Introduction And Objectives: In adults, C-reactive protein is a marker of cardiovascular risk. It is associated with both classical and metabolic risk factors and is a predictor of cardiovascular events. The aim was to investigate the relationship of the C-reactive protein concentration to classical cardiovascular risk factors, measures of adiposity subclinical atherosclerosis in children.

[Chest pain unit: first experience in Chile].

Background: In large series, nearly 60% of admissions for suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS) had a non-coronary etiology of the pain. However, short term mortality of non recognized ACS patients, mistakenly discharged from the emergency room is at least twice greater than the expected if they would had been admitted. The concept of a chest pain unit (CPU) is a methodological approach developed to address these issues.

RAD51 135G>C polymorphism and risk of familial breast cancer in a South American population.

Several studies have reported that mutations in genes involved in maintenance of genome integrity may be responsible for increased cancer risk. Human RAD51, known to function in DNA repair, interacts with a number of proteins implicated in breast cancer (BC), including BRCA1 and BRCA2. Few studies have investigated the role of RAD51 gene variations in familial BC.

Use of endovascular stents in atherosclerotic renovascular stenosis: blood pressure and renal function changes in hypertensive patients.

Atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis may result in hypertension and ischemic nephropathy. Renal artery endovascular stenting has emerged as current therapy; however, the percentage of patients who benefit from this procedure is still not well established. The authors studied 116 hypertensive patients with atherosclerotic renovascular stenosis who underwent successful renal artery stenting for the first time.

Role of a Galphai2 protein splice variant in the formation of an intracellular dopamine D2 receptor pool.

Treatment of D2-receptor-expressing cells with specific drugs upregulates the receptor number at the cell surface independently of protein synthesis, leading to the concept of an intracellular receptor pool. However, how this pool is operating is still an enigma. Here, we report that a splice variant of the Galphai2 protein, protein sGalphai2, plays a crucial role in the maintenance of this D2-receptor pool.

Anticoagulation in ambulatory care: an evidence-based review of the literature.

Factors associated with the catastrophic decline of a cloudforest frog fauna in Guatemala.

Comparison of recent and historical surveys of frog populations in cloudforest habitat in Sierra de las Minas, Guatemala, indicated population declines and local extirpation of several species. Pathological exams of diseased tadpoles indicated infection by amphibian chytridiomycosis. The local habitat has been severely altered by recent establishment of large-scale leatherleaf fern production.

Biocomplexity and conservation of biodiversity hotspots: three case studies from the Americas.

The perspective of 'biocomplexity' in the form of 'coupled natural and human systems' represents a resource for the future conservation of biodiversity hotspots in three direct ways: (i) modelling the impact on biodiversity of private land-use decisions and public land-use policies, (ii) indicating how the biocultural history of a biodiversity hotspot may be a resource for its future conservation, and (iii) identifying and deploying the nodes of both the material and psycho-spiritual connectivity between human and natural systems in service to conservation goals. Three biocomplexity case studies of areas notable for their biodiversity, selected for their variability along a latitudinal climate gradient and a human-impact gradient, are developed: the Big Thicket in southeast Texas, the Upper Botanamo River Basin in eastern Venezuela, and the Cape Horn Archipelago at the austral tip of Chile. More deeply, the biocomplexity perspective reveals alternative ways of understanding biodiversity itself, because it directs attention to the human concepts through which biodiversity is perceived and understood.

Localization of the GoLoco motif carrier regulator of G-protein signalling 12 and 14 proteins in monkey and rat brain.

Regulator of G-protein signalling (RGS)12 and -14 proteins possess the RGS domain, Ras-binding domains and the GoLoco motif. Emerging evidence suggests that these proteins are involved in several cellular functions in addition to stimulation of GTPase activity of G-protein alpha subunits. However, our understanding of the role of the two proteins in brain function remains marginal.

Tacrolimus as basic immunosuppression in pregnancy after renal transplantation. A single-center experience.

Renal transplantation restores fertility within an average of 6 months, so women of childbearing age are able to consider pregnancy. Successful pregnancies have been reported in recent years under different immunosuppressive regimens, but the optimal treatment to achieve the maximum safety for both the mother and fetus remains unclear. Tacrolimus has been demonstrated to provide long-term immunosuppression and prevent rejection in most renal transplants.

Aim: To assess the prevalence of risk factors in patients admitted for a coronary or vascular event and to evaluate the proportion of patients that normalize these factors after one year of follow up.

Material And Methods: Three hundred and fifty seven patients aged 64+/-13 years (264 males), admitted to a University Clinical Hospital for a coronary or vascular event were studied.

The safety and pharmacokinetics of nelfinavir coadministered with zidovudine and lamivudine were studied in 26 infants during the first 6 weeks of life. Cohort 1 infants (n = 7) received 10 mg/kg 3 times a day, and cohort 2 infants (n = 19) received 40 mg/kg twice a day. Two cohort 1 infants at week 1 and none at week 6 exceeded the target 24-hour area under the curve (AUC) of 30 mug.

Yalom (1995) has stated that psycho-educational interventions could be made more effective by incorporating a focus on the interpersonal process. A qualitative analysis is proposed to investigate the degree of fidelity with which a psycho-educational intervention for women with depressive symptoms was delivered and to identify Yalom's significant therapeutic mechanisms operating in group therapy. The intervention consisted of six 2 two-hour weekly sessions organized around educational material.

Antiphospholipid syndrome associated with infections: clinical and microbiological characteristics of 100 patients.

Objective: To describe and analyse the clinical characteristics of 100 patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) associated with infections.

Methods: Patients were identified by a computer assisted search (Medline) of published reports to locate all cases of APS published in English, Spanish, and French from 1983 to 2003. The bilateral Fisher exact test was used for statistics.

Perceptions of trait typicality in gender stereotypes: examining the role of attribution and categorization processes.

Gender stereotypes are understood as the ascription of different personality traits to men and women. Data from American and Italian samples showed that consistent with the attribution hypothesis, the estimated prevalence of a trait in a target group predicted perceptions of trait typicality well. In contrast, there was no support for the categorization hypothesis, according to which perceived differences in trait prevalence between groups should independently predict trait typicality.

[Female depression viewed from women's subjectivity].

The aim of the study was to explore the way in which depression in women is conceptualized, experienced, and given meaning from the perspective of the women themselves, based on a review of text material on the subject. The focus group technique was used to present the text, which deals with depression, its causes, and coping strategies. Twenty-seven women, divided into four groups, participated in the study.

Unfortunately, the adherence required to keep good control of viral replication is higher than what is required in other medical conditions.
