Marinobufagenin (MBG) is implicated in chronic kidney disease, where it removes Fli1-induced inhibition of the collagen-1. We hypothesized that (i) in nephrectomized rats, aortic fibrosis develops due to elevated plasma MBG and inhibited Fli1, and (ii) that the antibody to MBG reduces collagen-1 and improves vasodilatation. A partial nephrectomy was performed in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

This review assessed the efficacy and safety of pharmacologic agents (prostaglandins, oxytocin, mifepristone, hyaluronidase, and nitric oxide donors) and mechanical methods (single- and double-balloon catheters, laminaria, membrane stripping, and amniotomy) and those generally considered under the rubric of complementary medicine (castor oil, nipple stimulation, sexual intercourse, herbal medicine, and acupuncture). A substantial body of published reports, including 2 large network meta-analyses, support the safety and efficacy of misoprostol (PGE1) when used for cervical ripening and labor induction. Misoprostol administered vaginally at doses of 50 μg has the highest probability of achieving vaginal delivery within 24 hours.

Multichannel uterine electromyography (uEMG) during pregnancy is traditionally performed with electrocardiography (ECG) sensors. Similar signals are often observed in two or more channels, suggesting the ECG sensors report activities originating from the same location on the uterus. To improve signal source localization, we designed a directional sensor or "Area Sensor".

Low quality of life in binge eating disorder compared to healthy controls.

Introduction: Patients with binge eating disorder (BED) tend to report a lower quality of life (QoL) than patients with other eating disorders. However, most research on QoL in eating disorders include generic rather than disease-specific measures. Depression and obesity are frequent comorbid conditions in patients with BED affecting QoL.

Women experiencing homelessness and mental illness in a Housing First multi-site trial: Looking beyond housing to social outcomes and well-being.

Objective: There is scant research on the effectiveness of permanent supportive housing for homeless women with mental illness. This study examines the effectiveness of Housing First with an unprecedentedly large sample of homeless women from five Canadian cities, and explore baseline risk factors that predict social, health and well-being outcomes over a 24 month-period.

Methods: The At Home/Chez Soi multi-site randomized controlled Housing First trial recruited over 600 women between October 2009 and July 2011.

Background: The standard hospital gown has remained relatively unchanged despite reports that it is uncomfortable, embarrassing to wear and compromises patients' dignity. Canrenone Restores Vasorelaxation Impaired by Marinobufagenin in Human Preeclampsia.

Previous studies implicated cardiotonic steroids, including Na/K-ATPase inhibitor marinobufagenin (MBG), in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia (PE). Recently, we demonstrated that (i) MBG induces fibrosis in rat tissues via a mechanism involving Fli1, a negative regulator of collagen-1 synthesis, and (ii) MBG sensitive Na/K-ATPase inhibition is reversed by mineralocorticoid antagonists. We hypothesized that in human PE elevated MBG level is associated with the development of fibrosis of the umbilical arteries and that this fibrosis can be attenuated by canrenone.

The Efficacy of Intra-articular Subtalar Steroid Injection for Symptomatic Talocalcaneal Coalitions: A 30-Year Single Institution Experience.

Purpose: While intra-articular steroid injection has been used anecdotally in patients with symptomatic talocalcaneal coalitions recalcitrant to traditional conservative modalities, the ability of this treatment to provide symptomatic relief and obviate or delay surgical intervention remains unknown. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to assess the treatment efficacy of intra-articular subtalar steroid injection in children with symptomatic talocalcaneal coalitions.

Methods: A retrospective study of all patients with isolated subtalar coalitions was performed at a single pediatric orthopaedic institution over a 30-year period.

Validating the Danish version of the Eating Disorder Quality of Life Scale (EDQLS) in anorexia nervosa.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the factor structure of the Danish translation of the eating disorder quality of life scale and evaluate the internal reliability and convergent validity of the scale in a Danish cohort of women with AN.

Methods: The total sample comprised 211 patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa age 13-40 years. Patients completed questionnaires assessing eating disorder psychopathology, physical and social functioning, and well-being.

Priority Given to Technology in Government-Based Mental Health and Addictions Vision and Strategy Documents: Systematic Policy Review.

Background: The use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to deliver mental health and addictions (MHA) services is a global priority, especially considering the urgent shift towards virtual delivery of care in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to monitor the evolving role of technology in MHA services. Given that MHA policy documents represent the highest level of priorities for a government's vision and strategy for mental health care, one starting point is to measure the frequency with which technology is mentioned and the terms used to describe its use in MHA policy documents (before, during, and after COVID-19).

Explanatory Factors for Disease-Specific Health-Related Quality of Life in Women with Anorexia Nervosa.

A better understanding of explanatory factors for disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in anorexia nervosa (AN) could help direct treatment providers to aspects of the most relevance for patient wellbeing and recovery. We aimed to investigate whether factors associated with HRQoL are the same for women with AN and normal-weight controls. The participants in this study were women with AN recruited from specialized eating disorder centers in Denmark and healthy, normal-weight controls invited via online social media.

In this review, we present a new theory of the etiology and pathogenesis of preeclampsia that is based on the interaction of Na/K-ATPase and its endogenous ligands including marinobufagenin. The signaling pathway of marinobufagenin involves an inhibition of transcriptional factor Fli1, a negative regulator of collagen synthesis, followed by the deposition of collagen in the vascular tissues and altered vascular functions.

Clinical Practice Guidelines on Ordering Echocardiography Before Hip Fracture Repair Perform Differently from One Another.

Background: Osteoporotic hip fractures typically occur in frail elderly patients with multiple comorbidities, and repair of the fracture within 48 h is recommended. Pre-operative evaluation sometimes involves transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) to screen for heart disease that would alter peri-operative management, yet TTE can delay surgery and is resource intensive. Evidence suggests that the use of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) can improve care.

Competitive figure skaters often suffer from overuse injuries, which may be due to the high impact forces endured during jump repetitions performed in practice and competition. Social-psychological determinants of farmer intention to adopt nutrient best management practices: Implications for resilient adaptation to climate change.

Successful adaptation to global climate change and enhancement of agricultural watersheds' resilience requires widespread use of Nutrient Best Management Practices (NBMPs) by farms of all sizes. In the US, adoption of many NBMP practices is voluntary and insufficient to achieve local and downstream conservation objectives. Despite evidence that both social-psychological factors and socio-economic factors influence farmer decision-making, very few studies of farmers' decision-making related to NBMP adoption combine these two factor groups in a theoretically rigorous way.

Effectiveness of Housing First for Homeless Adults with Mental Illness Who Frequently Use Emergency Departments in a Multisite Randomized Controlled Trial.

Frequent emergency department (ED) users experiencing homelessness are associated with high costs for healthcare systems yet interventions for this group have been minimally investigated. This study used 24-month data from a multisite randomized controlled trial of Housing First (HF) to examine how effective the intervention is in helping frequent ED users with a mental illness to achieve housing stability, improve behavioural health and functioning, and reduce their ED use. Findings showed that HF is effective in stably housing frequent ED users despite their complex health needs.

New therapy of preeclampsia includes modulation of the Na/K-ATPase system by immunoneutralization of the marinobufagenin and use of mineralocorticoid antagonists which are capable to impair marinobufagenin-Na/K-ATPase interactions.

Efficacy, Outcomes, and Alignment Following Isolated Fibular Sesamoidectomy via a Plantar Approach.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate patients for intermediate-term pain relief, functional outcome, and changes in hallux alignment following isolated, complete fibular sesamoidectomy via a plantar approach for sesamoid-related pain recalcitrant to conservative treatment.

Methods: A retrospective query of a tertiary referral center administrative database was performed using the Current Procedural Terminology code 28135 for sesamoidectomy between 2005 and 2016. Patients who underwent an isolated fibular sesamoidectomy were identified and contacted to return for an office visit.

Cost-effectiveness of Housing First Intervention With Intensive Case Management Compared With Treatment as Usual for Homeless Adults With Mental Illness: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: In the At Home/Chez Soi trial for homeless individuals with mental illness, the scattered-site Housing First (HF) with Intensive Case Management (ICM) intervention proved more effective than treatment as usual (TAU).

Objective: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the HF plus ICM intervention compared with TAU.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This is an economic evaluation study of data from the At Home/Chez Soi randomized clinical trial.
