Absorbable Hemostatic Agents Mimic Gossypiboma or Infected Collection on Imaging.

Absorbable hemostatic agents are commonly used in clinical practice and their imaging appearance is less known. In our case series, we demonstrate how absorbable hemostatic agents can masquerade as other clinically and medicolegally significant conditions such as gossypiboma and infected collections. Through our report, we aimed to describe the imaging features of absorbable hemostatic agents, to compare them with their imaging mimics, and provide a comprehensive review of the available literature.

Alternative Management Approach for Infected Gap Non-Union of Both Bone Forearm - A Case Report.

Introduction: Infected gap non-union is a serious complication seen in cases of diaphyseal fracture of forearm bones. It carries high morbidity in the form of severe functional impairment and poses a challenge to treat due to the complex anatomical relationship and articulations involved. Though there are multiple treatment options available, there are no guidelines for its management.

Luxury or Cultural Tourism Activities? The Role of Narcissistic Personality Traits and Travel-Related Motivations.

This study aimed to examine the role of travel-related motivations and preferences for activities (such as learning about local culture, relaxation and entertainment, status and social recognition, escape and curiosity, and experience) in the relationship between narcissistic personality traits and the preference for luxury tourism versus cultural tourism. A sample of 1342 Israeli community members was analyzed. The methodology utilized parallel mediation analyses to assess how different forms of narcissism (extraverted, antagonistic, neurotic, and communal) were associated with the desire for luxury tourism over cultural tourism, as mediated by various travel-related motivations.

Challenges with relativistic calculations in solids and molecules.

For molecules and solids containing heavy elements, accurate electronic-structure calculations require accounting not only for electronic correlations but also for relativistic effects. In molecules, relativity can lead to severe changes in the ground-state description. In solids, the interplay between both correlation and relativity can change the stability of phases or it can lead to an emergence of completely new phases.

Activation of alveolar epithelial ER stress by β-coronavirus infection disrupts surfactant homeostasis in mice: implications for COVID-19 respiratory failure.

COVID-19 syndrome is characterized by acute lung injury, hypoxemic respiratory failure, and high mortality. Alveolar type 2 (AT2) cells are essential for gas exchange, repair, and regeneration of distal lung epithelium. We have shown that the causative agent, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and other members of the β-coronavirus genus induce an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response in vitro; however, the consequences for host AT2 cell function in vivo are less understood.

Relativistic Fully Self-Consistent for Molecules: Total Energies and Ionization Potentials.

The fully self-consistent (sc) method with an iterative solution of the Dyson equation provides a consistent approach for describing the ground and excited states without any dependence on the mean-field reference. In this work, we present a relativistic version of sc for molecules containing heavy elements using the exact two-component (X2C) Coulomb approximation. We benchmark SOC-81 data set containing closed shell heavy elements for the first ionization potential using the fully self-consistent as well as one-shot .

Comparing Self-Consistent and Vertex-Corrected (Γ) Accuracy for Molecular Ionization Potentials.

We test the performance of self-consistent and several representative implementations of vertex-corrected (Γ). These approaches are tested on benchmark data sets covering full valence spectra (first ionization potentials and some inner valence shell excitations). For small molecules, when comparing against state-of-the-art wave function techniques, our results show that full self-consistency in the scheme either systematically outperforms vertex-corrected or gives results of at least comparative quality.

Nature, prevalence, and risk factors for self-neglect among older people: a pilot study from Vellore, South India.

Changes in demography in developing countries haves led to new issues among older rural populations, such as self-neglect which is under researched.Self-neglect identified as poor self-care, unsafe living quarters, inadequate medical care and poor utilization of services increase the odds of morbidity and mortality.Methods Our study was conducted in Kaniyambadi, a rural block in Vellore district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) as primary and secondary outcomes in total hip and knee arthroplasty randomized controlled trials: a systematic review.

Background: Significant heterogeneity exists regarding patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) used in total hip (THA) and knee (TKA) arthroplasty randomized controlled trials (RCTs). This study investigates the PROMs used as primary and secondary outcomes in contemporary arthroplasty RCTs.

Methods: A literature search identified THA and TKA RCTs that were published in top ten impact factor orthopaedic journals from 2017 to 2021.

Infantile Myofibromatosis of the Femoral Neck: A Case Report.

Case: A 15-month-old boy who was being followed for developmental dysplasia of the hip because of breech presentation was discovered to have a solitary infantile myofibroma in the left femoral neck. The patient was avoiding weight-bearing on the affected extremity; thus, stabilization of the femoral neck was performed using a proximal femur locking plate. Postoperatively, he achieved all gross motor developmental milestones.

Disparities in Demographics in Hip Arthroplasty Between U.S. Active Duty Military and the ACS-NSQIP Clinical Registry.

Introduction: Patient demographics, such as sex and age, are known risk factors for undergoing revision following primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). The military population is unique because of the increased rates of primary and secondary osteoarthritis of the hip. Treatment options are limited for returning patients to their line of duty; however, THA has been shown to be an effective option.

Improving Assessment and Learning Environments for Graduate Medical Trainees to Advance Healthcare Language Equity.

Language-appropriate care is critical for equitable, high-quality health care, but educational standards to assure graduate medical trainees are prepared to give such care are lacking. Detailed guidance for graduate medical education is provided by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education through the following: (1) an assessment framework for competencies, subcompetencies, and milestones for trainees and (2) the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Pathways for assessment of trainees' learning environments. These tools do not include a robust framework to evaluate trainees' abilities to offer language-appropriate care.

Quantum Simulation of Molecular Response Properties in the NISQ Era.

Accurate modeling of the response of molecular systems to an external electromagnetic field is challenging on classical computers, especially in the regime of strong electronic correlation. In this article, we develop a quantum linear response (qLR) theory to calculate molecular response properties on near-term quantum computers. Inspired by the recently developed variants of the quantum counterpart of equation of motion (qEOM) theory, the qLR formalism employs "killer condition" satisfying excitation operator manifolds that offer a number of theoretical advantages along with reduced quantum resource requirements.

This study aims to compare demographic data between active duty military personnel and a nationwide sample to identify differences that may impact clinical and economic outcomes.

Does a Preoperative Mental Health Diagnosis Affect Pain Management in Patients With Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Undergoing Surgery?

Background: Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) are typically treated surgically with posterior spinal fusion (PSF) when the curve continues to progress beyond 45 to 50 degrees. In adult patients, studies have shown that preoperative psychiatric diagnoses are associated with poorer clinical outcomes after lumbar spine surgery. This study aims to address whether a preoperative mental health disorder affects outcomes in pediatric patients with AIS treated with PSF.

Generalization of the Tensor Product Selected CI Method for Molecular Excited States.

In a recent paper [, 6098], we introduced a new approach for accurately approximating full CI ground states in large electronic active-spaces called Tensor Product Selected CI (TPSCI). In TPSCI, a large orbital active space is first partitioned into disjoint sets (clusters) for which the exact, local many-body eigenstates are obtained. Tensor products of these locally correlated many-body states are taken as the basis for the full, global Hilbert space.

One-year Outcomes after Discharge from Noncardiac Surgery and Association between Predischarge Complications and Death after Discharge: Analysis of the VISION Prospective Cohort Study.

Background: In previous analyses, myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery, major bleeding, and sepsis were independently associated with most deaths in the 30 days after noncardiac surgery, but most of these deaths occurred during the index hospitalization for surgery. The authors set out to describe outcomes after discharge from hospital up to 1 yr after inpatient noncardiac surgery and associations between predischarge complications and postdischarge death up to 1 yr after surgery.

Methods: This study was an analysis of patients discharged after inpatient noncardiac surgery in a large international prospective cohort study across 28 centers from 2007 to 2013 of patients aged 45 yr or older followed to 1 yr after surgery.

Recurrence and return to duty following patellar instability events in military personnel.

Introduction: Military service members experience patellar dislocations at a rate 10 times that of civilians. The purpose of this study was to determine the return to duty rate of active duty military personnel following first-time or recurrent patellar dislocation. Secondary goals were to identify patient variables and radiographic parameters associated with recurrent instability and requiring medical separation from military service.

Comparative evaluation of diabetic retinopathy screening programs in regular ophthalmology clinics versus integrated diabetic clinics within rural health-care services.

Background: Robust integration of diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening within health systems is essential to prevent DR-related blindness. This, however, remains a challenge in the developing world. The aim of this study was to evaluate two models of DR screening programs within rural general health-care services.

An observer-blinded, cluster randomised trial of a typhoid conjugate vaccine in an urban South Indian cohort.

Background: Typhoid fever causes nearly 110,000 deaths among 9.24 million cases globally and disproportionately affects developing countries. As a control measure in such regions, typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
