Objectives: To understand the vaginal bleeding/spotting experiences of postmenopausal (PM) women taking estrogen plus progestin therapies (EPT) and develop measures to assess these symptoms and their impact on women's daily lives in four countries.

Design: (1) Concept elicitation interviews were conducted with PM women in the US (n=14), Italy (n=15), Mexico (n=15) and China (n=15) to explore vaginal bleeding/spotting symptoms associated with EPT. The Post-Menopausal Bleeding Questionnaire (PMBQ) was also debriefed to evaluate understanding and comprehensiveness.

Genetic toxicology data have traditionally been employed for qualitative, rather than quantitative evaluations of hazard. As a continuation of our earlier report that analyzed ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) and methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) dose-response data (Gollapudi et al., 2013), here we present analyses of 1-ethyl-1-nitrosourea (ENU) and 1-methyl-1-nitrosourea (MNU) dose-response data and additional approaches for the determination of genetic toxicity point-of-departure (PoD) metrics.

Women with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH), atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), or atypical hyperplasia (AH) are at increased breast cancer (BC) risk. We investigated the accuracy and outcomes of mammography screening in women with histology-proven LCIS, ALH, ADH, or AH history who had screening through Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium-affiliated mammography facilities. Screens from two cohorts, defined by LCIS/ALH or ADH/AH history, were compared to two cohorts without such history mammogram-matched for age-group, breast density, family history, screen-year, and mammography registry.

Feline upper respiratory tract aspergillosis (URTA) occurs as two distinct anatomical forms, namely, sino-nasal aspergillosis (SNA) and sino-orbital aspergillosis (SOA). An emerging pathogen, Aspergillus felis, is frequently involved. The pathogenesis of URTA, in particular the relationship between the infecting isolate and outcome, is poorly understood.

An improved synthesis of the anti-inflammatory natural product antrocamphin A (2), involving a key Castro-Stephens reaction, is presented, along with the first total synthesis of its congener antrocamphin B (3). Approaches towards the more complex co-metabolite antrodioxolanone (4) were unsuccessful, but a samarium diiodide-mediated pinacol coupling of antrocamphin B did provide the chiral epimers (51). Antrocamphin A (2) inhibits Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF) reporter gene expression, but its development as an anti-inflammatory agent may be limited by cytotoxicity.

Objective: This study aims to confirm the factor structure of the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) questionnaire by using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and to determine whether improvements in menopause-specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL) observed with bazedoxifene (BZA)/conjugated estrogens (CE) relative to placebo are clinically meaningful.

Methods: Postmenopausal women with seven or more moderate to severe hot flushes per day (or ≥50 per wk) received BZA 20 mg/CE 0.45 mg, BZA 20 mg/CE 0.

Primary cutaneous lymphomas have different clinical behavior and prognosis than systemic lymphomas of similar histological subtype. About 30% of non-Hodgkin lymphomas involve extranodal tissues, the skin being the second most affected body organ after the gastrointestinal tract (approximately 18%). According to the EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer) classification, the lymphoma centrofollicular is indolent, since the lesions increase in size slowly over the years and spread to extracutaneous sites is uncommon.

Background: Bazedoxifene/conjugated estrogens (BZA/CE), a novel tissue-selective estrogen complex (TSEC), has been evaluated in the Selective estrogens, Menopause And Response to Therapy (SMART) trials. Secondary outcomes from these trials were evaluated to determine whether the effects of BZA/CE are influenced by years since menopause (YSM).

Methods: SMART-1 and SMART-2 were randomized, double-blind, placebo (PBO)-controlled phase 3 trials in nonhysterectomized postmenopausal women.

Among women with urinary iodine concentration <100 μg/l in the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), urinary perchlorate was associated with significant changes in thyroid stimulating hormone and total thyroxine (T4). Although perchlorate, nitrate, and thiocyanate all potentially act to inhibit iodide uptake, free T4 was not found to be associated with exposure to these chemicals in the same data. Fetuses of pregnant mothers with iodine deficiency are thought to be a sensitive subpopulation for perchlorate exposure, but the potential associations between free T4 and exposure to these chemicals among pregnant mothers in NHANES 2001-2002 and 2007-2008 have not been specifically evaluated to date.

Article Synopsis
  • A study explored the connection between autistic-like traits in the general population and clinical Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), suggesting they exist on a continuum.
  • A genome-wide association study (GWA) was conducted on 965 young adults from Western Australia, but no significant genetic associations were found.
  • However, two candidate genes, PRKCB1 and CBLN1, showed nominal associations, indicating they might be linked to autistic traits based on previous research.

Background: Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is a potentially blinding secondary glaucoma. It is caused by the formation of abnormal new blood vessels which prevent normal drainage of aqueous from the anterior segment of the eye. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents are specific inhibitors of the primary mediators of neovascularization.

There is now good evidence that non-coding sequence variants are involved in the heritability of many common complex traits. The current 'gold standard' approach for assessing functionality is the in vitro reporter gene assay to assess allelic differences in transcriptional activity, usually followed by electrophoretic mobility shift assays to assess allelic differences in transcription factor binding. Although widely used, these assays have inherent limitations, including the lack of endogenous chromatin context.

Marine biofilms are the preliminary entities due to attachment of bacteria on surfaces immersed in seawater and aggregated in a hydrated polymeric matrix. Such biofilms or microfouling play a major role in the succession of marine biofouling which attracts the larvae of barnacles, mussels and other sessile invertebrates. Different approaches have been used to prevent micro and macrofouling on marine industrial settings.

In the present study, we obtained and characterized partially a monoclonal antibody (4H11D10B11 mAb) against triosephosphate isomerase from Taenia solium (TTPI). This antibody recognized the enzyme by both ELISA and western blot and was able to inhibit its enzymatic activity in 74%. Moreover, the antigen-binding fragments (Fabs), products of digestion of the monoclonal antibody with papain, retained almost the same inhibitory effect.
