Purpose Of Review: As advances in antiretroviral therapy for people with HIV (PWH) have prolonged lifespans, prevalence of aging and obesity related metabolic disorders have increased. The purpose of this review is to summarize recent research assessing sex differences in metabolic disorders among PWH, including weight gain/obesity, steatotic liver disease, insulin resistance/diabetes, dyslipidemia, bone loss/osteoporosis, and sarcopenia.

Recent Findings: A growing body of evidence shows that women with HIV are at increased risk of developing metabolic disorders compared to men, including body weight gain and obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, bone loss, and sarcopenia, while men with HIV are at higher risk for hepatosteatosis and hepatic fibrosis.

Background: There is increasing evidence of an association between early term birth and adverse neonatal outcomes. However, there is a paucity of data on the true neonatal outcomes following term deliveries in lower-income countries, including Nigeria.

Objectives: This study compared the neonatal outcomes of early and late-term deliveries in a tertiary hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.

Background: There is conflicting evidence regarding the survival benefit of interval debulking surgery (IDS) compared to conventional treatment with primary debulking surgery (PDS) in women with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC).

Objectives: We compared the survivals following PDS followed by adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) versus IDS after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in women with advanced EOC at the gynaecological oncology unit of a tertiary referral centre in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

Methods: The data of 126 women with advanced EOC who had standard treatment with either PDS and ACT or NACT and IDS between January 2008 and December 2017 were analyzed.

Purpose: This study investigated the prognostic performance of the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of the data of 91 women who had treatment for EOC between 2009 and 2018. The associations between pretreatment SII and survivals were tested.

Women who had never undergone cervical screening (CS) or who have infrequent CS are at increased risk of having cervical epithelial cell abnormalities (CECA) that may lead to cervical cancer (CCa). Our study determined the pattern and factors that predict the occurrence of CECA among unscreened and under-screened women in Lagos, Nigeria. This was an analytical cross-sectional study among 256 consenting sexually active women between 21 and 65 years who attended a community CS programme in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria, in June 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers compared the plasma D-dimer levels of 65 women with cervical cancer to an equal number of cancer-free women, finding a significant difference in levels between the two groups.
  • * A cutoff value of 543 ng/mL for D-dimer was identified to help differentiate cervical cancer patients from healthy individuals, and higher D-dimer levels were associated with more advanced stages and grades of CC.

Introduction: As it may not be feasible to provide cervical cancer screening services to all HIV-infected women in most resource-limited settings, there is a need to identify those who are most at risk. We determined the prevalence, patterns, and associated factors of cervical cytological abnormalities among HIV-infected women in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among HIV-infected women at the adult HIV treatment and colposcopy clinics of a university teaching hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, between October 2018 and December 2019.

Background: The study determined the pattern and distribution of gynaecological cancer cases seen at a university teaching hospital in southwest Nigeria over a 5-year period.

Methodology: It was a 5-year retrospective review of all gynaecological cancer cases seen and managed at the hospital from 1 September 2013 to 31 August 2018.

Results: A total of 6247 gynaecological admissions and 902 gynaecological cancers were seen in the hospital during the study period accounting for a proportion of 14.

Background: To improve the overall survival of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients, a more precise risk identification after completion of standard treatment will enhance patients' follow-up surveillance and the use of individualized targeted therapy.

Aim: This study explored the potential risk predictors of early mortality in EOC patients who had standard treatment with debulking surgery and chemotherapy.

Methods: The study included 93 EOC patients who had standard treatment and were followed up between January 2011 and December 2020.

Background Several studies have shown that whether complete tumor resection can be achieved during debulking surgery depends on various patient-related factors. However, none of these studies was conducted among patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) in sub-Saharan Africa. In this study, we aimed to determine the preoperative predictors of optimal tumor resectability (OTR) during primary debulking surgery (PDS) in patients with EOC.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and HPV based cervical screening are scientifically proven ways to prevent and eliminate cervical cancer (CC). Unfortunately, these measures are yet to be widely accepted or utilized. Our study aimed to explore the individual-related factors that predict HPV vaccination and testing, its motivating factors and barriers among urban women in Lagos, Nigeria.

Introduction: Sickle cell disease is the most common monogenetic disorder worldwide. There have been reports of endocrine dysfunction and gonadal failure among affected individuals, especially in males. The findings on ovarian reserve and failure in women with sickle anaemia have been inconsistent.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is the second most common genital cancer worldwide, and the most lethal of all genital cancers. The role of inflammation and markers of systemic inflammation such as neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes in cancer biology have been investigated and reported in many studies. Cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) is currently in use as an adjunct to diagnosis, prognostication and monitoring of epithelial OC (EOC).

Background: Uterine fibroids significantly affect the quality of life of reproductive-age women. The socioeconomic cost and psychological strain on patients cannot be overemphasized. The role of diet and micronutrients on the onset and development of uterine fibroids has come under review in recent times.

Background Inflammation is pathognomonic of all stages of tumor formation, and therefore, there is renewed interest in systemic inflammatory response (SIR) markers including haematological inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as prognostic predictors in several cancers. Aim This study was aimed to investigate the effect of pretreatment peripheral blood NLR on the survival prognosis of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Methods We identified 93 patients with a complete clinical record from a cohort of 155 patients who received treatment for EOC between 2009 and 2018.

Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the clinicopathologic predictors of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) following primary treatment in Lagos, Nigeria.

Materials And Methods: Using data from a retrospective cohort of 126 patients who received treatment for EOC between 2010 and 2018, we identified 83 patients with a complete clinical record for subsequent data analysis. Patients' demographics and updated 2-year follow-up status were abstracted from medical records.

Primary vaginal leiomyosarcoma (VLMS) is an extremely rare variant of primary vaginal cancers with very poor prognosis irrespective of the stage at presentation and the type of treatment received. It is easily recurrent and has a high propensity for haematogenous spread especially to the lungs. We present the case of a 34-year-old Para 1 + 1 (1 alive) woman with recurrent vaginal mass of 8 years duration after two surgical excisions without histological evaluation.
