It is known, that Saccharomycetes can accumulate mineral substances with targeted enrichment of the growth medium. Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a life-threatening primary immunodeficiency associated with bleeding of variable severity due to thrombocytopenia. Correction of the thrombocytopenia is of paramount importance for most WAS patients. We report a retrospective analysis of the safety and efficacy of romiplostim treatment in reducing thrombocytopenia and bleeding tendency in 67 children (median age 1·3 years) with genetically confirmed WAS, followed in eight months (range, 1-12 months).

A nitrosamine photooxidation reaction is shown to generate a peroxy intermediate by experimental physical-organic methods. The irradiation of phenyl and methyl-substituted nitrosamines in the presence of isotopically labeled 18-oxygen revealed that an O atom was trapped from a peroxy intermediate to trimethylphosphite or triphenylphosphine, or by nitrosamine itself, forming two moles of nitramine. The unstable peroxy intermediate can be trapped at low temperature in postphotolyzed solution in the dark.

The sampling of newborns (n=28) was examined. Out of them, 18 premature children formed main group (gestation age from 28 to35 weeks, body mass 2067,3±76,7g) and 10 mature children formed comparison group (gestation age from 38 to 41 weeks, body mass 3380,2±57,2g) born from mothers with physiologically occurring pregnancy without extra-genital pathology. In all children, the detection of endothelial cells isolated from umbilical cord vein in mixed umbilical blood and lysate was applied and indices of free radical oxidation of lipids, characterizing oxidizing stress as well and anti-oxidation activity using chemiluminescence technique.

Prenylsurfactants [(CH3)2C═CH(CH2)nSO3(-) Na(+) (n = 4, 6, or 8)] were designed to probe the "ene" reaction mechanism of singlet oxygen at the air-water interface. Increasing the number of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic chain caused an increase in the regioselectivity for a secondary rather than tertiary surfactant hydroperoxide, arguing for an orthogonal alkene on water. The use of water, deuterium oxide, and H2O/D2O mixtures helped to distinguish mechanistic alternatives to homogeneous solution conditions that include dewetting of the π bond and an unsymmetrical perepoxide transition state in the hydroperoxide-forming step.

The detection of an oxygen-atom photoexchange process of N-nitrosamines is reported. The photolysis of four nitrosamines (N-nitrosodiphenylamine 1, N-nitroso-N-methylaniline 2, N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)nitrosamine 3, and N-nitrosodiethylamine 4) with ultraviolet light was examined in an (18)O2-enriched atmosphere in solution. The paper contains the results of an experimental study of the clinical healing of the standard wound defect in the bulbar conjunctiva of rabbit after conjunctiva-plasty involving the use of the human amnion transplant; there is also a description of a histological study of reparative processes in the adjacent tissues and a description of morphological changes occurring in the transplant during the healing process. The study was made on 14 rabbits (28 eyes). It was established that the wound-surface healing occurs, beneath the amnion transplant, without a pronounced inflammation, scarring or immunologic-rejection reaction; its sequence is typical of inflammation and compensatory processes with the formation, in the outcome, of the conjunctiva coating of the eyeball, whose color and composition are ordinary.

Inulinase from Bacillus polymyxa 722 hydrolyzing a polyfructosan inulin was studied. The dependence of inulinase activity on pH, measurements of pK value, calculation of ionization heat, photoinactivation with methylene blue, and inhibition with p-chloromercuribenzoate suggest that the active center of this enzyme contains imidazole and sulfhydryl groups. A possible mechanism underlying cleavage of beta-2,1-fructoside bonds in the inulin molecule with inulinase is considered.
