Ultrafast atomic vibrations mediate heat transport, serve as fingerprints for chemical bonds and drive phase transitions in condensed matter systems. Light pulses shorter than the atomic oscillation period can not only probe, but even stimulate and control collective excitations. In general, such interactions are performed with free-propagating pulses.

Effective mass equations are the simplest models of carrier states in a semiconductor structures that reduce the complexity of a solid-state system to Schrödinger- or Pauli-like equations resempling those well known from quantum mechanics textbooks. Here we present a systematic derivation of a conduction-band effective mass equation for a self-assembled semiconductor quantum dot in a magnetic field from the 8-band k · p theory. The derivation allows us to classify various forms of the effective mass equations in terms of a hierarchy of approximations.

We study a q-voter model with stochastic driving on a complete graph with q being a random variable described by probability density function P(q), instead of a constant value. We investigate two types of P(q): (1) artificial with the fixed expected value 〈q〉, but a changing variance and (2) empirical of freely forming groups in informal places. We investigate also two types of stochasticity that can be interpreted as different kinds of nonconformity (anticonformity or independence) to answer the question about differences observed at the macroscopic level between these two types of nonconformity in real social systems.
