A search for the rare decays B(s)(0) → μ+ μ- and B(0) → μ+ μ- is performed in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.14 fb(-1), collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In both cases, the number of events observed after all selection requirements is consistent with expectations from background and standard-model signal predictions.

Article Synopsis
  • The inclusive jet cross section was measured in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, specifically at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the CMS experiment.
  • The analysis involved a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 34 pb(-1) and focused on jet transverse momenta ranging from 18 to 1100 GeV, with rapidity values below 3.
  • The results indicate that the measured cross section aligns with the highest jet p(T) values recorded, and is consistent with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions, accounting for experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

A search for three-jet hadronic resonance production in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been conducted by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35  pb(-1). Events with high jet multiplicity and a large scalar sum of jet transverse momenta are analyzed using a signature-based approach. The number of expected standard model background events is found to be in good agreement with the observed events.

Fasciola hepatica M17 leucine aminopeptidase (FhLAP) is thought to play a role in catabolizing peptides generated by the concerted activity of gut-associated endopeptidases on host polypeptides, thus releasing amino acids to be used in protein anabolism. In this study, a recombinant functional form of this homo hexameric metallopeptidase produced in Escherichia coli was used in combination with adjuvants of different types in a vaccination trial in Corriedale sheep against experimental challenge with F. hepatica metacercariae.

Electroweak production of the top quark is measured for the first time in pp collisions at √=7  TeV, using a data set collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36  pb⁻¹. With an event selection optimized for t-channel production, two complementary analyses are performed. The first one exploits the special angular properties of the signal, together with background estimates from the data.

Objective: Brief screening tools for dementia for use by non-specialists in primary care have yet to be validated in non-western settings where cultural factors and limited education may complicate the task. We aimed to derive a brief version of cognitive and informant scales from the Community Screening Instrument for Dementia (CSI-D) and to carry out initial assessments of their likely validity.

Methods: We applied Mokken analysis to CSI-D cognitive and informant scale data from 15 022 participants in representative population-based surveys in Latin America, India and China, to identify a subset of items from each that conformed optimally to item response theory scaling principles.

A first measurement of the polarization of W bosons with large transverse momenta in pp collisions is presented. The measurement is based on 36 pb⁻¹ of data recorded at √s = 7 TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC. The left-handed, right-handed, and longitudinal polarization fractions (f(L), f(R), and f₀, respectively) of W bosons with transverse momenta larger than 50 GeV are determined by using decays to both electrons and muons.

  • The study measures the production cross sections of B0 mesons in proton-proton collisions at a collision energy of 7 TeV using data from the CMS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 40 pb-1.
  • B0 mesons are observed through their decay into a specific final state, involving J/ψ and KS0 particles, with further decays into muons and pions.
  • The total production cross section for B0 mesons with transverse momentum greater than 5 GeV and rapidity less than 2.2 is measured to be 33.2 ± 2.5 ± 3.5 μb, factoring in statistical and systematic uncertainties.

A search for neutral minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) Higgs bosons in pp collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36  pb(-1) recorded by the CMS experiment. The search uses decays of the Higgs bosons to tau pairs.

Many factors contribute to the vitality of an individual faculty member, a department, and an entire academic organization. Some of the relationships among these factors are well understood, but many questions remain unanswered. The Joint Task Force on Faculty Workforce examined the literature on faculty workforce issues, including the work of previous task forces charged by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP).

Background: To describe patterns of recent health service utilisation, and consequent out-of-pocket expenses among older people in countries with low and middle incomes, and to assess the equity with which services are accessed and delivered.

Methods: 17,944 people aged 65 years and over were assessed in one-phase population-based cross-sectional surveys in geographically-defined catchment areas in nine countries - urban and rural sites in China, India, Mexico and Peru, urban sites in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, and a rural site in Nigeria. The main outcome was use of community health care services in the past 3 months.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers conducted a search for Z bosons using the μ(+)μ(-) decay channel in lead-lead collisions at high energy levels (√S(NN)=2.76 TeV) with the CMS detector.
  • They identified a total of 39 opposite-sign muon pairs in the invariant mass range of 60-120 GeV/c², leading to a calculated yield per event of approximately [33.8±5.5(stat)±4.4(syst)]×10(-8) in a rapidity range of |y|<2.0.
  • The observed results align with next-to-leading order QCD predictions when adjusted for the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions.

A search for supersymmetry in the context of general gauge-mediated breaking with the lightest neutralino as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and the gravitino as the lightest is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed by using events containing two or more isolated photons, at least one hadronic jet, and significant missing transverse energy.

A search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks is performed in the final state containing two electrons and two jets using proton-proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 33 pb⁻¹ collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the predictions for the standard model background processes, and an upper limit is set on the leptoquark pair production cross section times β² as a function of the leptoquark mass, where β is the branching fraction of the leptoquark decay to an electron and a quark.

Single units of O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), usually components of nuclear and cytoplasmatic proteins, are present at the C-terminal domain of cruzipain (Cz), a lysosomal major antigen from Trypanosoma cruzi. On the other hand, antibodies directed against some self-antigens like myosin are associated with Chagas heart disease. The participation of O-GlcNAc moieties in the molecular antigenicity of Cz was determined using GlcNAc linked to aprotinin by ELISA.
