After oral exposure of cattle with classical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (C-BSE), the infectious agent ascends from the gut to the central nervous system (CNS) primarily via the autonomic nervous system. However, the timeline of this progression has thus far remained widely undetermined. Previous studies were focused on later time points after oral exposure of animals that were already 4 to 6 months old when challenged.

These conditions are conducive to poly-microbial infections, like chronic lung infection, in which Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is the major pathogenic bacterium colonizing CF lungs at the end of the lifetime of CF patients.

Spinal meningeal cyst in a child with Marfan syndrome: A potential cause for apparent dural puncture during caudal epidural block.

We report a complication from caudal epidural block for anesthesia in a 4-year-old child with Marfan syndrome who was undergoing lensectomy, orchidopexy, and circumcision resulting in apparent accidental dural puncture. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lumbosacral spinal meningeal cyst.

In classical bovine spongiform encephalopathy (C-BSE), an orally acquired prion disease of cattle, the ileal Peyer's patch (IPP) represents the main entry port for the BSE agent. In earlier C-BSE pathogenesis studies, cattle at 4-6 months of age were orally challenged, while there are strong indications that the risk of infection is highest in young animals. In the present study, unweaned calves aged 4-6 weeks were orally challenged to determine the earliest time point at which newly formed PrP and BSE infectivity are detectable in the IPP.

Comparison of artesunate-mefloquine and artemether-lumefantrine fixed-dose combinations for treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children younger than 5 years in sub-Saharan Africa: a randomised, multicentre, phase 4 trial.

Background: WHO recommends combinations of an artemisinin derivative plus an antimalarial drug of longer half-life as treatment options for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum infection. In Africa, artemether-lumefantrine is the most widely used artemisinin-based combination therapy, whereas artesunate-mefloquine is used infrequently because of a perceived poor tolerance to mefloquine. WHO recommends reconsideration of the use of artesunate-mefloquine in Africa.

Background: Recently, fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) was discovered in squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the lung with FGFR1 amplification described as a promising predictive marker for anti-FGFR inhibitor treatment. Only few data are available regarding prevalence, prognostic significance and clinico-pathological characteristics of FGFR1-amplified and early-stage non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC). The comprehensive European Air Pollution and Dispersion model system was used to estimate the impacts of the usage of reformulated and alternative fuels on regional air quality with special emphasis on surface ozone concentrations. A severe western European summer smog episode in July 1994 has been used as a reference, and the model predictions have been evaluated for this episode. A forecast simulation for the year 2005 (TREND) has been performed, including the future emission development based on the current legislation and technologies available.

Simultaneous extraction of selected benzodiazepines and benzodiazepine-glucuronides from urine by immunoadsorption.

A rapid and selective cleanup procedure based on immunoadsorption is described for the simultaneous extraction of diazepam and its free or glucuronidated metabolites nordiazepam, temazepam, and oxazepam from urine. The method can also be used for the extraction of lorazepam and lorazepam-glucuronide. Because the samples do not have to be hydrolyzed before extraction, valuable information is preserved.

Ribosomal proteins from Escherichia coli have been isolated by a mild purification procedure. Their tertiary structure has been explored by two techniques, proton magnetic resonance and limited proteolysis. A number of proteins when subjected to limited proteolysis produce resistant fragments in good yields.
