[Day care centres for senior citizens. A valid alternative to geriatric institutionalization].

This paper presents a general outlook of the situation of old age people with different levels of dependency, and of the programs aimed at satisfying their needs. Also, the conceptual definition of Day Care Center is established, comparing this concept to other day care systems, as well as the analysis of this model's scope and limitations. Finally, it presents a Day Care Center project aimed at assisting physically disabled and non physically disabled old age people, which has been recently inaugurated by AMIA (Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina), in Buenos Aires.

Transvaginal ultrasonographic characterization of ovarian masses with an improved, weighted scoring system.

Objective: The aim of the study was to modify a previously devised morphologic scoring system with the use of transvaginal ultrasonography in the hope of improving discrimination of benign from malignant ovarian and adnexal masses.

Study Design: Transvaginal ultrasonographic images of 312 patients for a total of 350 ovarian and adnexal masses were obtained over a 3-year period. The derived morphologic data were analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis to select the best performance of the previously described scoring system by Sassone et al.

Fetal stomach measurements: not reproducible by the same observer.

We hypothesized that because fetal stomach filling and emptying is a dynamic process, measurements of the stomach dimensions might not be reproducible. Serial measurements 20 minutes apart were made of the stomach in 146 fetuses at 14 to 41 weeks of gestation. In 88 of these fetuses, the biparietal diameter also was measured to provide a standard for comparison.
