Background: Endurance athletes (EA) are an emerging population of focus for cardiovascular health. The oxygen uptake efficiency plateau (OUEP) is the levelling-off period of ratio between oxygen uptake (VO) and ventilation (VE). In the cohort of EA, we externally validated prediction models for OUEP and derived with internal validation a new equation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe ratio of oxygen uptake (VO) to minute ventilation (VE) is described as the oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES). OUES has been suggested as a valuable submaximal cardiorespiratory index; however, its characteristics in endurance athletes remain unknown. In this study, we a) investigated OUES between different time intervals, b) assessed their prediction power for VOpeak, and c) derived new prediction equations for OUES tailored for well-trained individuals.

Its characteristics among endurance athletes (EA) remain understudied. In a cohort of EA, we aimed to (1) investigate the relationship between different methods of calculation of VE/VCO and (2) externally validate prediction equations for VE/VCO.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading causes of death worldwide. CVDs have become the dominant cause of death and have been a significant health challenge since the second half of the 20th century in the Polish population. The aim of our HDMI (hospital diet medical investigation) study was to examine the quality of the hospital diets given to cardiac patients and assess how much they adhere to the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2021 guidelines.

Aim: To assess the diurnal blood pressure profile disturbances in normotensive patients without overt cardiovascular disease and to correlate with early atherosclerotic markers.
Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are ranked as the third cause of mortality among people infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), but the relationship of infection with cardiovascular risk remains disputable. We have focused on the comprehensive use of parameters obtainable during long-term electrocardiographic (ECG) Holter monitoring.
Material And Methods: Heart rate variability and turbulence (HRV and HRT), deceleration/acceleration capacity (DC/AC), corrected QT interval (QTc) and late potential (LP) were used.
Unlabelled: Every year, 3-4 million people become infected with HCV, most of them are asymptomatic. In more than 20-30 years from infection, it leads to 10-20% of patients with cirrhosis, followed by hepatocellular carcinoma. Cardiological complications of the antiviral treatment are relatively rare, but force us to take additional diagnostic or discontinuation of therapy.

Methods: The study included 52 patients who underwent planned or emergency coronary angiography and received contrast agent. Serum levels of markers (NGAL, L-FABP, KIM-1, IL-18) were analyzed in all patients using ELISA tests, at baseline, after 24 and 72 h from angiography.
Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease manifested by progressive fibrosis of many internal organs including the cardiovascular system and development of autonomic disorders with sympathetic predominance. These abnormalities can increase cardiovascular mortality.
Aim: To evaluate heart rate turbulence (HRT) and variability (HRV) parameters (indicator of autonomic imbalance) obtained from 24-hour ECG Holter monitoring, as predictors of the increased cardiovascular risk in patients with scleroderma.
Background: Pharmacotherapy remains the fundamental method of treating heart failure (HF). Treatment of the elderly is less based on the principles of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and doses do not reach the prescribed value.
Objectives: The aim of the study was to identify any distinct treatment of HF in the elderly compared to those under 65 years of age.
Unlabelled: More than 185 million people around the world have been infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), of whom 350 000 die each year. HCV is a now a curable disease, and advances in HCV therapy have resulted in steadily higher cure rates. Therapies based on PegINF are still treatment of choice.

Unlabelled: Coronary heart disease is now the leading cause of death in the world and in Poland. Every year, the acute coronary syndromes (ACS) falls over a hundred thousand people, of whom the vast majority are treated invasively. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) carries a possible complication.

It leads to endothelial dysfunction, which, apart from erectile dysfunction, accelerates atherosclerosis progression.
Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of testosterone supplementation in men with metabolic syndrome (MS) and TDS on autonomic balance assessed by heart rate variability (HRV) in 24‑hour Holter monitoring.
Unlabelled: Oxidative stress is an important factor of the hyperthyroidism pathogenesis. The radioiodine therapy is an approved treatment method of this common disease and it is connected with exposure to ionizing radiation, which induces increased generation of reactive oxygen species in patient's organism. The aim of the study was to estimate the selected oxidative stress parameters in hyperthyroid patients, initially treated with thiamazole and subsequently with radioiodine.

Liver cirrhosis is associated with hemodynamic and myocardial disturbances termed cirrhotic cardiomyopathy. In the stable stage of liver cirrhosis, systolic and myocardial dysfunction is correlated with brain natriuretic peptide (BNP).

The aim of this study was to assess melatonin efficacy in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). The study included 33 healthy volunteers (who were not treated with melatonin) and 30 patients with MS, who did not respond to 3-month lifestyle modification.

A female patient was taken to the internal ward with a tentative diagnosis of recurrent syncope. Laboratory results disclosed severe hypocalcaemia, hypoparathyroidism, and hypothyroidism.
