Designing Graphs to Communicate Risks: Understanding How the Choice of Graphical Format Influences Decision Making.

Previous research suggests that the choice of graphical format for communicating risk information affects both understanding of the risk magnitude and the likelihood of acting to decrease risk. However, the mechanisms through which these effects work are poorly understood. To explore these mechanisms using a real-world scenario, we examined the relative impact of two graphical displays for depicting the risk of exposure to unexploded ammunition during potential land redevelopment.

Risk Factors for Hearing Loss in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis.

Background: Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) are at increased risk for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) due, at least in part, to the ototoxic side effects of routine CF therapies. However, the prevalence of SNHL and additional factors contributing to the development of SNHL are unknown.

Purpose: To identify risk factors associated with the development of SNHL in a large cohort of CF patients who had been referred for audiometric testing.

iPractice: piloting the effectiveness of a tablet-based home practice program in aphasia treatment.

The current study investigated the effectiveness of a home practice program based on the iPad (Apple Inc., Cupertino, CA), implemented after 2 weeks of intensive language therapy, for maintaining and augmenting treatment gains in people with chronic poststroke aphasia. Five of eight original participants completed the 6-month home practice program in which they autonomously practiced retrieving words for objects and actions.

Frequent association of cochlear nerve canal stenosis with pediatric sensorineural hearing loss.

Objective: To examine the association between cochlear nerve canal (CNC) dimensions and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL).

Design: Retrospective review.

Setting: Tertiary pediatric hospital.

Histopathologic investigation of the dimensions of the cochlear nerve canal in normal temporal bones.

Objective: Establish normative histopathologic data on the dimensions of the cochlear nerve canal (CNC).

Background: Evidence suggests that when the CNC is stenotic, the cochlear nerve may be hypoplastic. There is clear agreement in the literature that an internal auditory canal less than 2 mm in diameter is a relative contraindication to cochlear implantation in children.
