This study presents the files of nine pregnant women with severe neurosurgical diseases (traumatic, vascular, and tumoral) who were treated in the Neurosurgical Clinic, from 1982 to 1988. Conclusions were drawn after a survey according to the optimal therapy applied, to the mother or fetus priority, to the age of patients and to the severity of the neurological impairment. The early intervention of a team including the neurosurgeon, obstetrician and the specialist in the intensive care unit saves one life or both.

Although the need for routine antipyretic therapy in children has often been questioned, there are no data to contra-indicate this. Not all fevers need to be treated but many physicians do so to relieve parental concern. The most commonly used antipyretic drugs are acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), paracetamol (acetaminophen) and dipyrone (metamizol).

Quinolones are a class of antibiotics structurally related to nalidixic acid. They exhibit bactericidal activity primarily by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase. The early quinolones had a limited spectrum of activity, low potency, high frequency of spontaneous bacterial resistance, low serum drug concentrations and short half-lives, which virtually restricted their use to urinary tract infection.

Background: Different empirical approaches to antimicrobial treatment of lung infiltrates in patients with neutropenia were studied within a prospective, randomized multicenter trial.

Methods: Patients with neutropenia with hematologic malignancies and fever of 38.5 degrees C or higher associated with newly diagnosed lung infiltrates were randomized for an initial therapy with acylaminopenicillin plus aminoglycoside (Group A), third-generation cephalosporin plus aminoglycoside (Group B), or the double beta-lactam combination (Group C), each in combination with rifampin.

We used the polymerase chain reaction with degenerate oligonucleotide primers to search for Csk-related kinases. A cDNA coding for a Csk-like protein-tyrosine kinase was cloned from mouse brain and was designated ctk, for csk-type protein-tyrosine kinase. The 1.

Background: Severe infections are the predominant cause of treatment failure in patients with high grade malignant hematological disorders undergoing intensive chemotherapy.

Patients And Methods: In a multicenter trial of the Paul Ehrlich Society (PEG) study group, febrile neutropenic patients with acute leukemias or other high grade hematological malignancies were randomized for a three phase sequential antimicrobial intervention comparing different widely applied regimes for empirical therapy. Patients with clinically documented infections were treated according to a modification depending on the respective source of infection, whereas in patients with microbiologically documented infections, treatment could be adapted to the sesceptibility patterns of detected pathogens.

154 children aged 2 to 12 years with clinical diagnosis of bacterial pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis and--in most of the patients--a positive enzyme immunoassay for group A beta-hemolytic streptococci before therapy were enrolled in this open controlled randomized and multicenter trial. The children received either 8 mg/kg bodyweight cefixime once daily or 20,000 I.E.

Neonatal respiratory tract infections.

Int J Antimicrob Agents

November 1993

Neonatal respiratory tract infections, in particular pneumonia, can be life-threatening. Lower respiratory tract infections may be acquired before, during, or after birth. Upper respiratory tract infections include otitis, sinusitis, rhinitis, laryngitis, tracheitis and bronchitis.

We have generated a novel "receptor tyrosine kinase" by fusing the extracellular and transmembrane domain of the mouse platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) to the cytoplasmic domain of CD4 and coexpressing the construct with the murine cytoplasmic tyrosine protein kinase p56lck. NMuMG cells, which are mouse mammary gland epithelial cells that lack endogenous platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor expression, were stably transfected with both PDGFR-CD4 and p56lck. The PDGFR-CD4 chimeric protein was expressed at the cell surface and formed a complex with p56lck.

In a randomized multicenter study, the efficacy and safety of cefprozil were compared with those of penicillin in the treatment of group A streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis in children. Of the 409 patients enrolled, 323 were evaluable for their clinical and bacteriological responses; of these 323 children, 172 received cefprozil and 151 received penicillin V. The clinical responses in patients treated with cefprozil were significantly better than those in patients who received penicillin (95.

The present paper presents three short clinical observations of patients with cerebral trauma and concussion also showing transient motor deficits of upper limbs but no sensory disorders. The etiopathogenesis of motor brachial deficits is also discussed. The conclusion is that the sudden anterior flexion of the head determines an instantaneous hit of the pyramidal bulbar decussation (the upper part) to the odontoid apophysis or to the anterior margin of the occipital foramen.

The cellular yes (c-yes) gene is a member of the class of proto-oncogenes that encode non-receptor tyrosine protein kinases. In this report we describe the isolation of cDNAs that encode the murine c-yes gene product and analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the murine c-yes cDNA clones. The reading frame encodes a protein of 541 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 60.

Melanoma formation in the teleost Xiphophorus is caused by a dominant genetic locus, Tu. This locus includes the Xmrk oncogene, which encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase. Tumor induction is suppressed in wild-type fish by a tumor suppressor locus, R.

Subacute subdural hematoma.

Rom J Neurol Psychiatry

October 1993

The subacute subdural hematoma (SASDH) is an entity which is still to be analyzed because the attention of the clinicians was directed towards the acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) and to the chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). A series of 69 patients with SASDH was studied outlining the particularities of the affection. A trauma caused the hematoma but it was a milder one.

Clinical two-dimensional (2D) Doppler ultrasound flow velocity measurement is important for determination of arterial wall shear stress, blood-tissue exchange, myocardial and valvular function. Such 2D Doppler flow velocity images are usually displayed in color, superimposed on the gray-scale, cross-section structural images of the tissue. There are several limitations to this technique of flow measurement, some due to the instrumentation and some to the way the measurement is made.

Macrolides are the primary drugs of choice for a number of clinically significant infections in children. The clinical aspects of newer macrolides such as roxithromycin, clarithromycin, dirithromycin, flurithromycin, miocamycin, rokitamycin, azithromycin and RP 59500 are discussed in different pediatric infections including streptococcal infections (e.g.

A research study was conducted in a francophone high school in Northern Ontario to examine students' perceptions of nursing and the influence of these perceptions on nursing as a career choice. All students in grades 11, 12 and 13 were invited to participate. Fifty-eight percent (n = 268) completed the questionnaire.
