Background: There is increasing evidence of an association between early term birth and adverse neonatal outcomes. However, there is a paucity of data on the true neonatal outcomes following term deliveries in lower-income countries, including Nigeria.

Objectives: This study compared the neonatal outcomes of early and late-term deliveries in a tertiary hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.

Women who had never undergone cervical screening (CS) or who have infrequent CS are at increased risk of having cervical epithelial cell abnormalities (CECA) that may lead to cervical cancer (CCa). Our study determined the pattern and factors that predict the occurrence of CECA among unscreened and under-screened women in Lagos, Nigeria. This was an analytical cross-sectional study among 256 consenting sexually active women between 21 and 65 years who attended a community CS programme in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria, in June 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers compared the plasma D-dimer levels of 65 women with cervical cancer to an equal number of cancer-free women, finding a significant difference in levels between the two groups.
  • * A cutoff value of 543 ng/mL for D-dimer was identified to help differentiate cervical cancer patients from healthy individuals, and higher D-dimer levels were associated with more advanced stages and grades of CC.

Introduction: As it may not be feasible to provide cervical cancer screening services to all HIV-infected women in most resource-limited settings, there is a need to identify those who are most at risk. We determined the prevalence, patterns, and associated factors of cervical cytological abnormalities among HIV-infected women in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among HIV-infected women at the adult HIV treatment and colposcopy clinics of a university teaching hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, between October 2018 and December 2019.

Background Several studies have shown that whether complete tumor resection can be achieved during debulking surgery depends on various patient-related factors. However, none of these studies was conducted among patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) in sub-Saharan Africa. In this study, we aimed to determine the preoperative predictors of optimal tumor resectability (OTR) during primary debulking surgery (PDS) in patients with EOC.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and HPV based cervical screening are scientifically proven ways to prevent and eliminate cervical cancer (CC). Unfortunately, these measures are yet to be widely accepted or utilized. Our study aimed to explore the individual-related factors that predict HPV vaccination and testing, its motivating factors and barriers among urban women in Lagos, Nigeria.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is the second most common genital cancer worldwide, and the most lethal of all genital cancers. The role of inflammation and markers of systemic inflammation such as neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes in cancer biology have been investigated and reported in many studies. Cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) is currently in use as an adjunct to diagnosis, prognostication and monitoring of epithelial OC (EOC).

Primary vaginal leiomyosarcoma (VLMS) is an extremely rare variant of primary vaginal cancers with very poor prognosis irrespective of the stage at presentation and the type of treatment received. It is easily recurrent and has a high propensity for haematogenous spread especially to the lungs. We present the case of a 34-year-old Para 1 + 1 (1 alive) woman with recurrent vaginal mass of 8 years duration after two surgical excisions without histological evaluation.
