Systemic Hypertension Effects on the Ciliary Body and Iris. An Immunofluorescence Study with Aquaporin 1, Aquaporin 4, and Na⁺, K⁺ ATPase in Hypertensive Rats.

Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and aquaporin 4 (AQP4) have been identified in the eye as playing an essential role in the formation of the aqueous humor along with the Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase pump. Different authors have described the relationship between blood pressure, aqueous humor production, and intraocular pressure with different conclusions, with some authors supporting a positive correlation between blood pressure and intraocular pressure while others disagree. The aim of this work was to study the effect of high blood pressure on the proteins involved in the production of aqueous humor in the ciliary body (CB) and iris.

Nutritional supplements with omega 3 in retinal disease: Relationship between volume and concentration in commercial products.

Objective: To analyse the morphometric characteristics and the concentration of (docosahexaenoic acid) DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) of the different nutritional supplements with omega 3 available on the market for retinal disease.

Material And Methods: A double-blind study was conducted with a single observer, of the different omega 3 supplementation tablets sample marketed in Spain. The length of the tablet, the concentration of omega 3 in total, as well as DHA and EPA were studied separately using the amount provided by the manufacturer and the volume of the capsule calculated from the development of a specific formula for it.

Genetic variant of Stickler's syndrome.

Cases Reports: Three myopic components of a same family came for study because presented severely degraded vitreous, equatorial membranes, retinal pigment epithelium hyperplasia, vascular sheathed and sclerosis of peripheral predominance. A genetic study confirmed the diagnosis of Stickler syndrome with a variant in the mutation of the COL2A1 gene.

Discussion: Stickler's syndrome should be suspected in families with a characteristic phenotype with vitreous syneresis and alterations in the retina, but there may be genetic variants that do not express the classic phenotype.

MEK Retinopathy. Clinical case reports.

Case Reports: Three clinical cases are presented of MEK retinopathy associated with the combination of cobimetinib and vemurafenib characterised by alteration of the retinal pigment epithelium and neurosensory detachment. Two of the cases conserved the vision of the unit, and the third developed a large bilateral neurosensory detachment with final visual acuity of 0.6 for the right eye and 0.

Mediterranean diet adherence by patients with primary open angle glaucoma.

Objective: To study the adherence to the Mediterranean diet in patients affected by primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).

Materials And Methods: An observational study was conducted to assess the adherence to the Mediterranean diet in patients affected by POAG, and who attended the Ophthalmology Department of the Canary Islands University Hospital. The study included completing a 14-item questionnaire validated by the PREDIMED Study, in person or by telephone.

Dome shaped macula associated with myopic retinochoroidosis. Use of spironolactone.

Cases Reports: The cases are presented of three women of 22, 36 and 55 years old with bilateral myopic retinochoroidosis. They had unilateral decreased visual acuity, normal bilateral tonometry, and biomicroscopy. Funduscopy showed bilateral and unilateral myopic maculopathy, and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) showed a dome shaped macula with neurosensory detachment.

Spironolactone, a therapeutic alternative in the treatment of diffuse retinal pigment epitheliopathy.

Case Report: Two cases are presented of patients with chronic diffuse epitheliopathy (CDE) that showed a favourable response when treated with spironolactone. The first patient had regions of neurosensory detachment (DNS) and the second, multiple DNS, secondary intra-retinal cysts and retinal pigment epithelium detachment.

Discussion: After treatment with spironolactone, both patients showed a visual acuity improvement and structural changes (reduced neurosensory retinal detachment and cystoid degeneration).

Sarcoidosis. Debut as orbital pseudotumour.

Case Report: 78 year-old female patient being investigated for a left orbital pseudotumour of 17 days onset. She had proptosis, pain, with no limitation of eye movements, periorbital oedema, and upper eyelid ptosis, compatible with an orbital pseudotumour. The MRI showed an upper outer left orbital mass adjacent to the side of eyeball and an increase in soft tissue at the level of lacrimal gland.

Intracameral cefuroxime and moxifloxacin used as endophthalmitis prophylaxis after cataract surgery: systematic review of effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.

Postoperative endophthalmitis is one of the most serious potential complications of ocular lens surgery. Its incidence can be reduced by means of antibiotic prophylaxis. Although the prophylactic use of intracameral cefuroxime has been extended, other drugs, such as moxifloxacin, have arisen as alternatives.

Amniotic membrane as single treatment in complication of exposed scleral buckle.

Purpose: To report a case of complicated exposed scleral buckle in which amniotic membrane was used to repair the extremely thin sclera that showed the underlying choroid.

Methods: Interventional case report. A 65-year-old man presented to our Department with severe eye pain after retinal detachment repair with scleral buckling technique 7 years ago.

This paper summarises the norms and laws applicable to telemedicine with three basic principles involved: medical practice, data management, and communication technologies. Following the subsidiary principle, the applicable legislative levels are: European Union, National, Autonomous Community, Medical Professional Colleges, and Local Medical Colleges.
