Recurrence is a well-known feature of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). Compared with other odontogenic cysts, OKC is characterized by an infiltrating growth, aggressive biological behavior, and a greater tendency towards recurrence once removed, particularly when simple enucleation has been carried out. The recurrence rate is largely dependent upon the type of treatment applied; consequently, the planning of management must take into account the possible reasons why the cyst may recur.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the characteristics of oral reactions to injectable soft tissue fillers, focusing on 151 patients, predominantly females averaging 54.9 years old.
  • Most reactions occurred about 20.4 months after injection, often presenting as painless nodules in the lips, with silicone and polymethylmetacrylate being the most common fillers used.
  • Key findings showed differences in reaction patterns based on the type of filler and highlighted the importance for clinicians to recognize these potential reactions when assessing asymptomatic nodules in older female patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Myofibromas (MF) and myofibromatosis (MFT) are rare benign tumors found in the oral and maxillofacial regions, primarily affecting men and presenting as painless nodules.
  • A systematic review of 169 cases revealed that MF typically appears in the gingiva for soft tissue and in the posterior mandible for intra-osseous lesions, with MFT noted for its well-circumscribed spindle cell masses.
  • Surgical excision is the main treatment, and the overall prognosis is favorable, with low rates of recurrence.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological features of metastases in the oral and maxillofacial regions.

Methods: In this retrospective study, biopsy records were obtained from referral centers for oral and maxillofacial diagnosis in Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, and South Africa.

Results: A total of 120 cases were evaluated.

Background: Subgemmal neurogenous plaques (SNP) are composed of neural structures found in the posterolateral portion of the tongue, rarely biopsied as most of them are asymptomatic or eventually only clinically managed. We aimed to investigate a case series of possible correlation of symptomatic subgemmal neurogenous plaque (SNP) with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Methods: Eleven formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded cases from patients with previous confirmed COVID-19 (by RT-PCR) were retrieved from two pathology files.

This systematic review aimed to incorporate published information about synchronous odontogenic tumors (SOTs) with an analysis of the demographic and clinical characteristics from the cases published in the literature. Case reports and case series of SOT were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed.

Background: Primordial odontogenic tumour is a benign mixed neoplasm of recent description, which has histological similarities with other odontogenic tumours such as the ameloblastic fibroma. In this article, we investigate the architecture of the sub-epithelial layer of mesenchymal cells expressing the marker CD34 in primordial odontogenic tumour.

Objective: Analyse the spatial patterns of CD34 expression in primordial odontogenic tumour and compare them with those in ameloblastic fibroma and the normal tooth germ by means of objective imaging approaches, to better characterise these lesions.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is primarily seen in older patients, but recent studies indicate a rise in cases among younger individuals (under 40 years).
  • A study analyzed 10,727 OSCC cases from 1998 to 2018 across different regions, identifying 626 cases in young patients, with the highest prevalence in Manipal, India.
  • No significant increase in OSCC cases among young patients was found overall, with some regions like Hong Kong showing a decreasing trend, and most young cases presented with risk habits, particularly males affected at the tongue and floor of the mouth.

Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, can lead to a variety of symptoms, including fever, cough, and unique oral lesions, highlighting the need for early diagnosis.
  • A study examined 14 patients with oral lesions, aged 23 to 88, all confirmed to have COVID-19, with symptoms like dysgeusia and anosmia.
  • These lesions were classified into two types: ischemic/hemorrhagic and inflammatory, primarily affecting the palate and tongue, with evidence of viral presence in oral tissues.

Background: Hybrid odontogenic lesions combine histopathological characteristics of two or more odontogenic cysts and/or tumours. The aim of this study was to evaluate the available data on hybrid odontogenic lesions (HOL) and to analyse their epidemiological/clinical features and biological behaviour.

Methods: An electronic search was done in January 2021 using multiple databases.

Article Synopsis
  • Actinic prurigo (AP) is a skin disorder that mainly affects mestizos in Latin America, characterized by specific histological features, including inflammation and lymphoid follicles.
  • Toluidine blue is a dye used to target and stain acidic tissue components like DNA and RNA, which can help in identifying areas rich in lymphoid follicles during biopsies in AP cheilitis cases.
  • The study found that toluidine blue staining was effective, showing positive results in 85% of AP cheilitis patients, and suggests using this method to enhance biopsy accuracy and diagnosis.

  • * LCH typically affects bones (especially the jaw) and skin, with jawbone involvement in 20%-30% of cases, presenting as lesions that affect the posterior mandible and can also involve oral soft tissues.
  • * Managing LCH is complex and requires collaboration among various specialists, with dentists being crucial since oral signs may be the first indicators of the disease.

Objective: The aim of this study is to present and discuss the salient clinicopathological features, differential diagnosis and epithelial immunohistochemical profile of three additional cases of peripheral odontogenic keratocyst (POKC) and to present a review of the literature. POKC is a locally aggressive odontogenic lesion. The peripheral variant of the odontogenic keratocyst is rare and more frequently located in anterior gingiva.

  • Salivary gland tumors are rare and varied, making up about 3-6% of head and neck tumors, with a focus on cases diagnosed in Mexico between 2000 and 2019.
  • Out of 164 cases studied, 67.1% were benign, with pleomorphic adenoma being the most common tumor, while mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common malignant tumor found.
  • The study found a higher prevalence in females, primarily affecting minor salivary glands, particularly in the palate.
