Psychological interventions for adolescents have shown mixed efficacy, and including parents in interventions may be an important avenue to improve treatment outcomes. Evidence from meta-analyses examining the role of parents in interventions for youth is inconsistent and has typically combined findings for both children and adolescents together. No prior meta-analysis has examined the specific role of parents in adolescent interventions as compared with interventions focused solely on adolescents across several disorders.

Stress and sleep problems are significantly correlated in adolescents. Few longitudinal studies, however, have evaluated possible correlates and predictors of sleep problems at multiple points across adolescence. The current study examined the relation between stress and sleep problems across four years in a sample of adolescents who varied in risk for psychopathology.

Maternal depression is associated with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems in offspring, but the substantial heterogeneity of depression precludes a full understanding of these associations. Variation in course of depression, characterized by severity or chronicity, may be related differentially to children's development. The current meta-analytic review examined the relations of these characteristics of maternal depression to children's developmental outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Adolescent military-dependents are at risk for weight gain and mental health issues due to their unique psychosocial challenges, yet there are few effective preventative interventions for them.
  • The study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of collecting BMI data over two years following a pilot trial of an adapted interpersonal psychotherapy program designed to address these concerns.
  • Twenty-seven girls participated in the study, with outcomes measured through follow-up assessments, treatment acceptability questionnaires, and statistical tests to analyze data collection rates and treatment effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • Adolescent military dependents may face greater psychosocial stressors and a higher risk for disordered eating compared to civilian adolescents, potentially due to the unique stressors from their parents' military careers.
  • The study investigates whether negative emotions, particularly depressive symptoms, mediate the connection between social functioning problems (like loneliness and relationship issues) and emotional eating among these youths.
  • Findings suggest that depressive symptoms significantly mediate this relationship, indicating that understanding interpersonal dynamics could help address weight gain and eating disorders in this population; further research is needed for conclusive insight.
