The biological sex estimation of human individuals can be achieved by extracting fragments of the amelogenin protein from small areas of tooth enamel. The amelogenin gene can be found on both sex chromosomes (X and Y) with chromosome-specific differences in its sequence, and consequently the sequences of the expressed protein in teeth. Virtually all current analytical techniques used to identify the occurrence of the male Y chromosome-specific proteoform employ proteoform-specific peptide analysis by LC-ESI MS/MS, which typically results in longer analytical times due to the LC separation step, despite recent efforts of shortening the LC step.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA liquid atmospheric pressure-matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (LAP-MALDI) method has been developed and applied to a commercial AP-MALDI source on a hybrid orbitrap mass analyzer. It is shown that electrospray ionization (ESI)-like mass spectra of a range of peptides and proteins can be acquired by LAP-MALDI mass spectrometry (MS) as previously demonstrated on a homemade LAP-MALDI-Q-TOF setup but without the need of any modification to the commercially available MS equipment used. Multiply charged peptide ions were recorded with a resolution of around 100,000 and a mass accuracy of less than 5 ppm.

After an intrathecal baclofen pump malfunction with meningitis and medication withdrawal, a 17-year-old adolescent with quadriparetic cerebral palsy and paroxysmal autonomic instability experienced relief of refractory pain and dystonia with an in-home intravenous dexmedetomidine infusion. His interdisciplinary care team collaborated to establish safety measures and adjust his home medication regimen to further improve quality of life well before his end of life.

Background: Education and training may improve outcomes within an experienced vascular access team.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of a standardized peripheral intravenous catheter insertion educational program (Operation STICK) on vascular access outcomes.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study design was used.
Background: Women's health and well-being (WHW) have been receiving growing attention, but limited progress has been made on how to measure its different domains in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We used data from five long-term birth cohorts in Brazil, Guatemala, the Philippines and South Africa to explore different domains of adult WHW, and how these domains relate to early life exposures.
Methods: Based upon an a priori conceptualisation of eight postulated WHW outcomes available in the data, we grouped them as follows: human capital (intelligence quotient, schooling, height, and teenage childbearing), metabolic health (body mass index and metabolic syndrome score), and psychological (happiness and Self-Reported Questionnaire (SRQ) scores).
Imaging with multiple modalities can maximise the information gained from the analysis of a single sample. probes for optical fluorescence and X-ray fluorescence microscopy based on brominated 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide and BODIPY scaffolds have been successfully designed and synthesised. Herein we show that these prototype probes, based on each of these scaffolds, can be imaged in two different cancer cell lines, and that the respective optical fluorescence and X-ray fluorescence signals are well correlated in these images.

Objectives: We estimated the association of UPF intake across adolescence with sociodemographic characteristics and maternal UPF intake in a Filipino cohort.
Methods: Data were from 4 waves (1994-2005) of the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (n = 2068); participants were aged 11, 15, 18, and 21 y.
Most health care providers in Lagos State, Nigeria are private and are not required to offer breastfeeding counseling to women. From May 2019-April 2020, Alive & Thrive implemented a multicomponent breastfeeding promotion intervention in private health facilities in Lagos that included training and support to implement the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative and provide breastfeeding counseling and support to pregnant women and lactating mothers in person and on WhatsApp. We conducted a mixed methods process evaluation in 10 intervention and 10 comparison private health facilities to examine the feasibility and acceptability of integrating the intervention into routine health services.

Objectives: To examine how population-level health and sustainability of diet as measured by the PHDI changed from 2003 to 2018, and to assess how PHDI correlated with inadequacy for nutrients of public health concern (iron, calcium, potassium, and fiber) in the United States.
Methods: We estimated survey-weighted trends in PHDI scores and median intake of PHDI components in a nationally representative sample of 33,859 adults aged 20+ y from 8 cycles (2003-2018) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with 2 d of dietary recall data.

A pervasive problem in MS/MS analyses, especially for top-down proteomics, is the occurrence of chimeric spectra, when two or more precursor ions are co-isolated and fragmented, thus leading to complex MS/MS spectra that are populated with fragment ions originating from different precursor ions. This type of convoluted data typically results in low sequence database search scores due to the vast number of mixed-source fragment ions, of which only a fraction originates from a specific precursor ion.
