The choice of antidepressants for depression or neurotic disorder is analyzed in the article. Drugs of the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are used for various mental disorders more often than other antidepressants according to clinical recommendations. Drugs of other groups (selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, tetracyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors) are used when the effectiveness of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors is insufficient or the severity of the mental disorder is significant.

Brief information about the causes of depressive disorders in COVID-19 and general strategies of their treatment is presented. According to the biopsychosocial model of the development of mental diseases, depressive disorders in COVID-19 develop due to the toxic effect of the coronavirus on nervous system and other organism systems, possible side-effects of COVID-19 therapy, the psychogenic effect of excessive and inaccurate information about the coronavirus infection and the consequences of its spread, adverse social changes during the pandemic. If infection with the SARS-CoV-2 did not develop, depressive disorders may arise due to psychogenic information and negative social influences.

There were used epidemiological, clinical-archival and clinical-psypathological methods. It was established, that that internosological pathomorphosis of neurosis came out in reduction of their rates in general structure of psychological pathology.

The protective effects of hypoxic preconditioning on the development of depressive states in rat models were studied. Three episodes of intermittent preconditioning using hypobaric hypoxia (360 mmHg, 2 h) prevented the onset of depressive behavioral reactions, hyperfunction of the hypophyseal-adrenal system, and impairments in its suppression in the dexamethasone test in rats following unavoidable aversive stress in a model of endogenous depression. The anxiolytic and antidepressant actions of hypoxic preconditioning in experiments on rats were no less marked than those of the tetracyclic antidepressant ludiomil.

The protective effect of hypoxic preconditioning on the development of depressive states in rat experimental models has been studied. Three-trial preconditioning by repetitive hypobaric hypoxia (360 mm Hg, 2h) prevented triggering of behavioral depression, pituitary-adrenal axis hyperactivity and impairment of negative feedback in dexamethasone test in rats following inescapable aversive stress in the model of endogenous depression. Anxyolytic and antidepressant-like effect of the hypoxic preconditioning was not less than that of tetracyclic antidepressant ludiomil.

In 17 cases, the studies were made before and after therapy.

Male Wistar rats displayed persistent depressive symptoms (depressive-like behaviour in open field, increased anxiety levels in elevated plus maze, ahedonia, elevated plasma glucocorticoids and impaired dexamethasone test) following the exposure to unpredictable and inescapable footshock in the learned helplessness paradigm. Antidepressant treatment (ludiomil, 5 mg/kg i.
