Many adverse reactions have been reported in the literature as a result of cimetidine use. Generally they have involved the gastrointestinal and central nervous systems. We present a case of cimetidine-induced eosinophilia, and discuss the possible mechanisms of hematologic toxicity.

A case of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with pulmonary involvement is presented. The radiographic and computerized tomographic findings included multiple opacities, predominantly basal, of variable size. Associated pleural opacification was verified on both the chest roentgenogram and the computerized tomographic (CT) examination.

Aortic coarctation was diagnosed with the aid of sectorial scanning from the suprasternal position in 6 of 7 patients. Ultrasonic investigation allows one to assess myocardial status and detect a prolapse of the atrioventricular valves, aortal valve protrusion, the presence of a bicuspid aortal valve and other abnormalities accompanying aortic coarctation in adult patients.

The kinetics of formaldehyde biodegradation by Pseudomonas fluorescens was studied under the conditions of batch cultivation. The process was shown to depend on the substrate, biomass and metabolites concentrations. Their combined action is satisfactorily described by the equation (formula; see text) where Vmax = 3.

SH-reagents (alpha-ethyl maleimide, n-chlor mercuribenzoate, dithioglycolic acid) and hydrogen peroxide induce insignificant changes in the activity of hemolysin. Reducing reagents (2-mercaptoethanol and ascorbate) inhibit hemolytic activity. Cholesterol at a concentration of 4.

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG), a non-neoplastic lymphoreticular disorder, was diagnosed in a 65-year-old woman. Chest radiographs demonstrated bilateral lower lobe nodular infiltrates. Percutaneous needle biopsy of the lung showed an infiltrate composed of plasma cells, lymphocytes and large histiocytic-like cells.

Abnormal liver function was found in 34 (52%) of 67 young adults with measles; 5 of them (7%) also had a rise in bilirubin levels accompanied by icterus. Awareness of liver involvement in measles has been steadily increasing; consideration should be given to hepatitis as a possible complication of measles in young adults.

Intact and iodine-treated thyroglobulin from normal thyroid gland and from nodular euthyroid goiter were studied by means of circular dichroism to detect differences in the protein secondary structure. Contents of alpha- and beta-structures in thyroglobulins were differentiated only by several per cents but artificial iodination of the protein increased markedly the difference between thyroglobulins of various origin. Extrapolation of the data to "zero" content of iodine-containing amino acids demonstrated that the initial steps of thyroglobulin synthesis occurring before iodination "in vitro", appears to be also responsible for alterations in the protein secondary structure.

A 65-year-old patient developed nonpruritic purpuric skin eruptions following 10 days of coumadin treatment. Skin biopsy revealed vasculitis and immunofluorescent studies demonstrated the presence of IgM and C3 deposits in the walls of the affected blood vessels. Rechallenge with coumadin was followed by reappearance of the skin eruptions.

The Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH) is a rare but serious complication of chlorpropamide therapy. In 2 elderly women who had diabetes mellitus, the SIADH developed two months after the chlorpropamide dosage had been increased to 500 mg daily. The syndrome disappeared after withdrawal of the drug.

A patient with drug-induced thrombocytopenia who died because of massive pulmonary hemorrhage is described. The patient had a clinical picture of acute respiratory distress resembling pulmonary edema, but there was no hemoptysis. Chest x-ray films showed granular density in the pulmonary fields, and the electrocardiograms revealed a pattern of acute biatrial enlargement.

The extinction coefficient at 280 nm of the solution (pH 7,2-7,4) of thyroglobulin from normal thyroid and nodular euthyroid goiter was measured with the values of 0,6-0,7 to 0,9 ml.mg-1.cm-1.

A 68-year-old patient with the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion secondary to basilary skull fracture was treated successfully with demeclocycline and phenytoin. Phenytoin, which was considered in the past only as a useful diagnostic tool, was given to the patient on a long-term basis. The drug reversed the patient's symptoms and abnormal laboratory values to normal limits without adverse reactions during a treatment period of 8 months.
