Ultrafast and whole-body cooling with total liquid ventilation induces favorable neurological and cardiac outcomes after cardiac arrest in rabbits.

Background: In animal models of cardiac arrest, the benefit afforded by hypothermia is closely linked to the rapidity of the decrease in body temperature after resuscitation. Because total liquid ventilation (TLV) with temperature-controlled perfluorocarbons induces a very rapid and generalized cooling, we aimed to determine whether this could limit the post-cardiac arrest syndrome in a rabbit model. We especially focused on neurological, cardiac, pulmonary, liver and kidney dysfunctions.

Molecular evolution of phosphoprotein phosphatases in Drosophila.

Phosphoprotein phosphatases (PPP), these ancient and important regulatory enzymes are present in all eukaryotic organisms. Based on the genome sequences of 12 Drosophila species we traced the evolution of the PPP catalytic subunits and noted a substantial expansion of the gene family. We concluded that the 18-22 PPP genes of Drosophilidae were generated from a core set of 8 indispensable phosphatases that are present in most of the insects.

The effect of friction on indenter force and pile-up in numerical simulations of bone nanoindentation.

Nanoindentation is a useful technique for probing the mechanical properties of bone, and finite element (FE) modeling of the indentation allows inverse determination of elastoplastic constitutive properties. However, all but one FE study to date have assumed frictionless contact between indenter and bone. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of friction in simulations of bone nanoindentation.

Adverse metabolic phenotype in low-birth-weight lambs and its modification by postnatal nutrition.

Both high and low maternal dietary intakes adversely affect fetal nutrient supply in adolescent sheep pregnancies. Aims were: (a) to assess the impact of prenatal nutrition on pregnancy outcome, offspring growth and offspring glucose metabolism and (b) to determine whether the offspring metabolic phenotype could then be altered by modifying postnatal nutrition. Dams carrying a single fetus were offered either an optimal control (C) intake to maintain adiposity throughout pregnancy, undernourished to maintain weight at conception but deplete maternal reserves (UN), or overnourished to promote rapid maternal growth and adiposity (ON).

Computer models are used in this study to explore the effect of surgical disruption of the rib-vertebrae connections on ligament load-sharing in the thoracic spine.

Effects of altered glucose supply and adiposity on expression of hypothalamic energy balance regulatory genes in late gestation growth restricted ovine fetuses.

Intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR) predisposes obesity in adulthood. This may be due to altered fetal nutrition causing sustained changes within the developing hypothalamic energy balance regulatory system. Using our established ovine model of IUGR, 130-day singleton fetuses (term=147 days) were obtained from growing adolescent mothers on control dietary intake (C), high intake (H) or H with growth hormone administration during either early (H+early GH) or late gestation (H+late GH) (n=6/group).

Uranium (U) internal distribution and involved effects in the bivalve Corbicula fluminea have been studied after direct chronic exposure (90 d, 10 μg.L-1). U distribution was assessed at the subcellular level (Metal Rich Granules -MRG-, pellets and cytosol fractions) in two main organs of the bivalve (gills and visceral mass).

The mechanisms involved in the transition to an epileptic seizure remain unclear. To examine them, we used tissue slices from human subjects with mesial temporal lobe epilepsies. Ictal-like discharges were induced in the subiculum by increasing excitability along with alkalinization or low Mg(2+).

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a highly aggressive skin cancer that frequently harbours Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV) DNA integrated in the genome of the tumor cells. In our study, we elaborate our recent finding that MCV-positive MCC cell lines require the expression of the viral T antigens (TA). Indeed, in a xeno-transplantation model, we prove that TA expression is essential also in an in vivo situation, as knock down of TA leads to tumor regression.

Spectroscopic investigation in the mid- and far-infrared regions of phosphorus fertilizers derived from thermochemically treated sewage sludge ash.

Inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) fertilizers based on phosphates from thermochemically treated sewage sludge ash were analyzed using mid-infrared (mid-IR) and far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy. The different compounds present in the fertilizers were qualitatively determined with the help of recorded reference spectra of pure substances. Differentiation between various phosphates and other compounds such as sulfates, nitrates, and oxides was possible using combined interpretation of the mid-IR and FIR spectra.

A biomechanical investigation of vertebral staples for fusionless scoliosis correction.

Background: Fusionless scoliosis surgery is an early-stage treatment for idiopathic scoliosis which claims potential advantages over current fusion-based surgical procedures. Anterior vertebral stapling using a shape memory alloy staple is one such approach. Despite increasing interest in this technique, little is known about the effects on the spine following insertion, or the mechanism of action of the staple.

Electroclinical features of idiopathic generalized epilepsies in the elderly: a geriatric hospital-based study.

Epilepsy surgery concerns any patient with pharmacoresistant partial epilepsy, responsible for disability. Children and adult patients can be candidates for epilepsy surgery. A presurgical evaluation, adapted to each patient, must identify the most precisely the cortical area, where the seizures originate, using converging data: the clinical and electroencephalographic semiology of the seizures, the structural and sometimes functional brain imagings, and evaluate if the removal of the epileptogenic focus may induce a neurological or cognitive deficit, using neuropsychological tests and sometimes functional brain imagings.

Adiposity and plane of nutrition influence reproductive neuroendocrine and appetite responses to intracerebroventricular insulin and neuropeptide-Y in sheep.

Long-term nutritional background is thought to influence hypothalamic appetite and reproductive neuroendocrine responses to short-term nutritional feedback. In order to investigate this phenomenon, the effects of intracerebroventricular administration of insulin or neuropeptide-Y (NPY) on LH secretion and voluntary food intake (VFI) were examined in sheep that were initially thin and kept on an increasing nutritional plane (INP), or initially fat and kept on a decreasing nutritional plane (DNP), for 10 weeks. Intracerebroventricular insulin stimulated LH secretion and suppressed VFI in INP sheep when initially thin, but not when they became fat, and had no effect on LH in DNP sheep when initially fat, and stimulated LH secretion when they became thin.

Neurological complications after surgery may have fatal consequences for the patient or lead to disability and inability to work. Similar to central nervous complications such as stroke, postoperative visual loss, postoperative cognitive deficit and delirium, peripheral neurological complications following anaesthesia can be decisively influenced or almost avoided by an optimized anaesthesiological management. In the present article typical peripheral neurologic complications which can occur after regional anesthesia, central venous puncture and insertion of arterial or venous cannulas as well as etiology, diagnosis and therapy of peripheral nervous damage are described.

Early influence of prior experience on face perception.

Inferring someone's personality from his or her photograph is a pervasive and automatic behavior that takes place even if no reliable information about one's character can be derived solely from facial features. This illustrates nicely the idea that perception is not a passive process, but rather an active combination of current sensory inputs with endogenous knowledge derived from prior experience. To understand how and when neural responses to faces can be modulated by prior experience, we recorded magneto-encephalographic (MEG) responses to new faces, before and after subjects were exposed for a short period of 15-20 min to an experimentally induced association between a facial feature (inter-eye distance) and a response (personality judgment).
