Adaptations and responses to drought in Quercus species of North America.

Most North American oaks (Quercus spp.) are adapted to drought-prone sites by an ability either to avoid, or to tolerate, water stress, or both. Generally, they have deep-penetrating root systems, enabling them to maintain relatively high predawn water potentials during drought.

Technetium-99m-human polyclonal IgG radiolabeled via the hydrazino nicotinamide derivative for imaging focal sites of infection in rats.

The biologic behavior of human polyclonal immunoglobulin (IgG) radiolabeled with technetium-99m (99mTc) by a novel method, via a nicotinyl hydrazine derivative, was evaluated in rats. Technetium-99m- and indium-111-IgG were co-administered to normal rats and biodistribution was determined at 2, 6, and 16 hr. The inflammation imaging properties of the two reagents were compared in rats with deep-thigh infection due to Escherichia coli.

Cytotoxicity, radiosensitization, antitumor activity, and interaction with hyperthermia of a Co(III) mustard complex.

A complex of Co(III) with a nitro group and a bis(2-chloroethyl)amine moiety was prepared in an effort to develop a new anticancer agent with radiosensitizing capabilities, direct antitumor activity, and the ability to interact positively with clinically relevant hyperthermia temperatures. The activity of this drug was compared to a similar Co(III) complex, nitro-bis(2,4-pentanedionato)(pyridine)cobalt(III) [Co(Py)], which bears a pyridine moiety mustard of bis(2-chloroethyl)amine and should have no alkylating abilities. In EMT6 cells nitro-bis(2,4- pentanedionato)(bis(2-chloroethyl)amine)cobalt(III) [Co(BCA)] was significantly more cytotoxic than Co(Py) and both drugs were more toxic toward normally oxygenated than hypoxic cells.

Drought adaptations and responses in five genotypes of Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.: photosynthesis, water relations and leaf morphology.

Genotypic variation in photosynthesis and plant water relations during drought, and in leaf and seedling morphology were examined in greenhouse-grown Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh. (green ash) from five populations located along an east-west transect from New York State to South Dakota. During a 17-day drought, South Dakota seedlings, from the most xeric habitat, maintained the highest net photosynthesis and leaf conductance, and New York seedlings, from the most mesic habitat, exhibited the lowest net photosynthesis and leaf conductance.

Pain drawings and sickle cell disease pain.

This study examined the relationship of pain drawings to somatization in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Sixty-nine adult patients with SCD completed a pain drawing in which they shaded in areas of the body in which they experienced pain and also completed the symptom checklist (SCL) 90-R as an index of psychological distress. Analysis of variance indicated that patients who were categorized as having pain drawings with sites inconsistent with expected SCD pain patterns had somatization scores in the clinically significant range.

Sickle cell disease pain: relation of coping strategies to adjustment.

This study examines pain coping strategies in a relatively neglected pain population, sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Seventy-nine patients diagnosed with SCD were given a structured interview to assess pain, activity level, and health care use during painful episodes. Patients also completed the SCL-90-R as an index of psychological distress and the Coping Strategies Questionnaire.

Potentiation of radiation-induced cell kill by synthetic metalloporphyrins.

The effects of the combination of several meso-substituted, water soluble metalloporphyrins with ionizing radiation on hypoxic and oxic monolayers of Chinese hamster fibroblast (V79N) cells were studied. The metalloporphyrins tested included a series of cationic metalloporphyrins complexed with Co(III), Zn(II), Fe(III), Cu(II), Pd(II) or Mn(III) and a series of anionic porphyrins chelated with Co(III), Fe(III), Cu(II), Rh(III), Mn(III) or Sn(IV). Both cationic and anionic free porphyrins were also tested.

Effect of heat on the cytotoxicity and interaction with DNA of a series of platinum complexes.

The effect of elevated temperature on the cytotoxicity and interaction with DNA of a series of platinum(II) complexes was examined. CDDP showed greater enhancement in cell killing with heat than the other platinum(II) complexes. There were approximately 2 decades enhancement in cell killing by 10 microM CDDP at 42 degrees C compared to 37 degrees C.

Implicit learning: robustness in the face of psychiatric disorders.

The performance of a group of psychiatric inpatients on two different cognitive tasks was compared with that of a control group of college undergraduates. The task in the first experiment was implicit learning of a complex, synthetic grammar; the task in the second experiment was explicit learning of relatively simple letter-to-number matching rules. In the first experiment, differences between the normals and the psychiatrically impaired were found on the preliminary memorization task but not on the implicit grammar learning task; in the second experiment, differences were observed on all phases of the experiment, with the inpatients performing no better than chance.

Psychiatric disability in female carriers of the fragile X chromosome.

Fragile X syndrome, an X-linked genetic condition, is an important genetic cause of mental retardation in males. In addition to mental retardation, hemizygous males with fragile X syndrome appear to have a greater likelihood of displaying behaviors classified under the diagnostic category of pervasive developmental disorder than would be expected on the basis of mental retardation alone. Although the majority of female heterozygotes with the fragile X genetic defect are of normal intelligence, our clinical work with this population and a recent case report have suggested that females with fragile X syndrome have an increased rate of schizophrenia spectrum and affective disorders.

Operation of a support service team in the emergency department of a general hospital.

We describe the development and operation of an emergency support service team in the Emergency Department of the Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, Ont. The team, composed of professionals from other departments of the hospital, provides emotional and practical support to family members or survivors in medical emergencies. We discuss the roles of the team members and their procedures for dealing with distress and grief.

Adolescent sexual abuse: clinical discussion of a community treatment response.

Adolescent sexual abuse is an overwhelming issue for society and the medical community. Adolescent medicine has only begun to emerge in the mainstream of medical practice. Sexual medicine, adolescent chemical dependency, and abusive medicine are emerging subspecialties of mainstream medicine, with victimization syndromes just beginning to be explored.

Some complexes of cobalt(III) and iron(III) are radiosensitizers of hypoxic EMT6 cells.

The radiosensitizing potential in hypoxic EMT6 cells of several complexes of Co(III) and Fe(III) has been examined. The cytotoxicity of each of the agents toward oxygenated and hypoxic EMT6 cells was tested over the concentration range of 1 to 500 micron for 1-h drug exposure. There was no statistically significant difference between the cytotoxicity of these complexes toward oxygenated and hypoxic cells.
