Article Synopsis
  • Exclusive breastfeeding is critical for infants' immunity, and not breastfeeding during the neonatal stage can negatively impact health.
  • A study analyzed infants from the Diarrheal Disease Surveillance System between 2009-2013, comparing those who lacked breastfeeding to those who were breastfed.
  • The findings indicated that infants who weren't breastfed had higher rates of severe dehydration and complications from diarrhea, associated with younger age, lower maternal education, and poor health status.

We aimed to evaluate the factors associated with nosocomial infections (NIs) in under-5 children and in bacterial isolates from their blood, urine, and stool. We reviewed all under-5 hospitalized children with clinically diagnosed NIs in the inpatient ward at Dhaka Hospital of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, between January and December 2012. Comparison was made among the children with (cases = 71) and without NI (controls = 142).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the factors related to Streptococcal bacteremia in children under five years old suffering from diarrhea, utilizing data from a hospital in Bangladesh.
  • The findings indicate that children with Streptococcal bacteremia displayed more severe symptoms, such as nutritional edema, hypoxemia, and respiratory distress compared to those without bacteremia, although the death rates were similar.
  • Conclusions emphasize that specific clinical signs, particularly related to dehydration and respiratory issues, are significantly associated with Streptococcal bacteremia in this vulnerable population.

We aimed to evaluate sociodemographic, epidemiological, and clinical risk factors for pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in children presenting with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and pneumonia. Children aged 0 to 59 months with SAM and radiologic pneumonia from April 2011 to July 2012 were studied in Bangladesh. Children with confirmed PTB (by culture and/or X-pert MTB/RIF) (cases = 27) and without PTB (controls = 81; randomly selected from 378 children) were compared.
