Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD), one of the commonest severe monogenic disorders, is caused by the inheritance of two abnormal haemoglobin (beta-globin) genes. SCD can cause severe pain, significant end-organ damage, pulmonary complications, and premature death. Kidney disease is a frequent and potentially severe complication in people with SCD.

Background And Purpose: Pharmacists, regardless of practice setting, will be called to provide education to patients, healthcare professionals, students, and the community. In an effort to increase students' exposure to the knowledge, skills, and responsibilities of a pharmacist in academia, an introductory healthcare academia elective was created. The purpose of this article is to describe the implementation and assessment of this elective course.

Methods: Pediatric clinics screening for food insecurity (n = 27) invited families experiencing food insecurity to participate in a direct referral to a local organization that assists with SNAP applications. A food stamp specialist telephoned participants to determine SNAP eligibility, assist with the application, and/or provide other supports.
Mammalian females pay high energetic costs for reproduction, the greatest of which is imposed by lactation. The synthesis of milk requires, in part, the mobilization of bodily reserves to nourish developing young. Numerous hypotheses have been advanced to predict how mothers will differentially invest in sons and daughters, however few studies have addressed sex-biased milk synthesis.
