Methods: A 35-part questionnaire was designed and distributed to clinicians in Ireland.
A 20-month-old girl presented with severe dilated cardiomyopathy and decompensated congestive cardiac failure. Despite escalating inotropic and mechanical ventilation support, she required placement on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and transfer to the transplant centre in Newcastle, England. She was placed on biventricular assist device and then Berlin Heart but failed to show any recovery of ventricular function.

The process is not without any risks, as it is often linked with a significantly progressive deterioration in adolescents' health and loss of follow-up. In fact, transition patients often encounter troubles in finding a care giver who is comfortable managing their condition, or in re-establishing trust with the new care provider.

Methods: Retrospective review of all patients from February 2008 to January 2019.
Results: Thirty-seven children were diagnosed at a median age of 4.
Infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at an increased risk of developing necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), a serious inflammatory intestinal condition classically associated with prematurity. CHD not only increases the risk of NEC in preterm infants but is one of the most commonly implicated risk factors in term infants. Existing knowledge on the topic is limited largely to retrospective studies.

CP is an umbrella term for a heterogenous condition and is, therefore, descriptive rather than a diagnosis. Each case requires detailed consideration of etiology.

Methods: A mixed-methods study of transfer of technical and interpretive skill application amongst postgraduate trainees.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a global pandemic which has affected patients and healthcare systems around the world. Patients with underlying health conditions seem to be more severely affected. There are limited reports of patients with univentricular circulations and COVID 19; thus, we report a case of COVID-19 in a patient with a univentricular circulation.

Methods: We retrospectively studied 48 HLHS patients from the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, (median age, 2.
Background: Assessment of pulmonary hemodynamics is critical in the diagnosis and management of cardiopulmonary disease of premature infants, but reliable noninvasive indices of pulmonary hemodynamics in preterm infants are lacking. Because pulmonary artery acceleration time (PAAT) is a validated noninvasive method to assess right ventricular (RV) afterload in infants and children, the aim of this study was to investigate the maturational changes of PAAT measures in preterm infants over the first year of age and to discern the impact of typical cardiopulmonary abnormalities on these measures.
Methods: In a prospective multicenter study of 239 preterm infants (<29 weeks at birth), PAAT was assessed at days 1, 2, and 5 to 7, at 32 and 36 weeks' postmenstrual age, and at 1-year corrected age.

Background: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) carries a high mortality. The prognostic value of echocardiographic variables at presentation and the importance of serial data are poorly explored.
Methods And Results: We retrospectively analyzed longitudinal clinical and echocardiographic parameters of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
Objectives: This study aimed to report our national experience with transcatheter patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion in infants weighing <6 kg.
Background: The technique of transcatheter PDA closure has evolved in the past two decades and is increasingly used in smaller patients but data on safety and efficacy are limited.
Methods: Patients weighing < 6 kg in whom transcatheter PDA occlusion was attempted in 13 tertiary paediatric cardiology units in the United Kingdom and Ireland were retrospectively analyzed to review the outcome and complications.
Background: The aim of this study was to determine the maturational changes in systolic ventricular strain mechanics by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in extremely preterm neonates from birth to 1 year of age and discern the impact of common cardiopulmonary abnormalities on the deformation measures.
Methods: In a prospective multicenter study of 239 extremely preterm infants (<29 weeks gestation at birth), left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) and global longitudinal systolic strain rate (GLSRs), interventricular septal wall (IVS) GLS and GLSRs, right ventricular (RV) free wall longitudinal strain and strain rate, and segmental longitudinal strain in the RV free wall, LV free wall, and IVS were serially measured on days 1, 2, and 5 to 7, at 32 and 36 weeks postmenstrual age, and at 1 year corrected age (CA). Premature infants who developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia or had echocardiographic findings of pulmonary hypertension were analyzed separately.
Introduction: Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) is a useful marker of myocardial performance in preterm infants. We aimed to demonstrate serial changes in TDI velocity in preterm infants <29weeks gestation, to assess the impact of inotropes and a haemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA).
Methods: This was a prospective observational study of preterm infants <29weeks gestation.
Background And Aims: Right ventricular (RV) functional assessment in premature infants includes basal longitudinal strain (RV BLS), RV systolic tissue Doppler velocity (RV s'), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and RV fractional area change (FAC). A hyperdynamic left ventricle (LV) may influence RV measures of displacement (TAPSE) and velocity (RV s') but not measures of relative change of length (RV BLS) or area (FAC). We aimed to explore this hypothesis in preterm infants with a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).

Advances in neonatal cardiac imaging have provided the capability to obtain quantitative information that often supersedes the qualitative information provided by conventional methods. Novel quantitative measures of function include the assessment of the velocity of muscle tissue movement during systole and diastole using tissue Doppler velocity imaging, and evaluation of deformation and rotational characteristics of the myocardium utilizing speckle tracking echocardiography or tissue Doppler-derived strain imaging.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: Right ventricular fractional area change (RV FAC) is a novel non-invasive quantitative measure of RV function. Reference values of RV FAC and RV end systolic and diastolic areas (RVEDA, RVESA) have recently been established in preterm infants, but their role as marker to assess the efficacy of patient management strategies in the first week of life is largely unknown. The aims of this study were to assess the relationship between RV FAC and gestational age/birthweight, assess the RV FAC on day one of age to predict the later evolution of peri/intraventricular haemorrhage (P/IVH), and assess the influence of a persistent patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) on RV FAC during the first week of age.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe changes in tissue Doppler-derived basal longitudinal strain (BLS) and systolic (SRs), early (SRe) and late (SRa) diastolic strain rates in extremely premature infants from birth to 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA).
Methods: Echocardiographic assessments were carried out on days 1, 2, 5-7 and at 36 weeks PMA.
Objectives: To test the hypothesis that a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) severity score (PDAsc) incorporating markers of pulmonary overcirculation and left ventricular (LV) diastolic function can predict chronic lung disease or death before discharge (CLD/death).
Study Design: A multicenter prospective observational study was conducted for infants <29 weeks gestation. An echocardiogram was carried out on day 2 to measure PDA diameter and maximum flow velocity, LV output, diastolic flow in the descending aorta and celiac trunk, and variables of LV function using tissue Doppler imaging.
Little is known about the social support networks of maltreated youth or how youth in foster care may compare with those who remain with their parent(s). Social network characteristics and perceived social support were examined between (1) maltreated and comparison youth, (2) maltreated youth who remained with their biological parent, those with a foster parent, or a those with a kin caregiver, and (3) youth in stable placements and those who have changed placements. Data came from a sample of 454 adolescents (241 boys, 9-13 years old at enrollment) who took part in a longitudinal study of child maltreatment.
