Periampullary malignancies are uncommon and encompass a wide variety of tumors. Early and accurate biopsy-proven diagnosis is important because different malignancy subtypes warrant different management and treatment plans. We present a unique and rare case of periampullary lymphoma, initially presenting as acute pancreatitis.

Background: While bidirectional endoscopy is recognized as the standard approach for investigating iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in men older than 45 and postmenopausal women, evidence supporting the application of this approach in younger men and premenopausal women is scarce in the absence of symptoms. Our primary aim is to identify the diagnostic yield of bidirectional endoscopy in men younger than 45 and premenopausal women, and describe the clinical characteristics of those with significant endoscopic and pathology-proven findings.

Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review including patients younger than age 45 with IDA who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and/or colonoscopy at the Brooklyn VA Hospital between 2009 and 2023.

Background: It is well-described that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection is associated with an increased risk of thrombotic complications. While there have been many cases of pulmonary emboli and deep vein thrombosis in these patients, reports of COVID-19 associated portal vein thrombosis (PVT) have been uncommon. We present a unique case of concomitant PVT and splenic artery thrombosis in a COVID-19 patient.

Esophageal varices commonly affect cirrhotic patients as a result of elevated portal system resistance. Blood pools within esophageal portosystemic collateral vessels, which can eventually rupture, leading to life-threatening hemorrhage. To prevent this, cirrhotic patients without a history of varices undergo endoscopic surveillance for varices every 2-3 years.

Purpose: The purpose of this bibliometric study was to identify and analyze the most cited publications on acute distal biceps repair.

Methods: Using the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database, we searched for the top 50 most cited publications on acute distal biceps repair and analyzed them based on various metrics.

Results: The top 50 publications were cited a total of 3171 times and approximately 151 times per year.

Aim: The aim of this study was to prospectively compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) vs micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) in open-angle glaucoma patients.

Patients And Methods: In all, 38 patients were randomized to 360° MLT and 31 patients were randomized to 360° SLT. IOP was measured at intervals of 1 hour and 1, 1-6, 6-12, 6-24, 24-36, and 36-52 weeks.

Purpose: To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety profile of micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (MP-CPC) in patients with refractory glaucoma.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective case series of 79 consecutive patients who underwent MP-CPC at the Wills Eye Hospital from March 23, 2014 to June 23, 2016 and who had at least 3 months of follow-up. Treatment success was defined as an intraocular pressure (IOP) of 6 to 21 mm Hg or a reduction of IOP by 20%.

Purpose: Phacoemulsification has been cited as a possible cause of bleb failure in eyes with prior trabeculectomy. No method has been developed to directly evaluate the risk of bleb failure after phacoemulsification. We investigate the use of trypan blue during cataract surgery in the setting of a preexisting trabeculectomy to evaluate the functional status of the bleb and predict postoperative bleb function.

Purpose: To assess the viability of a manufactured high-density polyethylene patch graft material (Su-Por) for prevention of tube shunt exposure.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective review of the first 11 patients from the Wills Eye Hospital Glaucoma Service to receive the high-density polyethylene patch graft during tube shunt surgery.

Results: Four patients (36.

Background: To determine if there is a difference in periocular post-operative infection rates when utilizing new versus re-processed monopolar electrocautery tips.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 4,976 consecutive surgical cases involving 17,149 procedures. Post-operative infections were identified using chart review, facility infection surveillance records, and surgeon reporting.

Background: Patients with prior coronary bypass surgery with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (MI) pose an increasingly common clinical problem. We assessed the characteristics and outcomes of such patients undergoing thrombolysis for acute MI.

Methods And Results: We compared the characteristics and outcomes of patients in the Global Utilization of Streptokinase and Tissue Plasminogen Activator for Occluded Coronary Arteries trial (GUSTO-I) who had had prior bypass (n = 1784, 4% of the population) with those without prior coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), all of whom were randomized to receive one of four thrombolytic strategies.

We report two patients with acquired fistulas between the internal mammary and pulmonary arteries after coronary bypass surgery. This is a rare complication of bypass surgery and may be a cause of recurrent angina postoperatively due to coronary artery steal. A table of all the cases reported in the literature is compiled.

All available evidence that exercise may protect against coronary heart disease is circumstantial, and direct evidence is difficult to obtain in human beings. Therefore, we studied the effect of moderate conditioning with treadmill exercise on developing coronary-artery disease in monkeys on an atherogenic diet. Physical training was demonstrated by slow heart rates.
