Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a therapeutic option for acute renal failure (ARF) in developing countries, despite concerns about inadequacy. Shorter and more efficient tidal peritoneal dialysis (TPD) was compared with continuous equilibrating peritoneal dialysis (CEPD) therapy in ARF by using their adequacies as accepted standards and analyzing the solute reduction indices (SRI).

Methods: A prospective, randomized crossover trial was performed in patients with mild to moderate hypercatabolic ARF who were assigned to CEPD and TPD therapy after an adequate washout period.

Millions of children are infected by enteroviruses each year, usually exhibiting only mild symptoms. Although enteroviruses are a common cause of community-acquired aseptic meningitis, enteroviral meningitis usually has a benign course. We describe a 14-year-old patient with enteroviral meningoencephalitis diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction.

Most false aneurysms of the heart represent contained ventricular free wall ruptures after myocardial infarction. Post-traumatic aneurysms also may follow penetrating or non-penetrating trauma to the chest. Regardless of the origin of the false aneurysm there is a propensity for aneurysm rupture.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (Esthesioneuroblastoma) is a rare malignant tumour arising from olfactory epithelium. It has a predilection for cervical lymph node metastasis and also has potential for distant metastasis to unusual sites like scalp, face, aorta, spleen, liver, adrenal gland and ovary. We report here a rare case of olfactory neuroblastoma in an adolescent girl with metastatic deposits in the breast.

Anomalous origin of the circumflex coronary artery from the right aortic sinus, with a retroaortic course, is usually without consequence. We report a patient who underwent aortic valve replacement for bicuspid aortic valve. The prosthesis sewing ring distorted the circumflex, producing myocardial infarcts and sudden death during exercise.

Background: Olfactory epileptic auras are rare, constituting about 0.9% of all auras, and are typically described as unpleasant. They have usually been associated with tumors, but in some recent studies they have not.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of maintenance haemodialysis and live-related renal transplantation on the reproductive potential of men with end-stage renal disease.

Patients And Methods: The plasma levels of testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were determined, and semen analysed, in 19 men (22-41 years old) with advanced uraemia after 6 months of dialysis and again 6 months after renal transplantation. Eight patients who had azoospermia or severe oligospermia underwent testicular biopsy after 6 months of dialysis and again 6 months after the transplant.

The effect of low dose rHuEPO therapy in ESRD patients on regular dialysis therapy was assessed in a prospective study in 22 patients. Routine hematological and biochemical tests, bone marrow aspiration, serum iron and ferritin studies were performed. The quality of life was also assessed.

Non-invasive assessment of left ventricular function was performed by echocardiography and radionuclide ventriculography in 17 end-stage renal disease patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Patients with diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease and pericardial or valvular heart disease were excluded from the study. Parameters studied on echocardiography were left ventricular internal diameter in diastole (LVIDd), left atrial diameter (LAD), Aortic root diameter (ARD), Left ventricular posterior wall thickness in systole (LVPWs), End diastolic volume (EDV), End Systolic volume (ESV), fractional shortening percentage (FS%) and ejection fraction (EF).

Twenty-seven live related donor renal allograft recipients were evaluated for dyslipoproteinemia. Twenty-two patients received dual immunosuppression with prednisolone and azathioprine. Five patients received cyclosporin as well.

Serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were measured in 127 patients with varying grade of chronic renal failure (CRF). Sensitive immunoradiometricassays (IRMA) were used so that small changes in TSH levels if any, could be appreciated, and to see if such alterations exhibit some relationship with those in thyroid hormone levels. Mean serum TSH levels in the patient group of 2.

Forty-eight patients with strong clinical suspicion of vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) as the cause for their renal disease; were subjected to direct radionuclide cystography and roentgenographic micturating cystourethrography for its detection. Forty-four of them underwent cystoscopy under local anaesthesia to document the position and appearance of the ureteric orifices. Of the 92 kidney-ureter 'units' available for study, 20 had reflux positive on micturating cystourethrography and 22 had direct radionuclide cystography positivity.

Iron deficiency is a common nutritional deficiency, which leads to structural functional and enzymatic changes in the body that may affect the pharmacokinetics of drugs. The present study in 7 normal volunteers and 8 adult male patients with iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) was done to investigate the effect of iron deficiency and its treatment with total dose iron (TDI) on the bioavailability of a single dose of phenytoin. Phenytoin bioavailability was investigated before and 3 and 28 days after TDI.

310 Fine needle aspirations biopsies (FNAB) were performed in sixty-five live related renal donor transplant recipients in a prospective study over 2 years. 82.8% of FNAB were adequate for opinion and there were no complications after the procedure.

Food and drug interaction is a major variable in bioavailability of drugs. Isoniazid is the most common antitubercular drug used in India. We studied the effect of standard Indian breakfast and lunch on the bioavailability of isoniazid in a single dose crossover study in normal male volunteers.

The levels of serum total thyroxine (TT4), triiodothyronine (TT3), free T3, (FT3) free T4 (FT4) and thyrotropin (TSH) were measured in 127 clinically euthyroid patients with varying grades of chronic renal failure (CRF); and 97 healthy individuals. They were grouped as: Group I containing 93 patients on conservative management; Group II containing 34 patients on regular dialysis therapy; and Group III (normals). Group I patients showed significant decrease in TT3, TT4 and FT3 levels (p less than 0.

We retrospectively studied 10 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-seen between October 1981 and October 1989-who underwent 29 pregnancies to assess the influence of SLE on the outcome of pregnancy and the effects of pregnancy on the course of lupus nephritis. Nineteen gestations occurred before the diagnosis of SLE was made, 7 after and in 3 cases it wasmade in the second trimester of pregnancy. Out of 29 pregnancies, 12 were successful, 16 unsuccessful and 1 patient underwent a medical termination of pregnancy (MTP).
