Hand surgery services were required to rapidly adapt to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Two years following the initial wave, hand surgery units continue to adapt and recover from the pandemic. The aim of the RSTN COVID-19 Hand Recovery survey was to evaluate what adaptions made to hand surgery services during COVID-19 have been maintained in the COVID recovery phase.

Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the risk of SSI in hand trauma surgeries, analyzing 201 studies involving over 315,000 patients, with findings indicating a 10% infection risk in randomized trials and a 5% overall risk across all studies.
  • * These findings can inform clinical practices, such as aiding in informed consent discussions, fostering shared decision-making, and guiding future trials for antimicrobial treatments in hand trauma cases.

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly impacted the delivery of hand surgery services throughout the UK and Europe; from triage to treatment. Our aim was to assess the impact on management of common hand trauma injuries to inform future service delivery and research. The Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network led a service evaluation during the first wave of COVID-19 in 2020.

Background: The relative motion (RM) orthosis was introduced over 40 years ago for extensor tendon rehabilitation and more recently applied to flexor tendon repairs.

Purpose: We systematically reviewed the evidence for RM orthoses following surgical repair of finger extensor and flexor tendon injuries including indications for use, configuration and schedule of orthosis wear, and clinical outcomes.

Study Design: Systematic review.

Introduction: Head and neck anatomy is complex for students to learn and educators to teach. Instructing students on anatomy using radiological imaging can aid comprehension and prepare them for future clinical practice. Computer-aided anatomy instruction is accessible to diverse learners and avoids barriers identified with face-to-face teaching.

Background: Defining the optimal, evidence-based management of flexor tendon injury remains challenging. Lack of consensus on which measures to use to assess the outcome of interventions is a key issue, especially with regard to patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). This systematic review defines the landscape of outcome measurement in studies on interventions for flexor tendon injuries to guide future research.

Hand surgery services had to rapidly adapt to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The aim of the Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network #RSTNCOVID Hand Surgery survey was to document the changes made in the UK and Europe and consider which might persist. A survey developed by the Reconstructive Surgery Trials Network, in association with the British Association of Hand Therapists, was distributed to hand surgery units across the UK and Europe after the first wave of COVID-19.

The coronal incision is the mainstay for access in craniosynostosis surgery. Scarring is a common concern of parents whose children are offered an open procedure. To the author's knowledge, there are no previous studies looking at the psychosocial impact of scarring from coronal access incisions for craniosynostosis procedures.

Background: Dupuytren disease (DD) is a common fibroproliferative disease of the palmar fascia. The mainstay of DD treatment in England is surgery with either percutaneous needle fasciotomy, limited fasciectomy, or dermofasciectomy. This study aimed to investigate the temporal trends and geographical variation of primary DD surgery in England.

Objectives: Intra-articular steroid injection is commonly used to treat base of thumb osteoarthritis (BTOA), despite a lack of large-scale data on safety and effectiveness. We estimate the incidence of serious complications and further procedures following BTOA injection, including the risk of post-operative serious surgical site infection for subsequent operative intervention.

Methods: Hospital Episode Statistics data linked to mortality records from 1 April 1998 to 31 March 2017 were used to identify all BTOA injections undertaken in adults in the National Health Service secondary care in England.

There have been sporadic reports of the development of delayed disease recurrence after bone marrow transplantation for severe aplastic anemia despite sustained majority or full donor chimerism. This is termed "donor-type aplasia" (DTA). We describe the management and outcome of 11 pediatric patients from 8 institutions in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East who developed DTA at a mean of 35 months post-transplant.

This article reports the surgical management of a 3-month-old girl with Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, who presented with bicoronal synostosis and a large midline sinus pericranii with abnormal cerebral venous drainage via scalp veins. Raised intracranial pressure was demonstrated on monitoring, indicating the need for calvarial expansion necessitating a coronal access incision. A 2-staged delayed raising of the coronal flap was performed to reduce the potential risk of cerebral venous infarction.

Pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs) are increasingly tested for KIAA1549-BRAF fusions. We used reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for the 3 most common KIAA1549-BRAF fusions, together with BRAF V600E and histone H3.3 K27M analyses to identify relationships of these molecular characteristics with clinical features in a cohort of 32 PA patients.

INTRODUCTION. Rebiopsy rates as high as 12% have been reported in previous studies of Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (PCNSL). This can lead to secondary operations, increasing risks of morbidity to the patient and costs for the NHS.
