Biochar amendment is a promising strategy for mitigating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil and plants, but its effects on ARGs at field scale are not fully understood. Here, field trials were executed utilizing two plant varieties, Brassica juncea and Lolium multiflorum, with four types of biochar to investigate changes in ARGs and microbiome in soil, rhizosphere, root endophytes, and leaf endophytes. Results showed that biochar altered ARG distribution in soil and plant, and restrained their transmission from soil and rhizosphere to endophytes.

Soil nitrogen (N) transformation processes, encompassing denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled with iron reduction (Feammox), constitute the primary mechanisms of soil dinitrogen (N) loss. Despite the significance of these processes, there is a notable gap in research regarding the assessment of managed fertilization and irrigation impacts on anaerobic N transformations in paddy soil, crucial for achieving sustainable soil fertility management. This study addressed the gap by investigating the contributions of soil denitrification, anammox, and Feammox to N loss in paddy soil across varying soil depths, employing different fertilization and irrigation practices by utilizing N stable isotope technique for comprehensive insights.

Aerobic methanotrophs in paddies serve as methane (CH) filters and thereby reduce CH emissions. Amending soil with waste products can mitigate CH emissions in crops, but little is known about the impacts of amendments with steel slag and biochar on the populations and activities of aerobic methanotrophs in rice cropland. We used real-time quantitative PCR detecting system and high-throughput sequencing to determine the effects of slag and biochar amendments on CH emission, abundance, and community structure of methanotrophs, and the relationships between soil properties and the abundance and community composition of methanotrophs during the rice growing season in both early and late paddies.
