Background: While prolonged operative time and increased levels fused have been shown to increase the risk of prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) length-of-stay (LOS), studies are limited in guiding decision-making regarding the need for intensive care postoperatively. This is especially the case among the cohort of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion (PSF); associations between comorbidities and ICU LOS are not well-delineated.

Methods: AIS patients who underwent PSF from January 1st, 2016 to December 1st, 2016 at 101 participating centers were identified using the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Im-provement Project (NSQIP) Pediatric database.

We sought to conduct a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis of post-operative outcomes following TKA with an all-polyethylene tibial (APT) or a metal-backed tibial component (MBT). A systematic review of the literature was conducted to identify all studies comparing APT and MBT for TKA based upon rates of complications, revisions, reoperation, and patient-reported outcomes. Data was pooled and relative risk of each outcome measure at short (< 5 year), mid (5-10 year), and long (> 10 year) follow-up was calculated.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.

Purpose: The impact of neuromuscular disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS) on outcomes following long segment fusion is underreported. This study evaluates the impact of MS on two-year (2Y) postoperative complications and revisions following ≥ 4-level fusion for adult spinal deformity (ASD).

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most common joint arthroplasty procedure and is shown to be a reliable and efficacious way to improve quality of life. Individuals with interatrial wall abnormalities (IAWAs), such as atrial septal defect or patent foramen ovale (PFO), are at increased baseline risk for stroke and overall lifetime morbidity. The purpose of our study was to elucidate the association between IAWAs and perioperative TKA outcomes.

Purpose: This study investigates baseline patient demographics and predictors of vascular injury, blood transfusion, and compartment syndrome in patients with orthopaedic fractures secondary to GSWs at two high-volume Level I trauma centres.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of all GSW-related trauma patients at two Level I trauma centres between July 2019 and September 2021 was conducted. Chi-squared and two-tailed independent t tests were used for data analysis, and logistic regression with odds ratios (OR) determined predictors of primary outcomes.

Background: Isolated, closed, femoral shaft fractures are dangerous injuries that commonly occur in the setting of high energy trauma or among older patients with significant comorbidities. Despite their prevalence, relatively little data exists connecting patient independent risk factors to the time to 30-day mortality, unplanned reoperations and unplanned readmissions in these fractures.

Methods: Using National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database, isolated close femoral shaft fractures were identified using ICD-10 codes.

Objectives: To determine the effect of anti-factor Xa assay dosing of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) on rates of venous thromboembolism (VTE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), bleeding, and mortality among orthopaedic trauma patients.

Data Sources: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Ovid, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), clinicaltrials.gov , and Scopus were systematically searched from inception of the database to 2021.

In the United States, nearly 1.2 million people > 12 years old have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is associated with postoperative complications following orthopedic procedures. Little is known about how asymptomatic HIV (AHIV) patients fare postoperatively.

Prematurity is associated with surgical complications. This study sought to determine the risk of prematurity on 30-day complications, reoperations, and readmissions following ≥7-level PSF for AIS which has not been established. Utilizing the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP)-Pediatric dataset, all AIS patients undergoing ≥7-level PSF from 2012-2016 were identified.

Introduction: Open pelvic fractures (OPFs) are uncommon but potentially lethal traumatic injuries. Often caused by high energy blunt trauma, they can cause severe injury to abdominal and pelvic structures. We sought to conduct a review of the literature in order to ascertain the rates of genitourinary injury and vaginal laceration after OPF and the rates of resulting infection and mortality.

Background: There is limited research regarding the association between the mFI-5 and postoperative complications among adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients.

Methods: Using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) database, patients with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes for > 7-level fusion or < 7-level fusion with International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes for ASD were identified between 2008 and 2016. Univariate analyses with post-hoc Bonferroni correction for demographics and preoperative factors were performed.

Introduction: Osteoporosis affects nearly 200 million individuals worldwide. There are little available data regarding outcomes in patients with osteoporosis who undergo short-segment lumbar fusion for degenerative disk disease (DDD). We sought to identify a relationship between osteoporosis and risk of adverse outcomes in patients with DDD undergoing short-segment lumbar fusion.

Introduction: Due to market expansion of electric-scooter companies, a significant rise of personal e-scooter use in dense, urban communities has been observed. No literature has specifically focused on e-scooter fracture epidemiology and risk factors associated with direct hospital admission. The aims of this study were to evaluate the 1) patterns of e-scooter related orthopaedic fractures 2) risk factors associated with direct hospital admission.

Background: Early year-round training in a single sport has been associated with high rates of overuse injuries. Despite this increasingly well-known risk of early sport specialization, many young athletes elect to specialize in a single sport due to the perception that this practice gives them the best chance of attaining elite athletic status. However, early specialization in women's ice hockey has not previously been shown to be reliably associated with attainment of elite levels of performance.

Introduction: Rotational displaced pelvic ring injuries are associated with internal injuries to both the gastrointestinal and genitourinary viscera and anatomic structures. Vaginal lacerations and open genitourinary-associated injuries are at increased risk of mortality due to sepsis. .

Background: Female athletes have a higher rate of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries than male athletes; however, the role of age in mediating this injury risk has not been explored. The purpose of this study was to characterize the relationship between age and sex in predicting ACL injury in the pediatric population.

Hypothesis: Prepubescent boys are more likely to sustain an ACL injury than prepubescent girls.

We present a 24-year-old male who developed an infected hematoma that resulted in sciatic nerve injury after he underwent an endoscopic sciatic nerve decompression. He underwent urgent hematoma evacuation and cultures speciated as . At 4 months' follow-up, the patient's nerve had improved motor and sensory function.
