Background: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) represents the most severe form of peripheral artery disease. While previous studies have focused on gender and racial disparities, there is lack of evidence regarding the impact of housing status. The aim of this analysis was to identify disparities in inpatient management and outcomes of CLTI based on housing status.

  • - Amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia is a rare blood disorder that severely reduces platelet production due to a lack of megakaryocytes, which can lead to serious complications, especially in patients with cardiovascular issues.
  • - A case study presented a patient with chest pain diagnosed with NSTEMI, who also had severe thrombocytopenia and triple vessel disease, complicating urgent surgical options despite treatment efforts.
  • - Effective management requires accurate diagnosis to differentiate amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia from immune thrombocytopenia and emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary collaboration in treating complex cases in modern healthcare.

Introduction: Autonomy during residency is crucial to the training and development of competent surgeons. An essential component of this process is the 'teaching assistant (TA)' case, an indispensable opportunity for residents to gain confidence and hone intraoperative skills. However, high-quality data on the volume and diversity of cases that graduates perform are scarce.

: Despite resuscitative efforts, cardiac arrest (CA) continues to result in high mortality and poor prognosis. However, a gap remains in understanding the comparative outcomes of efforts in emergency departments (ED) over recent years. This study evaluated patients with CA during ED visits, with a particular focus on outcomes of mortality and transition of care.

Patients with cerebral palsy (CP) are particularly vulnerable to respiratory infections, yet comparative outcomes between COVID-19 and influenza in this population remain underexplored. Using the National Inpatient Sample from 2020-2021, we performed a retrospective analysis of hospital data for adults with CP diagnosed with either COVID-19 or influenza. The study aimed to compare the outcomes of these infections to provide insights into their impact on this vulnerable population.

: This retrospective study aims to examine the patient demographics, survival rates, and treatment methods for small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNEC) and large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of prostate origin while also identifying the main differences between common types of prostate cancer with comparative analysis for survival. : Our analysis utilized the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (SEER), and data was collected from 2000-2020. Cox proportional hazards and chi-squared analysis were used for statistical analysis.

Objective: Necrotizing pancreatitis (NP) is a severe form of pancreatitis that often necessitates intensive care and can result in significant morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to investigate racial and gender disparities in palliative care (PC) utilization among mechanically-ventilated patients with NP.

Methods: In this retrospective analysis using the National Inpatient Sample from 2016 to 2020, we investigated 84 335 patients with NP requiring invasive mechanical ventilation, and the utilization of PC services and their disparities based on gender and race.

An 83-year-old man with a history of monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance, macrocytic anemia, and cytopenias presented with hemorrhagic bullae on his left hand, alongside intermittent fevers and joint pain. Laboratory findings indicated anemia, elevated mean corpuscular volume, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and a high C-reactive protein level. A biopsy of the bullae showed neutrophilic dermatosis, and computed tomography scans of the thorax revealed lung opacities and mediastinal lymphadenopathy, suggesting neutrophilic alveolitis.

Background: Spontaneous pneumothorax (PTX) is more prevalent among COVID-19 patients than other critically ill patients, but studies on this are limited. This study compared clinical characteristics and in-hospital outcomes among COVID-19 patients with concomitant PTX to provide insight into how PTX affects health care utilization and complications, which informs clinical decisions and healthcare resource allocation.

Methods: The 2020 Nationwide Inpatient Sample was used analyze patient demographics and outcomes, including age, race, sex, insurance status, median income, length of hospital stay, mortality rate, hospitalization costs, comorbidities, mechanical ventilation, and vasopressor support.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and sepsis shock (SS) are both severe and life-threatening conditions requiring specialized care, including palliative care (PC), to optimize comfort. However, data on the utilization of PC in this population, including racial and gender differences, are limited. We used the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2016 to 2020 to extract data on patients with NF and SS as well as PC utilization.

Background: The available literature indicates a link between SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and a heightened probability of experiencing negative outcomes for both the pregnant patient and the developing fetus. We compared clinical outcomes of pregnant patients with or without COVID-19 hospitalized during delivery.

Methods: Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to compare outcomes and was adjusted for patient-related, hospital-related, and illness severity indicators.

  • Acute appendicitis has a lifetime risk of 7-8%, with treatment options including non-operative management (NOM) using antibiotics and surgery, depending on the patient's health.
  • Interval appendectomy (IA) involves delayed surgery and is useful for patients with contained perforations, as it can help identify the nature of the condition and lower recurrence risks.
  • Post-surgery, careful closure of the appendiceal stump is crucial and can be done with various methods, while debates continue regarding the management, complications, and the potential of endoscopic appendectomy.

  • * A study analyzed data from over 25,400 ESRD patients treated between 2016 and 2020, finding similar mortality rates between peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD), but PD had lower hospitalization costs and complications.
  • * The research indicated a decrease in STEMI mortality over five years, although HD patients dealt with longer hospital stays and higher costs, emphasizing the importance of choosing the right dialysis method for managing health and expenses.

Introduction Existing data suggest an association between primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) and cannabis consumption, although evidence remains controversial. Methods This study used the 2016-2019 National Inpatient Sample Database to examine inpatients with PSP, categorizing them as cannabis users and non-users. Multivariate regression analyzed continuous variables, chi-square assessed categorical variables, and logistic regression models were built.

Article Synopsis
  • - Endovascular aortic repair is gaining attention for treating abdominal aortic aneurysms, with a key focus on comparing transfemoral access (TFA) and upper extremity access (UEA).
  • - A study involving 9,403 participants found that TFA significantly reduced the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and spinal cord ischemia, while also requiring less contrast agent and shortening fluoroscopy time.
  • - Despite benefits in certain risk factors, there were no significant differences in technical success, 30-day mortality rates, or hospital stay duration between the two access methods, indicating the need for more large-scale studies.

Previous studies have convincingly demonstrated the negative impact of dementia on overall health outcomes. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is burgeoning evidence suggesting a possible association between dementia and adverse outcomes, however the relationship has not been conclusively established. We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 816,960 hospitalized COVID-19 patients aged 65 or older from the 2020 national inpatient sample.
