Management of the neurosurgical emergencies in pregnancy.

This study presents the files of nine pregnant women with severe neurosurgical diseases (traumatic, vascular, and tumoral) who were treated in the Neurosurgical Clinic, from 1982 to 1988. Conclusions were drawn after a survey according to the optimal therapy applied, to the mother or fetus priority, to the age of patients and to the severity of the neurological impairment. The early intervention of a team including the neurosurgeon, obstetrician and the specialist in the intensive care unit saves one life or both.

Treatment of fever in childhood.

Although the need for routine antipyretic therapy in children has often been questioned, there are no data to contra-indicate this. Not all fevers need to be treated but many physicians do so to relieve parental concern. The most commonly used antipyretic drugs are acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), paracetamol (acetaminophen) and dipyrone (metamizol).

Background: Severe infections are the predominant cause of treatment failure in patients with high grade malignant hematological disorders undergoing intensive chemotherapy.

Patients And Methods: In a multicenter trial of the Paul Ehrlich Society (PEG) study group, febrile neutropenic patients with acute leukemias or other high grade hematological malignancies were randomized for a three phase sequential antimicrobial intervention comparing different widely applied regimes for empirical therapy. Patients with clinically documented infections were treated according to a modification depending on the respective source of infection, whereas in patients with microbiologically documented infections, treatment could be adapted to the sesceptibility patterns of detected pathogens.

We have generated a novel "receptor tyrosine kinase" by fusing the extracellular and transmembrane domain of the mouse platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) to the cytoplasmic domain of CD4 and coexpressing the construct with the murine cytoplasmic tyrosine protein kinase p56lck. NMuMG cells, which are mouse mammary gland epithelial cells that lack endogenous platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor expression, were stably transfected with both PDGFR-CD4 and p56lck. Cefprozil versus penicillin V in treatment of streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis.

Subacute subdural hematoma.

The subacute subdural hematoma (SASDH) is an entity which is still to be analyzed because the attention of the clinicians was directed towards the acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) and to the chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). A series of 69 patients with SASDH was studied outlining the particularities of the affection. A trauma caused the hematoma but it was a milder one.

Cardiovascular flow velocity measurements by 2D Doppler imaging for assessment of vascular function.

Clinical two-dimensional (2D) Doppler ultrasound flow velocity measurement is important for determination of arterial wall shear stress, blood-tissue exchange, myocardial and valvular function. Such 2D Doppler flow velocity images are usually displayed in color, superimposed on the gray-scale, cross-section structural images of the tissue. There are several limitations to this technique of flow measurement, some due to the instrumentation and some to the way the measurement is made.
