied and compared.

Aging interventions will be ineffective if we do not understand the basic principles of aging. Currently, there is no consensus on the issue whether aging is programmed or not. The hypothesis presented in this article indicates that aging (at least graying of male hairs) is programmed.

Development of High-Throughput Methods for Sodium-Ion Battery Cathodes.

Combinatorial synthesis of Li-ion batteries has proven extremely powerful in screening complex compositional spaces for next-generation materials. To date, no Na-ion counterpart exists wherein Na-ion cathodes can be synthesized in such a way to be comparable to that obtained in bulk synthesis. Herein, we develop a synthesis route wherein hundreds of milligram-scale powder samples can be made in a total time of 3 days.

Carbon-14 content in surface soils near atmospheric and below ground nuclear detonations.

Global and regional releases of C have resulted from nuclear weapons testing activities; assessment of the chemical behavior and mechanisms of environmental transport and deposition of this radionuclide can assist remediation strategy development efforts and provide insights into global carbon cycling processes. This work reports a systematic evaluation of C in surface soils taken from the Nevada National Security Site. Surface soil samples are derived from above- and underground test locations, with underground test sites representing a range from near complete containment to uncontrolled radioactive releases.

A comparative study of I content in environmental standard materials IAEA-375, NIST SRM 4354 and NIST SRM 4357 by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry.

Iodine environmental measurements have consistently been validated in the literature using the standard material IAEA-375, soil collected approximately 160 miles northeast of Chernobyl, which is currently the only soil/sediment material with a certified I activity. IAEA-375 has not been available for purchase since approximately 2010. Two other standard materials that are available (NIST SRM 4354, freshwater lake sediment and NIST SRM 4357, ocean sediment) have certified activities for a variety of radionuclides but not for I.

Fixed, low radiant exposure vs. incremental radiant exposure approach for diode laser hair reduction: a randomized, split axilla, comparative single-blinded trial.

Background: Diode lasers are the most commonly used treatment modalities for unwanted hair reduction. Only a few controlled clinical trials but not a single randomized controlled trial (RCT) compared the impact of various laser parameters, especially radiant exposure, onto efficacy, tolerability and safety of laser hair reduction.

Objective: To compare the safety, tolerability and mid-term efficacy of fixed, low and incremental radiant exposures of diode lasers (800 nm) for axillary hair removal, we conducted an intrapatient, left-to-right, patient- and assessor-blinded and controlled trial.

Connubial ecthyma gangrenosum in a healthy couple: a consort counterpart of a "kissing ulcer".

Ecthyma gangrenosum is a relatively rare cutaneous infection generally thought to be linked to sepsis or bacteremia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in severely ill or otherwise immunocompromised patients. Here we report on a healthy middle-aged couple with a typical ecthyma gangrenosum lesion on their thighs, obviously caused by spreading through intimate contact between two skin surfaces: a sort of "consort kissing ulcer." Although they declined to allow microbiological sampling, the lesions gradually but completely regressed with oral ciprofloxacin treatment, leaving atrophic scars.

Port wine stain (PWS, nevus flammeus) is a relatively common vascular malformation of postcapillary venules affecting 0.3 to 0.5% of newborn children.

The role of antioxidants in skin cancer prevention and treatment.

Skin cells are constantly exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress from exogenous and endogenous sources. UV radiation is the most important environmental factor in the development of skin cancer and skin aging. The primary products caused by UV exposure are generally direct DNA oxidation or generation of free radicals which form and decompose extremely quickly but can produce effects that can last for hours, days, or even years.

Telangiectasias resistant to sclerotherapy are commonly connected to a perforating vessel.

Leg telangiectasias resistant to repeated courses of sclerotherapy in patients without deep and superficial venous incompetence are not uncommon. Little is known about factors which may underlie the resistance. Among 26 patients with such telangiectasias we found a direct communication of the vessels with deep and saphenous veins in 65% of patients.

The actual role of hyaluronic acid-based and calcium hydroxylapatite soft tissue fillers: a guide for a practicing dermatologist.

Soft tissue fillers (STFs) together with botulinum toxin have profoundly improved our possibilities to rejuvenate the face and other parts of human body. Among many types of STFs currently used for esthetic and medical indications in routine clinical practice dominate hyaluronic acid-based STFs and calcium hydroxylapatite. Collagen fillers (bovine, porcine and human) are gradually leaving the market replaced mostly by hyaluronic acid-based STFs.

Simple external manual manoeuvres to pass the radiofrequency catheter through a bending segment of a saphenous vein.

Smooth passage of a catheter through a varicose saphenous vein during radiofrequency ablation may prove a challenging task. Various types of venous bending in the transverse and sagittal planes and their combinations within the saphenous compartment may be pretty well appreciated by ultrasound examination. Several simple manual manoeuvres like stretching, pushing or lifting along with limb re-positioning may often help the surgeon to advance the catheter through the segments by temporarily changing their special configuration.

It is a common observation that women and men react differently to stress and illness. We questioned 63 consecutive patients with pityriasis rosea and found that the women were overwhelmingly more likely than men to ask to hear unpleasant information before positive information.

Terra firma-forme dermatosis in a child.

We present a case of reticulate hyperpigmented patches symmetrically distributed on the arms of a 13- year-old boy that appeared after a summer seaside vacation. The lesions were easily wiped off with isopropyl alcohol, confirming the diagnosis of terra firma-forme dermatosis. Dermatologists should be aware of this relatively common skin condition.

Contact sensitivity in patients with venous leg ulcers in Serbia: comparison with contact dermatitis patients and relationship to ulcer duration.

Background: Contact hypersensitivity is a common occurrence in patients with chronic venous leg ulcers (CVLU) with allergen profiles depending upon the local treatment policies.

Objective: This study was to determine the frequency of contact sensitivity, prevalence of individual allergens, polyvalent sensitization, and/or their relationship to ulcers duration in the population of CVLU and contact dermatitis patients in Serbia.

Patients: 75 patients with CVLU and 82 patients with clinically suspected contact dermatitis were prospectively included in the study.

Brown bear body mass and growth in northern and southern Europe.

We tested six hypotheses to explain expected geographical differences in body masses of 1,771 brown bears (Ursus arctos) from northern and southern Europe (Sweden and Norway compared with Slovenia and Croatia): Bergmann's rule, the fasting endurance hypothesis, and the dietary meat hypothesis, which predicted larger bears in the north; and hypotheses stressing the role of high primary productivity, high population density, low seasonality, and length of the growing season, which predicted larger bears in the south. Although brown bear populations in North America vary greatly in body mass, we found no significant difference in body mass between the two European populations using a new analytical approach incorporating modeled age-standardized body masses in linear models, when correcting for sex and season. Fungi ingestion as an important factor influencing heavy metal intake in roe deer: evidence from faeces.

In nature, animals have to cope with the fluctuating bioavailable metal pool in their habitat, which results in a seasonal variability of heavy metal levels in the animal body. Indeed, a pronounced summer-autumnal peak of heavy metals in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) kidney was recently found in Slovenia.

Polychlorinated biphenyl residues in foods from a contaminated region of Yugoslavia.

PCB levels in food and the dietary intake of PCBs from food grown in a contaminated region in Bela Krajina (Slovenia, Yugoslavia) are reported. A large variation in the contribution of PCB congeners to total PCB levels in food of animal and leafy vegetable origin was found. Although guidelines for PCB tolerances exist only for food of animal origin, it was estimated that leafy vegetables and unpeeled fruits from the contaminated region present a significant source of human exposure to PCBs.
